The factual events were 1 mclaren and 1 ferrari engineer stealing data from both teams to wager with a 3rd team which was never revealed. There was very little impact on the performance of the McLarens and the engineers involved were banned, this did not reach far into the mclaren set up hence why Ron Dennis wasnt banned (unlike say Briatorie who was for his role in crash gate). For added context, Hamilton was locked in a tight championship battle with Vettel, I believe they were tied on points entering this round of the championship. The fact that he gave back the position to Valteri showed everything there was to show about how Mercedes allowed both their drivers to be on equal footing while both had a realistic shot at the championship.
