Lex Lacks Genuine Parental Affection -- (Smallville - S1; E8)

This was one of the most iconic and important scenes in the entire show in my mind, showcasing how close Lex is to Clark and how many worlds apart, having everything and yet absolutely no genuine affection ever since he lost his mother. I cant get over how vulnerable Michael played him in this scene, especially the look in his eyes when he says "you almost got me killed" and his father doesnt even ink just says "you almost got yourself killed: it was your call", and he has to realize that his father had no genuine concern for him. In the background of the next shot you can see him pulling himself together and then he's right back to playing mental chess with his father as always. It's so incredibly potent especially paited with the shot a moment later where their fake brace is contrasted with the Kents genuine one.

My parents assumed the look Lex was giving Clark was more his suspicions Clark was more then he appeared again, but my first guess was always that Lex envied what Clark had, which he mentioned numerous times throughout the show. You can't help but feel for the guy for most of the first half of the series.

Yes his dad is giving him a hug for the pictures. Clarks parents are embracing him and showing how proud they are of him. How could Lex not be green with envy.

Just goes to show how people miss that Lex was envious of Clark. They were friends I believe,but friends can become jealous of things you have that they don't. As seasons progressed Lex practically tried to become Clark in a stalkerish type of way. If you watch closely you can see how creepy it all is. Now imagine what that jealousy would have becomeonce Lionel started singing Clarks praises. Clark did right not telling Lex his secret.

@@gamblertoguru382 true because it's weird that a grown man would constantly visit a teen farm boy, which saved him from drowning. I think he was grateful that Clark rescued him,but in time got tired of Clark Kent mystery.

I still remember watching this 20 years ago while having (I think) Chinese food for dinner with my folks on a Saturday evening. I told my dad about this show and he seemed interested in it because he liked Superman. As soon as Earl popped up on screen, my dad said "Holy shit! Thats Tony Todd". He was a fan of his work. As soon as this scene ended, and the credits popped up, my dad said he thought this was a rather good show. Its scenes like this that make me think back to a time when my family and I would sit down while eating take out and watch a good movie or TV show on a Saturday evening. Mind you at the time we watched it, the world was still in a bit of chaos because 9/11 had happened a couple of weeks before. I just wish I could have seen the entire series, and that my dad could still be here and hear what his opinion would have been on the rest of the series.
