Lexus RX350 Water Pump Replacement Tips

Just done one this afternoon. Didn't jack up motor either. As you said just a tedious job but not hard. Was making sure i didnt forget to tighten one of the many waterpump bolts lol Took me 6 hours taking my time. dont know why they say 10.5 hours Next time if i had to do another one hitting it quick reckon 4 hours

toyota pays 3 hrs which ive done alot of them and got it down. The tightest job was on an avalon

So you basically removed it from the bottom through the fender liner by removing the crankshaft pulley? Do you need a special tool to remove and torque the bolt?

I'm sorry it's been a long time and I can't remember but I think I was able to pull it up through the top after raising the engine up and removing the parts on top that were in the way

@@alouiciousjackson5812 Thanks - you mention in the job removing the crank pulley so figured. I’m attempting to DIY this and don’t have techstream to mess with any modules unplugging the ECU up top or disconnecting the AC Compressor

Mine just went out at 130k on a 2017 RX450H. Called the dealer and they quoted me $4,300 and said it required the entire engine to be removed! ...my local Toyota/Lexus mechanic charged me $1,390, including thermostat, coolant, and new belts.

@@brentthomas6273 Wow that's crazy. Even the local dealer here knows that trick of doing it without removing the engine. I don't know if it's ignorance or just profit margin with your local dealer!

Hello, I have seen many videos where guys are jacking the engine up. I am worried for transfer case as my RX350 is AWD

Yes, it's not really necessary to Jack the engine up. This one was AWD also.

Did you support the engine in some way before removing the engine mount?

I think I supported it with the shop crane before removing them but can't remember exactly now

I can't remember exactly now but I probably supported it with a jack under the engine with a wooden block. I had previously commented about a shop crane but was referring to the wrong video

Is normal to have a 2nd water pump go on my 2016 RX 350? First one went at 60k miles most recent was yesterday at 103k.

Do you check your coolant to make sure it is full? Water pumps shouldn’t be going out like that. I’ve seen most water pumps last over 200K miles. If you don’t regularly check your coolant and it’s running low, it’ll damage your water pump.

@brentthomas6273 I did it for fun! Had to remove it like three times thoo but my lexus with 300k might give me another 100k! And it's not 10 hrs! I did the water pump, thermostat, all gaskets, drive belt, alternator and battery! I started at 12 and finished at 7! And that's with making multiple trips to the autoparts store!

I was damn lucky that the car was under warranty ; the water pump failed at 77k . I bet Toyota is using cheap water pump on their cars. Everything is pain to maintain this car , I don’t think I ever had to change a water pump in a Honda but Toyota they do fail before 100k .

i had a 06 is350 145k miles and never did a waterpump. now i have a 2016 rx350 w/ 50k and i think the waterpump is leaking. 🤦‍♂️
