Wow Lewis really got a good setup by getting the reduced cost desert flags and the easy yield tech on Deserts if he settled a city, but he wasted all his food on expanding into the sea first. Wrong order on all of it

Lewis isn't far off with the 'need support because everyone else is trying to kill you' thing, but mainly in autocratic systems of power. Democracies function sort of along those lines, but differently (duh, I know). If you want to read one theory about power structures, try 'The Dictators Handbook' or 'The Logic of Political Survival' by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita.

To talk on what daltos said. Rivers are amazing and so are the flowery fields. Forests are actually pretty mid. Much like oceans. But they're the most common tile. In maps that have mostly forests or oceans you'll wanna spec into them. But a map with 70% desert is going to give the most specing into it. To be specific. You want to make the most out of every tile you get in a war. So if you're speced for rivers. Fighting into deserts and your opponent has all desert tech. You might be hurting them. But you're gaining nothing.

Oh my god and they made it cheaper to place flags but more expensive to get yield techs. They're literally trolling with expansionist Kush. "Here you have 1 ring of non-desert tiles around you, also it's the only tile inbetween you and your 2 neighbors so they're going to be taking most of that. Have fun being expnasionist in the desert."
