any other suggestions on fixing / setting up the a/c? the last method hadn’t worked

You have to get in touch with those fellows in Hong Kong. Mine gave me lots of trouble to set up but I eventually got it working. The programing makes no sense at all. Don’t think logically just follow to the letter step by step in order. You will never figure it out on your own because none of it makes sense, but it will work.
