Update 3 days later: This has seriously got to be my favorite and MOST INSPIRING LEX INTERVIEW YET! For one thing, I have to keep pausing to ponder. Not science thoughts- but thoughts of philosophy and what could be a widely shared mindset by a majority of humans! I feel this Love coming from math and science and even am writing a book about how math is the universe’s love note to humanity. In my story It is a parental love, but you and Neri have more of a romantic take of the universe and the tools it lays at our feet and what we are supposed to be doing with these tools. It is positively a first crush , an intoxicating infatuation, and i am marveling at it and feel at once vindicated and inspired! I am gobsmacked by the clarity in this science messaging displayed by Neri Oxman. ( And Lex, you get it and in my humble opinion , always have.) It all leads back to love. But, Neri is trying her best to elevate us to a loving state ( vs violent, vs greedy state!) by thinking, thinking, and more thinking. I hear her, and i hear you too Lex. Many of us do. And , these ideas will spread…. But, to take a page from this interview, quite slowly maybe on a plant 🪴 time scale. I am learning so much. I have an hour left to still savor……( 🙏 thank you) Original comment : Yes! Been waiting ! She is one of my muses! Let’s go Neri and thank you Lex🙏 ( oh my gosh and i am sure an inspiration for many many and now- ( yay Lex!) many more.

Being a Design student with engineering interest and with a background of 2 years of a major in Biology, it's pretty rare to find inspiration in people who was able to connect it all. She has become a huge influence and it's quite comforting to know that there's space for us with multiple and diverse interests in which we can link knowledge to come up with something new, something beautiful. She is a fraud. Even the students at MIT don't like her. She is not nice to the undegraduate women who work with her either. She is cosplaying as a scientist and engineer. If you know science and engineering? Nothing she says makes sense. It's double speak This is a shame because MIT has other beautiful female professors actually in engineering and science departments. She got her PhD because her godfather was her advisor. She isn't even well-liked in her home department where she got her PhD. They knew she was a nepo baby. And let's not forget the Epstein connection. Lex was probably encouraged to do this because Bill Ackman (her husband) runs in these tech circles. She also has her students ideate and do the work for her. She is not hands on doing the work. Look at her students' theses. Go to MIT and find out for yourself. You can ask around. This is a "never meet your heroes" situation.

@@Wise__guy your mindset is toxic. We shouldn’t be like crabs pulling others down. The world is a really fucking big place, and we need people of all kinds (not just doctors but also artists. Not just philanthropists but also scientists, explorers, baristas, and grocery clerks). We shouldn’t look at someone who’s dedicated in their respective field and say “oh but there are other problems in which you’re NOT solving.” Of course she’s not solving everything. Who the fuck is? But she’s top-tier in her way. And if we all learn how to be a little like her example, maybe we can make progress in other areas that are so needed

I literally teared up at the revelation that this intricate yet simple dialogue had on me. Neri’s wit and defiance to the norms of contemporary thinking is simply breathtaking, for lack of a better word. I would definitely listen to her talk for hours. My mind just went to places it never has , (given now a mind is as abstract as anything ever could be , now that I’ve watched this). I feel love, passion and guilt for being so naive at nature. The chemistry between these two minds is palpable. Neri is a powerhouse of heart and mind and the first person I’ve seen to actually render Lex awestruck, as we all are who listen to this woman’s brilliance, topped with beauty and charm! Simply killer on all levels. That being said my mind projects forward into the future of what Oxman is doing with biology technology and engineering. Yes, Neri declined partnering with a Japanese company to make glowing fabrics from genetically combining silk worms and spiders for the consumer fashion industry. However, at some point one of her smart Oxman team members might get enticed into selling out Oxmans higher values and principles and help genetically engineer Earths natural order of things into irreversible monstrosities.

Trying to build on Neri's thoughts about imperfection as creating a context for vulnerability: One of the great features of our universe is the realization that we are part of something greater, but we are also _invited_ to take steps in that direction -- to go from being more isolated, to more connected as part of that greater something. One of the most profound ways we do that is through relationship, especially intimate relationship. In that context of being integrated with another person as a new whole, if that is going to be done in the most effective way, there needs to be appropriate vulnerability -- to be able to see and understand not only the self, but the other, not only only the light but also the imperfection and shadow.

I really hope not its really annoying... it detracts from seeing how they react to each other, its just distracting.. I like to see the subtly of how they respond to each other... I think the editor just felt they needed to do something to justify themselves. The beauty of this podcast is being able to see the simple conversation, listen and see them respond to each other. I dont need to see 20 images of a fly from different angles, i get it, its a electron.. i just want to see them giggle together.

I love how, at 1:33:45, she talked about fire as the first technology and as one of the first things that brought humans together in a community. It emerged from vulnerability and the desire to stay warm. This also reminded me of the story of anthropologist Margaret Mead, who said that one of the first signs of civilization was a healed femur. That, too, came from a place of vulnerability that motivated one human to help another. I think it ties in nicely with Neri's idea that love is a driving force in the world. I also believe that, especially considering the femur story, love and care ensured the survival of a species. It all began with that particular human with the broken femur being saved, which may have eventually led to our entire species surviving as a result of the decision made by a human who helped, only to have that lesson passed down from generation to generation.
