There are two overtrail editions, a base and a plus. This one appears to be the plus, but if you get the base it still has all the important off road stuff and is significantly cheaper (until dealers inevitably mark them up, at least.) The base starts at $69k while the + starts at $77k. I'm eager to get my hands on a used one in the future, and I'll be looking for a base model, not the plus. For somebody who wants to offroad I think that one will be the sweet spot as the plus version just seems to be filled up with luxury features that I personally don't need. They are great looking rigs, can't wait for them to hit dealers so we can start seeing some builds.

Lexus is one of a few manufacturers that lets you get heated/ventilated seats and a few other creature comforts in the low/base trim models, whereas everyone else tends to lock them up to mid tier or top tier. That's why I never see a need to buy a Lexus vehicle beyond base/premium- the luxury versions generally add stuff that no one cares about (rear door kick sensor, power 3rd row, rear air suspension, rear entertainment, worse wheels for ride quality).

A nice choice for an upscale off roader. As an owner of a built GX460, I am a bit dismayed that the front fascia isn't more modular and accommodating of a winch bumper, as mentioned in the video. I had to deal with this on the 460, and it is a PITA, making for a loooong day to install a bumper. I am also a bit dismayed that the new powertrain is only 2 mpg better than the old one, albeit with more power. I'll stick with my NA V8 for that tradeoff.
@jimmy-buffett11 ай бұрын

@@stevecarlson2346 it's all about the template that the bumper folks give you. I have an Expedition One bumper on my 4Runner and had to cut a bit of plastic. The parking sensors seem too low to put a bumper over them, looks like they would need to be relocated.

Can you please ask the engineer why the overtrail has this plastic on the transmission hump in front of the rear seat and the premium has the transmission hump covered in what looks to be the same material as the floor which is how it should be for the overtrail? LX600 does come in a more off-road package with front and rear lockers. That is a level above GX550 Overtrail with only the rear locker. The Off Road package is not available in the US/North America version of LX600. You can purchase that in the Japanese market and certain markets. LC300 GR Sport also can be speced with front and rear locker. With the current yen to USD rate, it is cheaper to buy LX600 with Off Road package than in the US. But you'd have to use it in Japan... So unless you are Japanese or married to a Japanese, it is pretty much a no go for most of us in the US. Same with the LC300 GR Sport, 8 million yen for diesel or 7.7 million yen for TTV6 petrol; that is about $54,500 USD!

I was buying 4Runner parts blindly way back when because the 460 didn’t have anything available when I started my build. This thing comes from the factory ready to go off-road with 33s. Most people should be able to leave it pretty close to stock and still be able to do 80% of what Colorado offers.

In all honesty, I think the GX550 Overtrail models are more Land Cruiser than the new Land Cruiser 250. eKDSS is a phenomenal system. The manual disconnecting swaybar in the LC250 is a step back from eKDSS. 3 to 5 years from now the Overtrail is going to be an incredibly high value lease return.
@PeakDecline11 ай бұрын
If you plan on never upgrading suspension then eKDSS is an awesome system. But if you want to upgrade the suspension to long travel with extra long control arms and such, then eKDSS makes that far more difficult and costly. I also have some questions about how the differential in the front is setup. The GX 550 has the 3.4L V6 engine found in the Tundra. The Tundra has a front differential design that is incompatible with front lockers. The LC250 meanwhile is the 2.4L hybrid shared with the new Tacoma. The new Tacoma's front differential is compatible with a front locker. If GX550/LC250 match their engine siblings... then that's another area where the LC250 could be superior for those planning to modify for more capability. I also think the body work on the LC250 looks like it'll be easier to fit steel bumpers front and rear, or at least require far less cutting.
@edwardpeters470011 ай бұрын
@GnosticDevice For the type of vehicle it is, 33ˋs as available factory are sufficient. As for suspension modifications, itˋs different, not impossible. Thereˋs no shortage of tastefully modified LC200ˋs and TRD Offroad 5th gen 4Runners. Bumpers will be a bit more difficult for those who donˋt like cutting plastic, but no worse than it is for LX570 drivers.
@PeakDecline11 ай бұрын
@@edwardpeters4700 If you think 33s are fine then that's cool, this is probably the right vehicle for you and eKDSS the right system. I want more capability and I believe the LC250 will be easier to build to that capability. LC200 vs LX570 is a perfect example of why these complicated systems can be an issue for modifying. The LX570 with its ACH system has far fewer aftermarket options. And yet again the bumper situation... less options, more cutting. I'm just explaining to you why people would choose the LC250 over the GX550. I think it'll be easier to modify and have more options. But if you don't want to go that far... then sure the GX550 seems right for you.
@edwardpeters470011 ай бұрын
@GnosticDevice 33ˋs are fine for the next vehicle Iˋm currently contemplating (mostly a still capable but nice daily for my wife). Going harder or doing more difficult trails is what my 80 series is for.

