This is The Making Of A Pilot brought to you by LewDix Aviation. In this series you will accompany Jonathan on his journey to becoming a Private Pilot. In episode 2 Jonathan learns how to control the aircraft in slow flight and avoid spins while he stalls it. Any flight instructor will tell you that rudder control is of great importance when stalling and I demonstrate why that is in the latter stages of the video.
Enjoy the flight and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any episodes of The Making Of A Pilot!

Lew, great video as usual, I was pleased to hear you say "don't let the airplane fly you, you fly the plane". Back in the late 80's when I was just starting to learn to fly I was fortunate enough to get some flight time with a retired B-17 pilot. He used to tell me those exact words, which have served me well in my aviation endeavors.

Thanks man. I think it's important to let students know that they are in control. It helps to know that and being given the chance to correct mistakes instead of the instructor constantly stepping in is big too.

I am thoroughly impressed - 100% - Johnathan is a natural .... and doing so well at this point of his training. Lewis, .... thanks for coming back to this and leaving your Commercial job. These videos are so good - so riveting. Makes me feel like I am right there flying with you guys. Your instruction is impeccable brother. Please tell Johnathan I said - Keep up the good work - both of you !!!!

Spot on Lewis about the law of primacy! As a CFI myself I think very carefully that I teach the procedure correctly the very first time.

Only halfway through the video and had to take a moment to comment: Thank you for talking about Primacy while doing the power off stall. This was a terrific demonstration and as a CFI in training, great for me to see how this works in the cockpit instead of a textbook.

True story on stalls, my instructor and I did them early in my journey to understand what they are and then later when I was more capable of control; it was still unnerving, I argued "Are you sure we should be doing this?!" I'd still like to complete spin training for that added desensitization.

I think I had forgotten how much I loved these original-style instructing videos! As always KZbin doesn't alert me. It suggested a video about a lawyer who picks locks, but heavwn forbid it tell me about my favorite KZbin topic from one of my favorite channels 🙄

If only that shirt had the piper on it but saying the wings were in the correct position!! :) I love these long videos I can just sit back and relax on while I have to watch my baby all day long. My plane SHOULD be done this week, new cylinder overhaul and it needed Magneto harness replaced as they were bad too come to find out causing drops in power. Keep these long videos up and pick up my plane from Winter Haven when you get time, at least it's low wing hehe.

Yeah, I was quite anxious about stalls just a few lessons ago (I am only three in, so not like I am far removed from that time lol) but my instructor showed me a power off stall and it was mostly a non-event in the Warrior II we fly. That was all it took for me to get over the anxiety.

Loving this new series! Just passed my CFI initial and I'm starting to get into the flight instructing game. What do you have your students do for ground school Lew? I've been teaching ground as an AGI at a part 141 school for the past little bit but I'll be flight instructing on the 61 side of things so that'll be something I'll have to navigate soon. Also, thanks for providing a great example of what to do as a CFI by keeping it fun for the students!

I think the FlyingEyes gang needs to hook you up with a Grumman to do your videos in. Imagine doing all this in a proper airplane without those sloppy controls at low speeds!! Florida in a slide back canopy = game changer.

Would you consider (on a different flight where you set up and brief it, obviously) taking a student like Jonathan to do spin training? I know the standard is to wait for CFI training, but it's helpful for everyone to experience, even just to have more context with things like stalls
@LewDixAviation

Lew - at the 30 minute area, your students power on stall... I noticed the stall horn came back after pushing it over... I have the same problem.... Tips to avoid?
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation 10 ай бұрын
That’s the importance of reducing angle of attack. Get that airflow back before raising the nose again because you risk a secondary stall. Until that airflow comes back, you tend to get the stall warning.
