I just disagree that there's that much taken for granted, e.g., in the GOL. There are localized regions of space, and there are some rules which require probing ones neighbors and summing the states of those neighbors. I suppose some sort of system-wide resonance is also required so that syncronous updating is possible. Why all this talk of displays and computational background?
