Here's a tip about the air bag. When performing any task where an air bag is involved, always disconnect your battery, this way you won't have any surprises from setting off an air bag by mistake. Good video. My wife discovered a wet driver's side floor in our 2009 RX350 so, guess what I am doing this weekend???

Thanks! Great fix and not too difficult after watching your video. I wish I had found your video sooner, I’ve been dealing with this stupid leak for a long time. The part about turning that little black piece in the pillar was very helpful - that saved lots of time and aggravation. … I had success drying the carpets by absorbing as much as I could off the floor with towels and then leaving a dehumidifier in the way back, running constantly for about a week. Ran the extension cord through a crack in the window and taped the opening. When I was able, I would leave the car running with the floor heater on as high/hot as it would go for a couple hours at a time to get the moisture into the air while dehumidifier was running.

Eric , just rerouted my drains on my 2009 Lexus RX 350 ! removed the the side pillars found the drain hoses ( very careful not to damage the airbag). I cut the original hose and fed the new hose into the old one and routed down away from the original drain area along the carpet kick panel and into the factory cut drain grommet hole ( made a hole in the grommet) that is already into the floor of the car and slipped it in and about 4-6 inches down. You are correct about force feeding the new tube up the original tube about 1 to 2 inches ( it won't leak) but for safety I wrapped that connection with electrical tape. Once that is done plug in the new hose into the grommet and out the floor. Test your work by opening your sunroof ,checking that your ports are clean and cleared of dirt ( use good fishing line or weed eater line to clear any obstructions then take a water bottle and slowly pour in to the sunroof drains. You should see and hear water pouring through the pipe coming out about 4 inches underneath the car! Do this for both front and passenger pillars and your problem is solved for about $10 worth of materials . Best of all you can tell Lexus/ Toyota to kiss you butt for developing such a POOR design in the first place! Hope this helps others to DIY and not get ripped off!

Just finished the install on my 2004 RX330. Thank you for all your work expediting this update for our cars. You were spot on with the 3/8” OD hose inserting into the factory hose. And drill size for the grommet. I watched your video the first time and should have just took your advise. Thought I had the factory exit unclogged. Used air guns and all that. Watched the water exit the factory exit path. Apparently the exit path was not clear enough. This was after over an hour blowing it out with air. The water exits from the pinch welds underneath the car. Terrible design. FYI to the people who think they do not need to do what this video tells you to do. You need to do it or it will happen again the next time it rains. You may not notice it on the surface but the padding will get damp and it will smell. You need to reroute the hoses as shown in this video. I though it would be fine. Once these factory exits are clogged you will get water in the car. You may not notice it because it didn’t rain as hard when you first noticed. Just relocate the hoses so you wont have to do it twice like I did. Thanks for making the video you are a lifesaver. This would have become a nightmare for me with all the lost time messing with the same problem over and over.

Why not run the hose to the drain hole with possibly a smaller diameter hose and just leave it there instead of drilling a new hole?

The reason why I did what the video showed is because I could not unclog the factory exit enough no matter what I did because you cannot see what you are trying to unclog. In the end relocating the hose would have been faster if I would have just did it from the beginning because I had to pull the front seats and dry everything out for the second time. Yes you could run the hose to the factory drain but I thought over time the hose might get smashed or restricted over time being under the carpet making the downward turn to exit the floor board. Happy to report the smell is finally 100% gone and no more wet carpet.i used bleach after drying wiping the floor boards then the summer heat and time took care of the rest of the smell.

The problem will return, it is a very poor design. Actually, you cannot tell if you cleared it completly. if there is a foreign object clogging it, then how do you know you cleared it, and the odds of seeing it come out of a tiny sliver of a hole on the ground, is nearly impossible to tell. just a word to the wise.

