He took a guy with no significant grappling background and had him give issues to a lifelong grappler in those exchanges and this is all despite coming from a weight class lower. You can hate but that’s impressive. If he gets more time with guys or starts helping them earlier in their careers he can make some legit killers. Some of the techniques and philosophies volk used to get back up are going to help future guys counter the dagestani style grapplers and eventually help crack the code.

I’m definitely more of a volkanovski fan than Islam. Volk is just so entertaining. That being said, I felt Islam fought his worse fight he could against volk and still won. Islam looked like shit walking to that cage and still won, he definitely had a bad weight cut and needs to go to 170. I hate to say it but I feel Islam submits him in a rematch if he doesn’t have as short of a time between weigh ins and the fight.

I love Volk as a fighter, he's a beast, but come on. I've watched the fight at least a dozen times. Half of them I saw it with the sound off. Hell of a match. A few things that Volk supporters fail to realize or choose to ignore: Islam dropped Volk twice, once in round 1 and once in round 2. It was clear as day. One of the hits that dropped volk was not even a flush punch, it was actually the inner part of Islam's wrist from swinging. It shows the power of Islam. Volk tells his corner he's lost the first 2 rounds, he said it and in my opinion those were clear. So by that logic Islam would have only had to win 1 more round to win the fight, which he clearly won round 4, with that beautifully timed takedown. The rules say "effective striking and effective grappling". Now for Round 3, in my honest opinion I still cannot decide on that round, it was close. I mostly give volk the edge for the round. One other thing which was a little annoying, was how much volk was giving islam props for each time he connected with a solid hit which volk felt. I believe in round 2 or 3, he literally gave him props half the round. Round 5 was clearly Volk. Volk did awesome. His takedown defense, his will, his cardio are all off the charts. Volk also played to the crowd great and it was a great scene him yelling and getting amped up. But the fact of the matter is, he was in a losing position for most of that round 4. The last thing is that I believe this was a great version of Volk, one who had a competitive match with a force like Islam. Can anyone say this was even close to the best Islam? If they were to run it back, will the outcome be the same? Will it even go the distance? This is it should happen, if volk beats yair and Islam beats the winner of benny and Charles. I enjoy constructive criticism and dialogue so if anyone has some insight feel free to share, thanks.

Neither has defeated an Olympic wrestler in pure wrestling, nor would they. MMA is different. You don't have to take my word for it-take Khabib's. Cujedo and DC is better at wrestling. Imagine how different wrestling would look if you were allowed to sprawl and knee competitors in the head or if there was no fence. Rulesets change the fight, and determine who wins which is subjective to skillsets.

When Islam take charles down or when Charles pull guard Islam couldn't do the same that he has doing in guys bad in grappling with is ground and pound. To take a guy from a weight class under with no significant grappling background and have him do that well vs a lifelong elite grappler is a legit thing to be proud of. The techniques craig had him work on were effective as late stage defenses to an elite grappler. He should be happy. Regardless of result both guys showed that they had another layer to their games that people didn’t expect. Islams striking looked better than people gave him credit for prior and volks grappling looked great. If they gave the win to volk that doesn’t mean Islam didn’t have a good performance striking.

Plus Volk had to make that weight, he was disadvantaged going up a weight class. As for the ko. If you think “zombie” Makhachev was a disadvantage, surely you understand that 10 days notice, coming off the couch, after a arm surgery, cutting 25lb in 10 days against a guy who is massive for a weight class and had a full training camp isn’t a huge disadvantage to Volk. That rematch was nowhere near a worthy fight to the first and nowhere near as fair. Also in no world was the first fight 49-46. You can argue 48-47 either way but Volk cleanly won rounds 4 and 5, Makhachev won rounds 1 and 3, with 2 being very close

Sports are regulated by athletic comissions/federations. When in a country you have to abide by their state's rules. In some countries there's no sanctioning body for MMA so the UFC acts as the sports comission there, but if there's an already existing body that country's rules supercede everything else.
