Lexus IS200 Throttle Body Explanation - ETCSi problems

Why is my IS200 1G-FE so slow? the specs look ok on paper, you can feel as if it's holding back off the line, but once it is moving the performance feels normal or at least what i would expect for 160hp. this is a version toyota's ETCSi that uses one throttle blade, a throttle cable and 2 TPS.

I like the set up....it prevents me from over revving the car when it's cold...and with all the Speed Cameras and Speed Bumps strategically placed..I don't do racing starts anymore..show me a Twisty country road 😆 and you will need smthn special to overtake a well driven is200 Sport LSD equipped. ..

Great to see that someone is working on DBW of this car, because it was implemented very bad.. I have a manual and si annoying when i change the gears around 2.4k RPM, rev flick is just ridiculous. Never saw anything like that on any car. I've pulled a ETCS-i fuse out and ''weld'' the butterfly that was fully cable operating....Guess what....After 2 revs engine automatically dies... Without BDW this car will have 2x better response.... I hope you will manage to figure out how to make it work... Respect to you

I like the set up. .it won't let rev if it's still cold is a brilliant idea...it's not a car for racing starts...in B road very few cars will keep up with a LSD equipped Manual IS200...power you can use..all the time...i ve one😆..IS200 Sport. .MT. .

@@blackwersus If you only disconnect the stepper motor you will be able to rev the engine to limiter. You also need to weld or bolt the butterfly to cable. You will have the check engine light, TRC flashing and you will lose the idle control. Most of people do it for drifting, not for street. @@deboxonline Thanks for the info. Yes it will be a beater car so I'm not worried about losing some comfort. It is good to keep daily and a project car separate.

1:06 when you bring the throttle cable weight around there, could you tighten the cable at all so that it stays right there, then it's right at the point of opening? or would that make the idling shit? If that was possible and not a pain in the ass to do, it would be a lot more responsive just from that. I noticed the 'swing' of that cable weight or whatever it is when cleaning the top of the throttle body, spins to that bit in the video then you gotta press it further to open the butterfly valve. Taking the whole body off is a pain the ass too if you wanna give the whole thing a good check over, get to the intake or clean it down.

Any progress? I think of getting is200 myself, but i really would like to convert it to fully mechanical throttle. Even if it needs a custom ecu.

I had a random idea regarding this. I haven't tried it myself but it would potentially allow for better first gear characteristics. The idea is to intercept the speed pulse sensor signal from the transmission with an artificial frequency, essentially tricking the ECU you're constantly driving at 150kph or something similar. Worth a shot maybe? This would possibly bypass your speedometer though but the car would get WOT in first gear.

So been thinking more about this recently and i think this method would unfortunately throw off the odometer as well. So it's not a viable solution either unfortunately. So the only other idea I can think of is to run an adapter (perhaps 3d printed) and run a throttlebody and IACV of another car. As well as another ECU. It's not the easiest fix though.

Sorry to necro post a little bit, but I'm thinking of this application for installing this engine onto different gearboxes in different cars. Say for instance my ta22, the flywheel and gearbox bolt straight up to the 1g block, but they have a physical cable for all speedo and odo drive. So would it be possible to trick the computer like this for that sort of application?

Could the electronic controlled side of the throttle be manipulated by an after market ECU telling it to copy the users pedal input? Because even if the electronic throttle was swapped for a normal wire, some computer input would be needed to tell the car why it can’t control itself.

i know there are ETCSi controllers out there that manipulate the signal to give more throttle response. more so applicable to the JZX110 & JZS171 - you may even wish to look into the premium japan throttle kit - although i don't see one specific for the 1G-FE IS200.. i fitted one of these throttle kits to the ETCSi VVTi 1JZGTE that i converted my IS200 to - and it worked brilliantly! highly rate the product!

FlatDreams i haven't yet, i have purchased a GX100 Chaser Throttle body, which is a simple cable throttle body, no double TPS ECTSi etc.. however it uses a 3 pin ISCV (idle speed control valve) where as the GXE10 tb does not, it has inbuilt idle control in the ETCSi function.. it will 100% bolt onto the same plastic inlet manifold.. but the electronics is what has stopped me. even if i got the ISCV working to control idle, of course i would loose cruise control, but i would also need to overcome the second TPS, which reads differently to the first/primary TPS.. basically it would require FULL aftermarket management, not a piggy back Greddy manage or unichip etc.. to control it, like a traditional flyby wire unit... or the full control of the GX100 TB with it's 3 pin ISCV, and do away with 2 TPS etc... looks like anyone wanting sharp and crisp throttle response will have to look into something like that, or beams 3SGE, or 2JZ-GE swap (with all the other bits that go along with that.)

