A 70-minute edit of the 6-part documentary series On The City presented by Lewis Mumford. Based on Mumford's 1961 book The City in History, the documentary charts the development of Western urban civilization through the different phases of history: from the first cities of Mesopotamia to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and on into the global age of industrialization and suburbanization. The documentary examines the precarious foundations of a civilization built upon the mass burning of fossil fuels and blind reliance on one-sided over-powerful technology.
Mumford argues for a world where technology, rather than dominating the environment, achieves a balance with nature. His ideal vision of an organic city is where human culture thrives alongside technological innovation rather than being subordinated to it. Mumford's insights contrast the idea of a human-focused technological city based on real human needs with those constructed around war, consumerism, and an obscenely wealthy elite.
Lewis Mumford notes that his 'method demands personal experience and observation,' thus he confines himself to the cities and regions of the Western world. His florid writing style has been described as organic compared to the cold, mechanical style of many other history writers. Stylistically, Mumford’s works are full of metaphors and similes, as well as quotations from famous novelists, giving his prose shades of poetry. He refers to such texts as Great Expectations and Hard Times, sometimes using citations to illustrate to the reader what life was like during the industrial era and the city in which Dickens lived. Mumford's great masterpiece The Pentagon of Power continues to exert a powerful influence.
