In this video, I show you what works for me in regards to completing slow flight, stalls, unusual attitudes, steep turns and a steep spiral emergency descent to landing. I'm so lucky to have an instructor that took the time to teach me these things properly. Loved the emergency decent to land, it's one of my favorite maneuvers and really fun if it's a grass field. Can't wait to see the impossible turn... (I've done that 3 times now) GREAT video Lewis. Show these instructors how it's done! So many schools won't teach the "hard" stuff. That "hard" stuff might save someone's life!

Great vid as always Lew. Also an FI, but in Europe and barely a year of teaching experience, here's a few things we do differently: Accelerated stalls, while not a requirement for PPL, i do like to demonstrate these, though for the recovery I'd emphasise lowering the nose first (unload the wings) before adding power or leveling the wings. So I'd go nose down, wings level, then add power, to show that as soon as I unload, stall warning stops because you lower the AoA. For the unusual attitudes nose high, I think this was recently changed because of all the emphasis on Advanced UPRT. They focus now on changing the nose high upset to a nose low first and power actually goes idle. In a SEP it barely makes s difference, but I think the point is to prepare people for jets, because if you go full power in a jet when nose high, with the engines under the wings, it will actually pull your nose higher and make it harder to get the nose down. Anyway, the nose high isn't even a PPL requirement here, so it's more CPL stuff. For steep turns, we don't use trim since they're considered a transient manoeuvre. Funnily enough I still see the mistake that students tend to leave the back pressure in during the rollout, and end up climbing after the steep turn, even when the trim was left as it was for straight and level.

Passed my checkride 2 weeks ago. The DPE had me do a power off turning stall. I had done power on turning stalls but never power off. It wasn't tough to do but caught me off guard. He also wanted a emergency decent put straight down. No turning.

At least you did not have to remain on the same heading. You can not bust the heading after recovering from the stall. Like P+/- 100 Feet. It is easier to stall in a turn as you are not judged on holding the heading.

Nice job! One item that would be good to see on a power out spiral is wanting to stay a little high and then having to slip to lose altitude to land. One thing I got to learn from getting tailwheel endorsement. That would be another cool video, something in a tailwheel.

trimming in steep turns is something my instructor taught me in the 172 after about 22 hrs in the DA40. it made them incredibly easy. Im gearing up for my stage 1 check now and solo. so im trying to gather as much input as possible for it. I got to say my man, id love to have you as an instructor.

9:00 if you are preparing for your PPL, don't forget to establish Vy/Vx on recovery. It's not an arbitrary climb (check your ACS)

there arnt many new maneuvers encountered during a instrument ride, perhaps a few stalls etc with a hood on, other than that its just a hold or two and usually 3 approaches.

There seem to be 2 camps with trim and steep turns. My instructor insisted no trim because it’s a quick maneuver, and he wanted me to get a better feel for the airplane. I did that all the way through to my checkride. Then there is your way with trim. I’ve tried it both ways, and my DPE put quite a pause between left and right which would have had me fight the trim to get back straight and level. On a power off stall, you only need to take the power out and hold the plane level and you’ll stall. This is more probable getting distracted on downwind. Just my two pence. I have enjoyed your videos very much!

Baby stalls. I was in a fuel injected 180HP Decathlon and I would pull up to stall the airplane and then kicked full left rudder to get the wing to drop and enter a spin. Fun Fun Fun. Your site picture is like brown the ground. Then you recover by power idle, Neutral Aileron, opposite rudder, stick forward a bit Then recover by pulling up but not to aggressively. Then you look at the G meter to see how many G's you pulled. This airplane has more capability than my body. I am going for my private pilot and I have spin training included. We first started out with, slips, skids, Knowing where the Relative wind is, then stalls and having the plane weather-vein in the the relative wind. Then we got to the fun part of the spins. All this to help make me a safer pilot. A couple not the sharpest pilots in the shed when not aligned with the runway, will bank the plane to 45 degrees or a high bank, at that slower speed, use to much rudder for the rate of turn ( uncoordinated) and pull up as the bank takes away some of the lift. This spills stall / spin. Not good when that close to the ground on approach.

The only thing that i would have done differently is the accelerated stall. I would have unloaded the aircraft, given full power and then wings level. Like you said, it is all about the angle of attack. Therefore, I would always unload the aircraft first. nice video though as usual!

One of my instructors was gentle with his unusual attitudes setup. His thinking was it had the advantages of both easily confusing the student and also making it less likely to make them sick. I tended to agree with him after having another instructor who did the yank and Bank setup.

I wish the trim and flaps were easier in a PA28 - i keep unbuckling my CFI 👀 - im in UK and also those bloody US switches - are they off / on / off - also now that the ink has worn off they could be anything. Same problem in the 90s with the IBM PS/2 with their bright orange on off switch. I was always switching off peoples machines when wanting to turn it on. Thanks fully the fuel switch is well signed.

Steep turns used to mess with me. My natural, human tendency is to alleviate g-force. It’s just how my body reacts to that scenario. So I used to descend and descend…one instructor actually got a little annoyed with me about ten years ago. I think the turning point, as it were, was learning what level of g-force felt CORRECT for a 45 degree bank. Am I feeling 1.4 Gs? That’s what’s *supposed* to be happening here, bozo. That has to be dug into your neurons in order for it to become your new natural tendency. Everyone has their little natural weakness…I’ve never had much issue with stalls, pattern work or radios…but those damn steep turns. That was my Achilles tendon early on in flight training.

Great video. I disagree with keeping full flaps when recovering from a stall or slow flight. I immediately add power and drop flaps to 10 degrees. Anything past that is a majority of drag with little lift.

Thanks man! Don’t mistake me showing why you don’t drop all flaps at one time as me saying you recover with full flaps. I took 10 degrees out then wanted to show the major lift reduction if you drop the rest too quickly.