The tip I would add on drying out the carpet is that foam underneath will never dry with the fan on top of it. You need to pull the carpet up and shoot he fan under it. I actually separated the foam from the carpet in all four spots (driver front, driver rear, passenger front, passenger rear) and dried the foam outside the car, then put it back in. There are drain plugs under the car - I suggest people look under and pop the little plugs out - if you stick your finger up there and it still feels wet, the foam is still wet and will build up mildew/mold. The carpet can feel dry even if the foam underneath is still soaked.

Agreed, I always put the carpet fan underneath by placing pieces of plastic or wood to prop it up, open up the car on a sunny day or in a covering, and then dry the top.

All in the same day, i discovered the leak on our newly acquired 05 RX, gutted the interior, drove to lowes, and did this fix, thanks to the video. Absolutely no leaking now. Fun part now is drying out all the carpet. It was sitting on a dealer lot for a month so all 4 floorboards got to feel it!

Great video, I like the idea of upgrading. How about a hose that is bigger than the one you have so the original fits inside.?It will Never will clog then. I know it would need a bigger hole in the firewall.

Thanks for the video. It was very informative, I was about to perform the procedure in the video because after raining the passenger side on my lexus rx350 was soaking wet, but after further inspeccion, I opened the sunroof and pour some water on the gutterr of the sunroof, and there is a drain hole on each side, the passanger was clogged , to unclogged you can use a piece of wire, I used 2 feet of thermostat wire (the one with 6 wires) is flexible enough to go thru the hose with out making any damaged. Once the water went down I stopped feeding the wire. Problem fixed, no more water on the carpet. I hope this is helpful. UPDATE: After a week took car to a carwash twice after the second time, I look under the carpet and the padding was wet again, I removed the floor panel that illuminates the lexus name, and I think I found two small holes with rust around it, I think water comen in thru those holes, I'll keep and eye on it and I will update.

THANK YOU. Leaks have been a nightmare and mold smell. Dried it all out and did similar on a 2009 RX350. I did both sides but passenger was the beginning. There are already floor drains to use. Also: I recommend electrician pliers for releasing the panel. Needle nse were too thick.

I recently fixed our RX330 with a soaked carpet issue without cutting the drainage tubes. I'll add that it's worth the time to remove the lowest two wheel liner screws to give you better access to the area that gets gummed up with sludge. I used a combination of a shop-vac and banging on the running board to get all the crap to drop down. Was amazed at how much there was. Really fine grey talcum powder consistency dust, leaves, etc. One other tip/trick is to use a 17 gauge wire to clean out the sunroof drainage tubes. I used a .110 string trimmer line at first and didn't have great success. The 17 gauge wire is bendy enough to feed down the line but more solid than the string trimmer material to push out the blockage. Recommend clearing it out on the bottom first, then running the wire, cleaning it again & then testing with some water before bolting everything back up.

I just spent $2500 on my 2011gx460 at the dealer for an ecu. The ecu had to be programmed so that's why I took it to the dealer. It had been through the car wash many times no issues. My wife took it through about a month ago, all the lights on the dash lit up. Water poured in at the passenger side sun visor and traveled down the passenger side a pillar and caused major electrical malfunction. I was told the sunroof seal needed replaced. It was allowing more water in than the drain could handle. I had them replace it while they had it. I still don't trust taking it through the car wash even though the dealership assured me it would be ok. I might copy cat what what you did Thanks for the video.

my rx330 also get water inside during rain. the carpet gets wet. I felt the water drip onto my shin. I also see my dashboard gauges going wacky (while car is in park, speedometer repeatedly moving to 40MPH and back to zero, red "brake" displayed on dash when nothing is failing). Now engine starts and runs for 20 seconds then the dash lights turn off and the engine stalls. I connected my OBD2 code reader (on-board diagnostic code reader) but reader says "failing to communicate with PCM (computer module)" which I believe is caused by water having dripped into the connect socket and/or the PCM box itself. will wait for the box to dry so the engine will not stall. wonder if the leak is at the roof where the drain hose starts.

