This Is How Flight Training Should Be | Steep Turns Aren't Easy!

It's quite simple really... Flight training is about the student. They come in all sorts of different packages but the fact remains that it's the CFI's job to get the best out of the student. That means that the instructor should be dynamic with their teaching styles to match with the student they are flying with. I have heard too many stories in my career of CFI's treating student training like a money making exercise and I am fully against it. In this video I show you how CFI's should be conducting themselves. Making flying/training fun while at the same time holding high standards is a great way to create pilots.
Enjoy the flight

My DPE basically gave me another shot at my left steep turn. I lost around 110-120 ft. She had me do my one to the right and I didn't lose anything. She had me do my left again and I fixed it and maybe got +/- 10ft which she gave a pass. Just remember, not every DPE is out to fail you, especially for your PPL

Steep turns are one of those maneuvers where if you’re just barely outside of standards and correct it, you probably won’t hear anything of it from most DPEs

if you identify the problem they will let you try again, if you ask for it. if you dont try to redo and think it was acceptable, they wont pass you. they are looking for control, if you are oblivious, you are not going to survive for long as a pilot.

@@av8or971 that depends on the DPE. One of mine said "I didn't see a reason to fail so, so I guess you pass"

It’s always a treat to fly with fellow flyers. To have a great instructor like Lew is hard to come by. He’s a natural instructor and has great interpersonal skills which makes his instructing both positive and developmental. It’s truly impressive what you do with a consistency that not a lot of CFII’s have. Keep up the great work my friend.

These videos show what a great instructor you are. I think you would make an awesome DPE. You had mentioned, along time ago, in a video possibly pursuing this path. I hope you do. We need more DPE's and more awesome DPE's and you would be a good one. I am sure there is a lot involved with becoming an FAA DPE though.

Thank you so much, sir. You’ve been around these parts for a long time and it’s been fantastic to have your support. I am interested in becoming a DPE. I’m not sure I have the experience they are looking for. I have the requirements but it’s up to them whether they want to bring me onboard. But thanks again man!

agree with the value of flying with a different CFI, and 👏👏 a diversity of flying style isn't bad! it was cool to see you two on a 'blind date'. how much time did you spend discussing before the flight?

Steep turns were the first time I felt one with the plane, in a way I had never felt before. My instructor noticed and told me "whatever you had for breakfast today, eat more!" On my checkride I delivered the numbers on my steep turns, but the examiner felt I was working too hard at it. "There's an easier way. Here's how..."

I thought private high airwork maneuvers were kinda difficult, but turns out they are only difficult in a feather light C150. Anything even a little heavier than that, like this Piper, makes it 10 times easier.

Hello Lewis, new to the channel and really enjoy the content. Question, love aviation and everything about it, and want to get licensed, but…. have an issue with motion sickness. Is that something that can be overcome or do I have to scrub my ambitions? Thank you, Anthony
@flysport_tedder
@flysport_tedder 10 ай бұрын
it seems like there's a chunk of people, maybe 15-20%, who get motion sick. it seems like most sort of settle down after a couple of flights. have you been in a plane and been motion sick? if you're controlling the plane and can look at the ground you might do better. Go look at the recent video from FlightChops to get an example of a passenger with nausea for a lot of reasons, vid title is "Debriefing Formation Flight that didn’t go well…".

@davm6505 10 ай бұрын
For me it took more than a couple of flights, but over a few weeks of regular flight training, I went from constantly worrying about feeling sick to being able to do steep turns and handle rough air without the slightest concern. I have a feeling that for most people it's a matter of getting used to being in the air. I also think that being nervous and worried about it can actually bring it on - another reason why it seems to get better over time as you get comfortable in the cockpit.

Got my steep turns figured out, do flying eyes help at all with short field landings though?

They are clinically proven to help with short field landings. They are very light which translates into a shorter landing distance, somehow. The technology is mental!
