Climate control is always present on the touch screen. It requires no more "button" presses than if there was a physical button. Plus I generally just say "hey bmw, adjust temperature to xx" and I never have to touch anything.

The same body but it’s easily recognizable by the quad exhaust. I live in Miami, and I’ve seen the IS500 only a handful of times. There are tons of IS 300s here though. Even IS350 is not that common. So, the IS500 is a very rare bird indeed.

Give me the is500….in my opinion this version of the IS has to be one of the best looking sedans on the market. The interior of Lexus feel superior in quality to me, even if it lacks the tech (the only tech I care about are heated and cooled seats, back up camera and apple CarPlay, maybe automatic wipers) the rest feels gimmicky. The is500 has a much better sounding exhaust note and it’s no slouch performance wise…. I guess if you 0:15 only have the means for one car I see why you’d want the m340i. Essentially it has more to offer over a wide range of options. But if I just want a fun sedan and I can own a legit sports car on the side… give me the is500 everyday of the week.

Awesome comparison! I have an IS 500 and was considering going to an M340i before I pulled the trigger on the Lexus, but after a year with it, I'm still in love. I feel that the M340i is the better car for most people, on paper, but I felt like it was almost too obvious of a choice if that makes sense. Besides, the return of the V-8 to the Lexus IS was too hype to pass up. As you stated, it is just a fun car, and while outdated, it's certainly interesting compared to an M340i.

BMW doesn't "down play" the power figures, it's about how car is setup through out the power and torque band. BMW has always been tuned to give you the quickest and the best results. I believe this explains why their engines either blow or require a lot of maintenance.

I went from an ‘08 Acura TL Type S (which I owned for 11 years) right into a ‘23 IS500 (which I’ve owned for a year so far) and tbh it doesn’t feel *that* old to me. I tend to keep my cars 8+ years so the maintenance for the M340i would just be painful over the long term. And Idk that the IS350 feels the same to drive as the 500 especially in the upper ranges, but I found that once you really wake it up, it’s a lot more responsive as long as the RPM stays above 4k. What a lot of people don’t seem to realize is that everything about the IS500 is adaptive and situational since it’s not a full blown sports sedan like the M3 or an ISF and what I mean is for example: 3 things happen at the same time when the speedometer breaks past 40 mph no matter what mode you’re in: 1) The steering wheel feels heavier. (Feels much heavier in Sport S+) 2) the suspension firms up 3) the transmission feels a little more responsive (not by much but still noticeable). The faster you go the more the car firms up and the more it tries to keep itself awake before going back to being low key and “lazy”. When you really push down the kick down pedal from a dig, it feels like it goes “Oh. Oh? it’s time to race?? Ok!” but I think it’s because the CPU is set up for street driving by default, and it takes it a minute for it to feel more responsive for the rest of the driving session after you’ve “primed” it up as long you don’t turn the car off. Hope this helps.

I thought all of the same things when I got my IS.... Just traded my 65K mile IS350 FS for a Audi S4.. At 65K miles it needed a new differential, driver seatbelt assembly, and of all things it developed a wiring issues that threw every code and killed the throttle pedal of the car leaving me a sitting duck in traffic. Never had any issues like that with my Previous Audis. The dealer could not solve the issue, no one wanted to work on it; And they did not want to cover anything under the still active warranty. I really liked my IS, it felt old school and had a very underrated chassis. But after driving my S4 for a month, it really was a car stuck in 2006 besides the ascetics. A regular current gen regular A4 would wipe the floor with a 350 performance wise; I remember when the 3rd gen IS came out, that was reversed; the IS was almost as fast as the then B8 S4 stock. But they never updated the powertrain.

Looks wise, the Lexus wins easily. The AWD of the BMW makes it practical for those who live in snowy climates, but the RWD and N/A V8 of the IS500 makes it worth the con of no AWD. As well as that sweet Lexus reliability.

I used to be a Lexus Fanboy too and owned a 3IS. I was so excited to hear a “new” IS was coming out so I could upgrade… then when it hit the market I loved the exterior but then I saw the interior and realized it was the same old ass car from 2014. I was distraught. Then I read everywhere that BMW reliability had come up tremendously. That they had taken notes during their partnership with Toyota to build the Supra and implemented Toyota style processes during manufacturing leading to them now being on too with reliability. Even outperforming Lexus this past year. So I bought a 3 series and couldn’t be happier. I do wish the IS was fully updated throughout and not just the exterior bc man that car is sexy. It really makes a statement on the road.

I’m making over 500 hp on my IS500. I personally think the new BMW’s sound like crap. Mix of a popcorn machine and lawn mower. The performance is undeniable. But in reality who’s really tracking their car…. barely anyone. Another thing to consider is rarity, everyone has a bmw nowadays. The IS500 is rare. It’s a head turner. Also everyone can hate on the interior but the thing is that the fit and finish is perfection. And I personally love all the buttons instead of some big ass screen. If bmw still made their v8 m3’s I probably would’ve picked that over my 500 but I just can’t deal with their v6’s. They sound awful.

NA V8 sounds great but after a while you start to want more. The torque isn't as instant as the I6 and it's not a daily driver for the northeast. The fanboys clearly have not watched savagegeese or driven an is500 hard. A big reason to not go Lexus is the lack of tuning and aftermarket support. The Lexus forms is a bunch of purity guys that question why you even changed out the oe wheels and the rest gatekeep all the performance mods they did that make real power. Even tuning a 2017+ IS is gatekept. Also gone are the days of a car that you can keep for some magical 30 years cause even Lexus is creating lemons with their turbo V6. After driving a 340i with just a downpipe and tune I knew Lexus was not even sitting at the same table. Saying that you will overpay for a fossil of a car for reliability at this point is pointless. I rather pay for a car I can use and enjoy what I spent than to start questioning my decisions and start car shopping again. If you want a car that lasts you, go buy an economy car and drive it light. No performance car is going to go without expensive repairs, you beat on it so you will pay to play. The cost of ownership on a Lexus and BMW are within spitting distance at this point so pick what makes you happy and not what others tell you to buy.