@@jaytomheldman5170 Sorry for the issues you are dealing with. While my gx460 was at the dealership tech said the sunroof seal was deformed and allowed more water in than the drains could handle. Yes the had checked the drain tubes and found them to be clear. I wish you lots of luck.

it seems my car has a significant power drain when the car is turned off and key in off position (no radio, no headlamps, etc). I haven't been driving more than a few miles a day. When I attach my power bank-jump starter to the battery, I can start the engine. when I was connecting an OBD2 (PCM --computer module) diagnostic code reader and it would not communicate with the PCM, the issue was that the battery charge was too low. I connected the power bank again to the battery and the code reader functioned correctly. Now I need to get the battery charged enough so the engine will not stall after 20 seconds! will probably connect another car's batter with jumper cables for a few minutes while my car engine is running. that should build up the charge in my battery.

@@jaytomheldman5170 You have the same bad luck I have . I had a rodant or rodents get into our 2011 gx460 around early November. Luckily I had comprehensive insurance on it. They chewed all the sound deadening material off the back of the dash pad and 27 wires chewed. The estimate of the repair was $145 from being totalled. The dealership was able to repair the wiring without replacing the harness. If it needed a harness it would've definitely totalled it. Well we got the vehicle back and I thought the nightmare was over but it wasn't. The vehicle sat the second weekend after we got it back un-driven Friday, Saturday and Sunday. When my wife got in it Monday to go to work the battery was totally discharged no dash lights the starter didn't click. I jumped it and she went to work and as soon as meineke opened i made arrangements for them to find the problem. Meineke had previously replaced the battery so I had them test it and it failed. Also the alternator was only putting out half the amps it should. The meineke tech found that there was a parasitic draw and it was coming from the module that controls the park assist and the adaptive headlights. When it was disconnected there was no parasitic draw. They ordered the module but unfortunately that didn't the problem is on downstream from there. They disconnected that park assist module and let us have it back. Now the afs light flashes all the time. I'm almost wish that it had been totalled. I hate to take it back to the dealership and pay $205 flat rate. Good Luck to you.

If your speaking of the triangular panel on either side, 1st Remove the rubber door gasket. Then pop the name plate off with a soft pry tool as it is held by 3 clips. Then the panel should be exposed to remove.

About to try this on my RX300. I have a compressor and have regularly blown out the lines, but with heavy rains the problem comes back. Also bought an Ozone machine on amazon for $50, supposedly it will kill any existing mold and remove any odor. Might be a better buy than a fan if this has happened to your car more than once.

I first had my problem and thought I had it all cleared out. Then painstakingly dried out the car using fans like you have, got it to stop stinking using lysol and lava rocks, and thought I had the problem solved. Got a huge rain and then BOOM there were puddles in the car! Whatever I did to get the drains working again undid themselves. What a nightmare. I am doing your process now - I saw this video the first time and wish I would have just done it then!

So sorry I did not reply sooner and I am sure you have fixed the problem, but for others, I removed the bottom floor door panel with the gasket. Use a Peyton tool to lift it and then you can put towels under the carpet and use a small fan to blow under the carpet. You need to crest a space so air can circulate.

I did notice when we opened the back hatch there was water leaking from the trunk door, any idea how that’s happening or how to address it? Might just be a clogged drain plug. Water leaked all on the floor and puddle in the front over head head light. I used orange trim line sent it down the hole as far as it could. Got my hand drill attached the trim line inside,locked it and turned it on slowly. it clean the line and the water flowed out the bottom of the car. Wet vac the excess water, plugged the wet vac hoes in the other hole and blow dried it dry. Daughter needs the car for the evening so it's ready to go. I like you solution for the near future. How far did your carpet get soaked? Mine is soaked all the way behind the driver seat into the rear seat. Is it safe to assume it's only from the A-pillar drain? Or is there another drain in the B-pillar also? Thanks

all the way, and when i parked it on an uphill, it went to the back seats and wicked to the back to the trunk area carpet only. If you find water in your real wheel well, then suspect the tail lights leaking. Replace the entire light or just the gasket, it is cheap insurance.

