Look, there was always a bit of a darkness in Lex, so honestly it really could have gone either way, but I think that Smallville's version of Lex might not have turned evil if it wasn't for how other people treated him. If Jonathan Kent could have seen past Lionel and treated Lex as his own person and not as his father, maybe Lex wouldn't have turned evil. If Jonathan and Martha hadn't scared Clark into fearing ever telling anyone his secret, maybe he would have eventually told Lex and things would have been okay between them. It's also true that it's possible Lex would have wanted to exploit Clark's powers one day, even Pete wanted that, but I think he would have been less inclined to become Superman's greatest enemy. In the comics, Lex turning evil is often portrayed as though it was in his nature to do so. On Smallville, it was a tragedy from how he was nutured and treated.

Personally I think if Clark had told Lex his secret..it would have been fine at first. He would have protected his secret however as time grew on they would have started to butt heads about how problems should be solved. Lex was just too dark for Clark.. we see this even as early in S1 with how he did the meteor rock experiments. Lex would have wanted Clark's blood to do all sorts of things (I mean look at the Clone army!) He would have tried to manipulate Clark into doing things. I think them becoming enemies was inevitable...Now if everyone had believed in Lex and he didn't have Lionel playing constant mind games and abusing him he may have turned out fine.
@EX7Sonic3 жыл бұрын
I think Smallville still portrayed him going bad as his nature but they were just more subtle about it. Ultimately, Jonathan was right about Lex. His nature would've eventually made him start using Clark for his own gain. Don't forget that we see a lot of Lex's past before meeting Clark and he did some pretty shady stuff then. Really the majority of the reason he started going good was because of his interactions with Clark but Lex was too obsessed with finding the truth and too self-involved. Even in the early seasons, Lex still did a lot of questionable stuff and only kind of stopped when Clark or someone close was put in danger.

Hmm. Smallville did a very good job of making Lex Luthor a sympathetic character. We do see hints of the darkness in him very early on, but he's not a villain yet. It does appear like Jonathan's refusal to trust him would contribute to his bitterness and cynicism. Then again, Lex has always felt entitled to the things he have. He's generous with his money, that's easy to him, he has what seems to be nearly unlimited funds. It's how he ingratiates himself to others. To me, a subtle but telling sign that Lex isn't a good guy is how he is constantly shown speeding. Even after his accident where he could have killed Clark (if Clark wasn't invulnerable) and himself (if Clark hadn't been there to save him. He still speeds after that, because he doesn't believe the consequences would hurt him. He can always pay a speeding ticket. We cannot know if Lex would have kept Clark's secret if Clark had told him, but that's the wrong way to look at this. Lex was never entitled to know Clark's secret. A true friend would have backed off when they were asked to back off. Yes, Jonathan was stubborn and often treated Lex unfairly, but I don't think it's fair to credit him with Lex's face heel turn. Lionel's abusive parenting and Lex's own choices and sense of entitlement are much better culprits.

On smallvile lex turning evil was really a tragedy. Even tho he already had a darkness in him in first season, he wanted to fight it. He really tried to be good but sadly it wasn't in his nature after Lionel's abusive parenting, judgements from literally everyone and of course his own choices. Smallvile makes great job that he can be good person but was there any chances for him to be one?

An important thing to note is that Lex sees the Kent family as an example of everything he's missing in his life. A loving and compassionate mother, a caring and protective father, and an innocent and inexperienced younger brother that can use a little guidance from Lex. And the main problem with that is Jonathan Kent himself. This version of him is flawed. He's got too much pride in him, a lot of anger, and he believes in using secrets to keep his family bonded together, even at the risk of shutting the rest of the world out. And Clark is unfortunately destined to become like his father. So is Lex. Lex will never get what he wants. He will end up alone largely because of Jonathan. So, if he can't get that loving family by being a good man, he will need to take it by force. Through cunning, deceit, and hostility. Using every tool Lionel taught him. And the tragic part is that Lex had amazing potential. Early seasons showed him agonizing and spending every waking moment trying to make the right decisions, ones that benefited everyone rather than the select few. Even if it meant defying his father on live television, he was willing to make the right choice. But there was one person who refused to believe it, and that constant heartbreak eventually stuck. The one person who could have cultivated that part of him and helped it flourish denied that it was even there. Where Clark is destined to become a better version of his father, one who learns to put his anger aside, let go of secrets, and swallow his pride, Lex was condemned to become the worst possible version of his. He will indeed become the most powerful and affluent man on the planet, but there will be so many corpses left in his wake. Smallville's Jonathan Kent created both Superman and Lex Luthor

Lex didn't deserve that treatment Jonathan Kent gave him. He basically took out his frustration he had for Lionel on Lex. Eventually this poison spread to Clark and sadly Clark started treating Lex like a criminal. Lex made some mistakes he was nowhere near like his father. After everyone betrayed him he had nowhere to go but to the darkness. Lex was a great friend but he was not someone you want to get on his bad side
@anthonymarquez46179 ай бұрын
Regardless, Lex's ego led to him being obsessed with power & control. Jonathan saw that he would eventually pose a threat by attempting to exploit Clark for his personal gain, had he discovered his secret through their friendship. Just like the legend of Naman & Sageeth revealed, they were predestined enemies.