@@ThatCarChannelOfficial weld the two together that the cables connected too, cut the bar conneced to the outer ring qith cable kn amd then cable tie the elctrobic motor open... full throttle when wanted Throws up eml and trc light will flash. Raise idle 100 revs to solve cold start issues

Hey bro. I have a toyota altezza 1gfe, my throttle response is lagging. Put the air con on and it's worse. Idle is good, coils are good, I changed the tps as well. Can't seem to figure out why it's the way it is. Taking off from the lights or something and it takes a while for the throttle to do something. Leaving home after warming up the car to go somewhere and it lags for about 30 - 40 meters making a bogging type noise and then the throttle will start to kick in. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

BenJnr G.I do you know someone with the same car you can drive and compare? The throttle is lazy but not really that lazy.. it sounds like it’s stuck in ‘snow mode’.. assuming you have done the basics like run a few tanks of high octane fuel, checked air filter, how is the oil - sometimes poor service history can get oil crud in the filter screen partially blocking the VVTi solenoid, which affects cam phasing.

Nah I don't know anyone else with the same car, but I serviced it as soon as I got it. Only had the car going on 2 months now. Changed the rocker cover gasket as it was leaking oil from it, the vvti screen was blocked big time, got a new one. It's a bit better now but still lags. How would I know if it's stuck in snow?

i changed my old throttle body it was broken , installed a new oem one now my car rpm is always at 1200 when in neutral. Does anyone know what could have gone wrong or how to fix it ?

Thats why i have delay when i sudden accelerate on the pedal because of this?? There is latency.

Thermostat is on the engine side of the lower radiator hose, the coolant temp switch is in the lower radiator tank, it’s the only switch/sensor in the bottom tank, I can’t remember if it’s the left or right hand side.

Well thats some...i have an altezza as200 and it gives full trottle all the way, same 1gfe. The flap fully opens. Its a manual trottle body

Awesome, maybe the lower grades came with that setup? I would also say that it should have a completely different way to control traction control, cruise control, idle speed etc etc

@@joshuacarter713 It's a 1G-FE VVTi Beams that have the classic throttle style (it should say Beams on the air filter), and the normal 1G-FE VVTi have the ETCSi

Fuck that's a bummer lol. I'm looking to buy one of these cars and currently just researching them a little bit. I want it to be a bit of a drift car so this crappy throttle system is a big let down. I hate electronic throttles with all my heart lol but I still think the IS200 is a really great car in the other aspects. Clearly the ECU is way too advanced to allow for any mechanical hack fix for this problem / design flaw and any attempt to solve it would completely throw off the fuel ratio. But if you're up for a new ECU + re-tune it's fixable I guess.

if it was a car that weighed 500kg it would be frightfully fast :) even something around the 900kg mark like an early corolla 110hp would be plenty to have fun with..

@@tobywarren6151 which gen celica? the is200 is around 1500, and the 1g is a pretty heavy engine. if you get a 900kg 1g celica you probably have it stripped out pretty hard. and a stripped is200 is around 1150-1200 depending on how thorough you are.

@@stefano3124 i wrote a stripped out is200. You can easily dump 200kg of weight if you drop seats, stereo, sound damping, spare wheel etc.

My chaser runs with 1GFE when i floor it, it gives me HP as much as i want, this one is 1GFE "B.E.A.M.S" i guess

I have a GX100 throttle body - it does not have ETCSi, it has ETCS just like the jzx100 1JZ variants. That’s a whole generation older than this one. The gxe10 is200 is built on the jzx110/jzs171 ‘platform’ shares many many mechanical parts and also has the same generation of ETCSi. I am only assuming you have a GX100 chaser (or they might be called a GX101 is not 100% sure)

Yep there a normal style throttle, I wanted to convert the etcsi back to that! But due to the idle control and sensors (almost like having 2 TPS) it was almost impossible to work out.. then I went down 1JZ route anyway 😎

If it has a 1G-FE it's an is200. Altezza has a motor called 3S-GE

AX53 wrong, Altezza’s SXE 10 chassis are the ones that came with the 3sge and the AXE10 chassis came with the 1GFE.

Sky Factory japan makes a throttle kit that makes the etcs-i throtlle almost electro mechanical 1:1 - it is by far the best option i have found, and around $200 USD shipped anywhere in the world. they make them for JZS171/JZX110 1JZGTE, and Altezza 3SGE as they all use the ETCS-i system. it allows for full retention of the idle, cruise control and all normal behaviours, but alters the input/actuation to be almost full 1:1. email them at Shy Factory - shyfactory.japan@gmail.com

It’s a great setup I agree, the programming though could have been soo much better, even if the ‘pwr’ button was utilised to ‘liven’ up the response and allow full throttle when full throttle is requested etc. in normal mode it’s fine.