Make sure you can see the back side of the floor board you are drilling into. use a 1/2" drill to start and make an underside hole to accommodate the hose.

My wife just bought a 2005 rx330. Will this happen? As in, this is 100% needed? There's been alot of rain lately and I haven't noticed anything but there's stains on the inside near roof ,near the head rests. Previous owner seemed kinda shady,said he was from Arizona and theres also craks inside on the passenger dashboard and the wood trim on bith doors. Haven't had a good chance to really inspect for wayer damage but the roof is just full of miss and crap... Definitely bot garaged and has 220k miles... I hope this car will go another 59k to 100k. This guy just gave me a bad feeling,also because we lut 1000$ down, and said wed pick it up in a few days and pay the test. Well he had the bill of sale.typed up for 4k when we payed $4800 and when his wife asked ehy we only oaid 3800 when we got there, she was surprised to hear he had received a deposit... Anyone who keeps that from their wife would lie to a stranger. But anyways, im just making sure theres nothing to worry about. He kept saying garaged but ive never seen it in a garage and he had too many vehicles for it to have been garaged. He would have had to move 5 cars... Im sorry,just venting frustration, but I will try this trick if i see any water damage. I have already done the sunroof reset. Because it wasnt closing properly. Took me a few minutes to find it online and im hoping that was the only real issue.

Headrest stains are different than this posted issue. It is related to the roof seal. What I posted will more than likely happen in its lifetime. My thoughts on this, are if it aint broken now and you have had good rains,,,, then just wait till it comes.

I agree, s..w you Lexus. With all the little problems I have had with this SUV, S..w you Lexus. This guy is great. Another quick fix...no labor and $25. Have a piece of that magnetic car sign material cut to fit well over the sunroof. 2 Minutes to lay down and get squared. Might take two people. That's it. Not noticeable and does the job. Fixed mine this way and it's 100% satisfactory. This shuts down use of sunroof but so what.

@@katyanderson8389 Yes, Almost 2 years with same piece of material. I run it thru the car wash and all. You need about 8 to 10 inch overhang front and back to give the magnet material something to stick to. I only have about 2 inches on the sides and that seems to be OK. The top rail may get in your way from side to side but you can cut around it if you want more then the 2 inch overlap. You just need to make sure that there is enough size to stick to the metal.

My roof rack bolt gaskets leaked and ran water into that A pilar. I ended up finding a kit on ebay to remove roof rack and replace bolts and seals. Came with a black trim cap to cover bolts.

How did you get the kick panel off by the emergency brake?? It looks like that was already off when the video started. That's where I'm having trouble.

The kick panels all pop off but I believe you have to start at the firewall and pull to the side out towards the center of the car and then it should pull out. You will need to take the step panel off. I avoided taking the door post plastic off. It’s been a bit so it’s like a puzzle. Get a plastic set of removal tools on Amazon. They are cheap.

Great video comrade. I just cleaned my GX470 drain holes in the sun roof track with a shopvac and sprayed some lubricant for giggles. I figured what goes in the hole wont block it. Its the rust pieces that break off that block the water from entering the hole that caused my wet carpet. When I moved the rust pieces the water resting in the track gushed down the drain hole. I poured more water down the holes and its flowing out the bottom like it should. Guess I have to add cleaning the track to the maintenance schedule on the 2005 gx with 283000 miles on the ticker. My sunroof drains are fine but the cavity on the frame must be clogged. I could do what the video says but that wont fix anything else that drains into the frame cavity. The frame cavity drips but not enough to keep it from backing up to the overflow on the inside of the driver side. Any tips on unclogging the frame cavity?

use a straight wire and run it down from the top of the sunroof with it open, be gentle.

@@TheHumanSwissArmyKnife the sunroof drain doesnt lead to the cavity drain that stops up but I did find it. The sunroof drain hose stops well short of the hole in the cavity that drains out.