@@PeakDecline Total Chaos offers mid travel KDSS compatible arms for the 4Runner/GX460 so I am not sure why that wouldnt be possible with these new ones. Additionally, the pictures and videos I've seen of the GX550 eKDSS system, it uses conventional sway bar end links as opposed to the bar being mounted directly to the arm like on the GX460. So i really dont think that will be an issue. You can keep the end link mounts in the same position on the arms and still run longer travel setup while retaining decent handling on the road.

@@kylewilliams5219no I think he's right. Look at the current GX/Prado. Most 1st owners use em as a daily. Then the 2nd Or 3rd owners are the ones who build em up and hit the trails

Same thing with the new Bronco's. They sell thousands and hardly see any of them on the trails. Since the majority of the owners of the GX are women, who think the outdoors is walking in the park, I doubt many will see anything more challenging than a gravel parking lot.

I blame KZbin. Influencers always talk about how "off-road" capable a GX is. They are missing the reason people buy them. Sure a twenty year old used Lexus GX might be taken off-road. Show me one person, that knows anything about going off-road, that would spend around $70k + on a GX just to beat it up. You can get just about anywhere on a paved road in America. If you require an off-road capable vehicle for the area you live in, your probable just going to get a pickup truck. Americans aren't doing the school run through fields like people in England or traveling on undeveloped roads in sub-sarhan Africa. How did it take a pothole? How comfy is the ride on I-95? These are the real questions. You should make a poll asking people if they would buy this truck and take it off a paved surface.

"Show me one person, that knows anything about going off-road, that would spend around $70k + on a GX just to beat it up." /raises hand I help run a large offroading club here in Denver, I plan on buying one of these and offroading it. Maybe in a few years when the aftermarket has figured out how to put a winch on it.

What do you people think happens off road? Do you believe people are running into rocks and just smashing up bumpers and quarter panels? It is possible to wheel without wrecking the shit out of a truck. Plenty of people do it. If you've ever been off road you'd realize there are plenty of tracks that are just tracks that still require 4wd and 4lo to crawl through so you aren't damaging the crap out of a trail. That puts no effort on any vehicle and no damage. Not every owner puts their truck into a rock. No one is dropping their truck in a mud pit either. There's plenty of offroading in between that is still mellow and yet gets you out into the country.

@@d1sturb3d119 exactly. I’ve been plenty of places in Moab, backcountry Utah, Mexico, Colorado, and I believe with oversized tires (32-35” and up) and skill you can actually get through most things without damaging your vehicle

Just saw one at the auto show. It was pretty nice. I think if I had been looking to replace my former LR4 with something similar this would be high in the running. I love that engine. When I used the builder it came in at just under $73K which is actually a pretty good deal these days.

Really wishing they had put a 3rd row in this one. As a 4th Gen 4runner owner (built up for off roading in Colorado), I now have a family and am ready to upgrade to the LC or 550 but need a 3rd row. Here's to hoping they decide to put one in in a future year.
