The comments show people did not listen to the video: - He did not say BMWs are more reliable than Lexus. Only that Lexus is now having issues because they are forced to use smaller, turbo charged engines. BMW went through this process and have better engines and engine support systems now. - Yes, there are still recalls on BMWs. Many of the recalls people are pointing to are from BMWs from the same years and engines that are described as being very unreliable in the video. Saying the a water pump recall on a N55 platform disproves this video when he literally points out how bad the plastic water pumps on BMWs were shows you were too busy writing comments to listen. - He in no way is telling you to buy a BMW over a Lexus. If you still want a Lexus, by all means get one. He is just pointing out that you should be cautious about the Lexus you are purchasing and do your homework. Just like you should be very cautious before buying a used BMW. Don't assume that just because Lexus has great reliability means these new turbo charged engines will be without any issues.

He says that 'in 2024 Lexus reliability and BMW reliability are much closer' but the figures show you are more than 38% more likely to have a failure with a BMW than with a Lexus He says of BMW 'clearly they're much better than the average' quoting figures which indicate they are actually only 1% better. For reference Lexus are 28.5% better than average.

Honestly speaking I’ve found Lexus depreciates about the same as a bmw does, at least here anyway. A 2 year old bmw 5 series with 30kmiles goes from 49k to about 26-28k whereas the Lexus ES goes from about 46k to about 20-23k with the same time and mileage roughly speaking.

I've been through 8 BMWs with minimal or no problems. They have been more reliable than many other brands I have owned. I laugh at how Lexus owners push the notion that repairing a Lexus at the dealer cost a fraction of what BMW. Having taken Lexus to the dealer, they have been on par (and in some cases more expensive) than my Bimmers. The main benefit Lexus had was relatively low output NA engines and all the carryover tech and low cost parts sourced from Toyota.

Reliability isn't magic, it's about experience and dedication- there is absolutely no way Toyota introduces an entirely new drivetrain and it's more-reliable than one that BMW et al. have been refining for a decade. The plain fact is that these drivetrains are new- Toyota/Lexus is going to have reliability problems until they do some re-engineering. I really don't understand why people think that reliability (or quality) is something inherent to Japanese people- I'm married to one, they are not special, i promise you.

I’ve heard from someone with the naturally aspirated BMW having about 280K miles on it, manual 3, I think V6, and a friend with a 5 series manual, I think a V6 (late 90s), had about the same mileage before he bought a Tesla and sold the car. A person in my golf league has a 2005-2008ish I think V8 5 series, auto, over 180K miles. The late 90s BMW my buddy took to a lower cost BMW specialist business for maintenance and also did some things himself, the golf league guy knows cars a bit, and the other guy with the 3 knows cars to some degree. My uncle has had a fleet of BMWs building up for decades, he changes the oil on the cars and does some self maintenance. Never heard about major problems. I hear others with these cars though and a lot of complaints. Generally a Toyota or Honda is a good route if you don’t want to fuss with cars. I had a Pilot with 300K miles on it, ran exceptionally well, mostly just computer recommended oil change intervals.

Reliable cars are those that have old but proven technology. Here, a great example is Toyota/Lexus or Nissan, Mazda, Kia, Hyundai etc. You can't expect advanced cars like BMW or Audi to be just as reliable. You can't expect it from anyone anyway cars like Ferrari or Porsche etc. Some are aimed at people who pay attention to costs, and others at people who pay attention to above-average engine parameters and performance in corners. The target group of customers is different. Both groups are great but for different cleints. That's simple.

Many Lexus owner who switch to bmw is due to how dull Lexus are to drive. If reliability is the only benchmark Germans have no chance of sale, but they outsell Lexus globally. Most people who own these cars don’t own them 10 plus years. They want to feel that thrill of performance and Germans know that, those are choices they have made. 3 series has lost some of its thrill because they went more close to nice ride and reliability got CR badge but lost enthusiasts as well. My buddy has 07 3 series close to 200k miles water pump replaced after 100k miles basis maintenance. I owned 3 series till 100k miles with no issues. Never any issues with many leased bmws and Audis. .....Sad you Never mention how Sooooo very many who get a Repair burdened and LOSS configured in depreciation owners of beemers SWITCH BACK to LEXUS or simply remain dumb by Leasing and dumping beemers every 2 years.just like cedes owners.

Majority of luxury cars are leased very few people buy them new, there is huge market of used buyers also, it is choice there is no dumbness on both choices, some see value buying new some old whatever based on their financial condition and other priorities in life. If one choose a car to push it to limits then it comes with constant repairs and more maintenance it is conscious choice by car maker and buyer both, Lexus is great value for many but not others.

I had the 2002 E39 540i that I drove till it hit 308k miles then moved on to the E60, a 2010 535i that I kept till 316k. Then I bought a 2017 435i and I drove that for 300k before moving on to a 2020 M550i. In all of these cars, I didn’t have any major problems other than window regulators on the E39, the water pump on the E60 and the turbocharger actuator on my 440i. The part was like $300.

When you quote Consumer Reports as a reliable source, I lose all interest. They're a pay to play just like JD "awards" you keep hearing about on car advertising. It's all bull.

Nothing wrong at all with BMW, been driving few models for a while now, fit , finish and drive makes a big difference compare to Lexus, it's the ultimate driving machine after all that a regular people can still afford. Keep up the good work and bringing all honest reviews.

exactly, and most of these people spewing crap about BMW reliability have never owned one.. I own 4 and have zero problems. Any vehicle will become "unreliable" if you don't keep up with the required maintenance at the required intervals.

Survey published on carscoops....about most reliable cars. 7 out of ten, Toyota and Lexus, first 6 places all Toyota models, not one European car mentioned. We have over 100 cars in our businessfleet, all brands. Toyota/Lexus is by far the best car around, and by far, I mean by far.....

This video is missinformation central.. 🤦‍♂️.. the giant recall Toyota did on their new v6 is NOT because they "unreliable" but because the NC plant they were produced screwed it up and built it with defects. (All affected engines were replaced for free!) This same engine built in Japan has 0 problems. As for other new engines, as you said: "remains to be seen" - which means there are NO major issues as of right now. So, what exactly are you complaining about then? 🤷‍♂️

If what you’re saying is true, then why they are also recalling Lexus lx 600 which should be built in Japan? Things are not adding up I’m not sure if this is plant specific or it’s just the new engine that needed better production.

Perhaps the close cooperation between Toyota and BMW gives the Bavarians a greater advantage. They are also working together on completely new technology for a new and completely different generation of engines (it suppouse to be an alternative to hydrogene and electrics, which was announced not so long ago).