@@kevb1050 there’s another video you have to take off the side running boards to clean out that cavity. I had so much mud and leaves in mine. Get the push rivets on Amazon cause they all break.

Hi...Finally someone who knows about these annoying Lexus leaks. Why isn't there a recall? This is crazy. You spend big bucks for a Lexus and it has so many issues that I never had with other cars. Anyway, are you in the NY area by chance? I'm a woman and don't feel equipped to handle pulling the car apart. Besides Lexus what kind of person would I seek out to fix this.

Any shop should be capable of doing this, they will probably give you the speech of "We're not liable if this doesn't fix the issue" due to them having to drill out behind the firewall and for liability purposes.

I recently sold a 2016 Toyota corolla to my neighbor and a month later she started having alot of of leak problems. I feel horrible. The crazy thing is I never had any issues in my four years owning the car. I believe the hose might be clogged.

i never removed the carpet. I lifted it and put mini carpet fans under it. I did not want to lift the seats out etc. its very messy. So then i put 2x4's on end so i could create a wind flow. Depending on how long the carpet sat in water, i used antimicrobial spray to kill any potential mold. If you have a bad smell. you may have to remove the carpet. e

Great video and I agree... Screw you Lexus! In my case however, screw the person that put my windshield in. But while I was fixing that leak, I went ahead and did this as well. I had to do the same thing with my Hummer H3. Same issue. Drains clog, stupid way of draining these things. So, while I'm screwing people, might as well say "Screw you GM!" :-) Again, great video!

There are holes where the electronic boxes are connected on the driver and passenger sides. I just took my RX400H apart to finally find out where the water is coming from. I had to take it to a car wash to watch where the water would come in and this was it. Going to most likely do this solution as well as plugging up those holes with silicone. Had to take my carpets out to figure this out, and you will need to remove the Styrofoam insert on the drivers side. I may be making a video on this to help other owners because I am sick of my carpets getting wet whenever my car gets wet

Why not just plug in the side hole where the leak is coming from? I still can see water coming down from running board. After cleaning my running board, the water might get forced to exit there.

where my pillar and headliner meet.. that seam on the driverside is where the water begins. auto glass place made sure drains are clear at the top... and cleaned a bunch of dirt near bottom of drains.. I am still getting water at the pillar and the headliner seam then that drips on to carpet and whole pillar gets wet. I have a 2006 rx400h. worried about water, mold and hybrid battery.

I like the video and how well everything was explained, but, this is not really the issue(s). The issues are spiders and whatnot clogging up the drainage tube OUTLET and debris clogging up the INLET. Also, have fun if it is one of the REAR inlets that is clogged. I am dealing with that with my 01 GS430. If you find water in the cabin at ALL, check all four drains and find out which one(s) are clogged. Bare minimum, part so that/those ones are higher than the remaining ones and at least you should not have any more water get in. Then you can diagnose and attack the real issue.

This is above the outer rear tail light but leaking above and onto the tonneau cover. The entire cover around the third drivers side window (the one that does not open) has water damage. Your sunroof video is fabulous.

Just some compressed air into the drain ports on each side of the sun roof will unclog the hoses. No need to tear the car apart and run new hoses.

where at the bottom does the original drain hose outflow to ground? at bottom of chasis horrible design, three times you had to do what about leaks? make sure water test at front of sunroof doesn't overflow and run down outside of the original drain hose. pull back the wheel well plastic and look at the steel wheel well near drivers legs for what reason? since there's no video instructing how to remove the trim at the A-pillar where driver's side speaker is near windshield, why don't you show us how to remove the trim (ok credit you for showing us the clip at top which must be rotated 90 degrees with needle nose pliers)? why cut the original hose instead of just using the entire length of the original hose?

You’re lucky. When my sunroof got clogged, it flooded the passenger floorboard and fried the computer unit. $3500 repair.

I flooded the floorboards 3 times before i figured it out but did not have a computer issue, that is a bummer. There are two culprits in this, the roof drain and the tail light seals.