As much as I liked Jonathan in Smallville, I always hated that he was the most responsible for Lex going bad. Lex was good despite living as Lionel's son, but he tried to become part of the Kent family and was rejected many times by only Jonathan. When Jonathan did accept him, he was quick to retract that goodwill and try to end the relationship soon afterward. A lot of the secrecy also came from Jonathan trying to protect Clark from his own past dealings with Lionel that had nothing to do with Lex.
@AriThecraftydragon2 жыл бұрын
I agree. That's one problem with having multiple writers. Goodwill but then retraction following episodes. Lex also went back on things though. He could've been happy with Lana, with kids and a job and the respect of the Kents only to not be able to save those he cares about without money so doubled down. The writers often seemed to open up possibilities and then retract them the next episode. It was odd. Like Clark in Lex's mind, seeing the good kid, saying that now he knows Lex was there, he'll find him, only to have Clark next episode act like he never found that good Lex and act like an ass to Lex. (Still liked the series.)

Lex is responsible for his actions. Causing something and being responsible are not the same things. Lex was responsible for not harming people and did not have to choose violence or hatred. Many people are rejected and disliked but do not turn cruel.
@carnthecorby2 жыл бұрын
After the episode with Lex splitting in two it explained a lot of about his "hidden darkness I can't always control." I do agree Clark should've told Lex sometime between Season 1-3 as that may have turned Lex out better. Plus, Clark kept lying to Lex and made it worse over time. Friendships aren't built on lies or distrust and can't be held together forever regardless if two polar opposites are like brothers.

Agree. Lex always looked up to Johnathan and wanted him to believe in him. I think if Johnathan and martha gave him some guidance instead of judgements, lex would've learn how to be a good person eventually. Tho Kent's doesn't own lex's anything, they're not his parents or else. Moreover lex indeed drove over clark, so they should have been mad at him.

I want to believe that lex would have been Clark's best friend if only he found out about the secret early or at least wasn't treated so bad by Johnathan (who prefers to believe in good in people expect luthers of course) and clark was more open with him like he was about car accident in first season. Lex put investigation on hold back then. But later on clark openly said that lex was making stuff up and was close to be crazy. But again it wasn't lex's secret to know. Lex should have respected Clark's choice not to tell him, if only clark didn't deny the secret at the first place.

If only if it was that simple for writers plan for lex to be friends with Clark for real from no more obsessing from bridge accident investigatiing and that lex wouldn’t double cross his best friend out of corrupted darkness is too strong👿 just sad though😞💔

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I was never that fond of Jonathan Kent in Smallville. As good as it is to have a strong moral compass, he saw things as a little too black-and-white for me. He made snap judgements about things, especially Lex, without really taking the individual circumstances of each situation into account.

It would have been great to see them develop the friendship into an xavier/magnus way where they start off as great friends but due to their views on life/values would deviate and become rivals. It doesn't mean Lex has to be evil as he is in the comics, but if he became a netural character, that would be enough to put him at odds with Clark every now and than. Perhaps like magnus/xavier, show moments where they're friendly and even help each other/talk. The way smallville ended unfortunately did away with any kind of possibility of this.

I wonder what would have happened if Clark just shrugged his shoulders, smiled and said "Lex, I'm an alien.. I was sent here as a baby when my world blew up. I have certain powers" Was Lex always going to attempt to control and ultimately destroy Kal-El or would that have been a life changing moment. The problem is no one will write it that way - I mean try to follow those strands of the story to their logical end because Lex Luther MUST become the sworn enemy of Superman. He must be an adversary. It's the story. There are certain landmarks that must be respected if a story is going to be about Superman. -Krypton must always explode. His parents must always die, he must always arrive on earth as a baby, he must be raised by Martha and Johnathan Kent. Lex Luther must be his worse human enemy. Details might change, but there are beats to the story, that can't... but I keep wondering .. could Lex in this version of the myth have stayed a friend or would it have been inevitable, even more certain that he would have become Superman's enemy?
