Hi Capt,... This video is very helpful! I have a video of me replacing a part I broke on the starboard side of the windlass, but I didn't take the port side cover off... I will now check mine, and do as you have shown here... Thank you! I put the boat in the water yesterday (had it our for the hurricane).. I had a lot of help from friends...

Nice job! I don't know why Lewmar does not go head and put the extra silicone seal on the outside like you did.... That makes it so much better! Thanks for sharing!
@OutOnTheReef4 жыл бұрын
Good question! i agree the seal they install is not the best
@johnm57144 жыл бұрын
Lewmar could’ve designed that thing so it had a SS Overhang covering that joint-that would’ve been better.you of course went the extra step sealing it so you should be good for many years.nicely done!

Both these Lewmar windlass service videos are excellent, Cap'n. For some reason, it seems windlasses are expected to live on the bow and take the abuse of salt water with every passage, yet rarely receive care. Probably because they look somewhat indestructible. Excellent topic. Would be good to know if adding sealant made a difference.
@OutOnTheReef2 жыл бұрын
Thank you captain and yes the seal made a huge difference because it has not come off and no water is going in it so I recommend everybody to do this to their witness to help sort water out thanks for watching capitan
@jacktyler759910 ай бұрын
Follow-up comment: An owner of these 500-700 series windlasses can apply a UV-resistant tape over the seal and surrounding the windlass. This is easier and probably longer lasting than silicone sealant and adds to the seal's waterproofing.
@OutOnTheReef10 ай бұрын
Yes cap. That's a better option than it will Really help And yes, anything to keep the water away. We'll make the windlass last longer.

How do you like this windless? Any issues with the rode clogging in the locker? I’ve wondered why the didn’t mount it back another few inches to assist with centering the drop in the locker as it looks like you could? How many feet of chain are you using prior to the rode starting? This is going to be my next add and I figured I’d go with the same as it’s what I see most and the stock new option. Curious where the wire run is and the breaker? Lots of questions, sorry lol. Thanks for the vid.
@OutOnTheReef4 жыл бұрын
Yes you are 100% right if they would position a little bit back The Windlass it will work better on accumulating that rope on the anchor Locker so occasionally if I have to retrieve 200 to 300 for the Rope I have to go to the Anchor locker and adjust the Rope which it's terrible so yes I do have a problem with that but in the future I'm going to try to engineer something that will help me with that in the inside of the anchor Locker I just haven't had time to get to it

I like the llumar Windlass but I think I'm going with the drum Style my last boat I had stinky rope in my bilge the drum style prevents that all of its on deck no more stinky rope in the bilge and nasty chain chain particles that could stop up your bilge pumps

Hey Cap, where did you purchase this seal kit for the Windlass?
@Grady2523 жыл бұрын
Sorry, cap, got distracted and you got yours from Lewmar. My first Windlass destroyed due to rust and failed seal, so on my second one. Very paranoid with water coming in so this time, I opened up completely and greased very heavily with Lucas Marine Grease. Once put back together, I found some chrome tape just wide enough to cover the seal and stick to the surface edges which helps keep the sun damage and water off the seal. Hopefully, this will work as save my windlass. I think I found a source for the seal from MauiPro online, seems to be the only place I can find them.