You'll have the odd issue here and there on the bmw but you're not seeing a large delta between them if you shopped for a service plan for 4 years. If you think spending an extra 1k or 2k is too much then you're not looking for a sports car. You're looking for a GT which is the IS500 and similar cars. The saying goes you have to pay to play and no performance car comes cheap if it's reliable enough. Look at the cost of ownership of a 718 or a 911, they are even more than a BMW and require more expertise to work on.

@KarlBrosef very true. The driver ultimately determines what breaks. If you look at the cars that went 300k+ more than likely it wasn't beaten on, no aggressive throttle input, no mods, a lot of highway miles, and the biggest is actually fixing the car instead of turning up the music whenever something sounds funny. That's why you'll hear people dog bmw, audi, and Mercedes but you won't hear much on Porsche. Porsche owners are more apt to spend the money to fix it and from what I've seen drive their cars normally except the occasional track usage. If you drive a car like you stole it everyday the heat cycles will breakdown even metal overtime. But that's where people have to find what kind of driver they are and accept if they will have to open up their wallet or you tone it down cause you can't afford it. I personally know I can't drive an automatic without being able to control what gear I am driving in. Not even paddle shifters will do it because after a while it will auto upshift. I know I drive with a lead foot so a manual car or sports cars with the manual mode will keep me away from jail. If I want to wring it out I drop some gears and pass. That's why I personally know a NA car won't be satisfying cause I'm already wringing the piss out of my k20 engine and it's getting a bit old. I might not sell it but I definitely want a breath of fresh air.

Such a great review! I'm looking for my next car and I want a V8 for sure just for the experience before they go away. My two choices are the M550i and the lexus IS500. I could go with RC F as well but I have 2 kids and although we have a good'ol mini van for family occasions. I would like to have them in the V8 to hopefully get them to love cars just like I do. I'm torn between the IS500 and the m550i bc they both have a bit of what I want: m550i is faster, has AWD (I live in the mid-west so we have winter lol), much more modern infotainment; the is500 is a NA V8 rather than the TT V8 in the BMW so it sounds much nicer in my opinion, it is a smaller car than the m550i but it is a Japanese made car (my personal preference since I'm asian and watched initial D growing up so I only drove Japanese cars since my first car). I'm not one that cares about reliability bc I believe in that how the owner treats the car determines the reliability of the car. Shit's gonna happen in life but usually if you don't treat your car like an ass, your car will last. I'm leaning toward the lexus right now just for that sound and the love I have for japanese cars. I will go test drive each one for sure but your video made me more excited about both cars.

Great video! To be honest I was never a BMW fan until they brought up the B58. That engine is like no other right now on the market, you can easily tune it and get tons of extra HP while retaining reliability; it has amazing fuel economy despite great performance; smooth powerband and tons of aftermarket mods. Shit even BMW realized how good the B58 is making them look and made a S58-68 variants which takes all the good things the B58 has to the next level. M340i is the sedan benchmark on the market right now, sad to say the segment is dying to boring SUVs which kills the interests of other brands creating something that can really go head-to-head against the M340i. Lexus however did something really lazy here. Yes, the V8 is a jewel engine but that's it. IS500 felt it was made to put V8 leftovers in a IS350 shell. The transmission is antique and is holding the performance immensely, feels like it was an unfinished project and was scrapped after now going full electric soon which would be a big mistake. Hybrid is the way to go.

If you want to buy, get the IS 500, if you want to lease, get the M340i... Beware that the IS 500 might go up in value because NA V8's are going away.

Test drove the IS500 and M340i. M340i was real quick but clinical in nature. I didn't find it had much emotion, even though it did everything perfectly (other than the overly firm ride) The IS500 made all the right noises, the V8 is a huge draw and that Lexus reliability! The gauges are cool and it's a long term keeper. However, it felt lethergic in normal driving, when not in Sport Plus and only comes in RWD (Canadian winters). Anyways, both cars in Canada are 80K plus. However, I didn't buy either of them...as good as they are. The car I bought has AWD and in Sport Plus shifts to 100% RWD with drift mode. Variable exhaust and plenty of power with a turbo six. Chassis dynamics are wonderful and it has a beatutiful interior and sexy exterior... More emotion than the M340i and a comforatbale daily driver with AWD that the IS500 can't offer. Lots of tech, concierge service during it's 5 year warranty and 20K less than both of these cars.. G70 3.3T Sport.... Either way, we are fortunate to have such amazing choices, no matter which one you bought!

@@SlipAngleG70 can't go wrong with a G70. I daily my IS500 in Ontario in the winter too on Michelin Alpin PA4. Handles like a beast even on the snow with the help of the LSD.

I actually drove a G70 for the first time recently. It was a 2.5T though. The engine was the most "meh" part of the car, but everything else was great. I like the steering, the interior layout, the comfort, everything. With the V-6 it would be a sweet package. Though, would I ever trade my 2023 IS 500 for one? Probably not.

@ARentz07 The 4cyl isn't great.. similar to an IS350. Try the 3.3T next time. It's got so much torque. Throw on a tune and the car is really quick. However, I'm sure if I had an IS500 I wouldn't be giving it up either. Sweet car man!

Depends on your goals for the car. If you're out here trying to race, yeah, don't go IS 500. If you want to just drive the car as-is and don't care about clout, then get the IS 500. It is going to be smoother to drive and more reliable.

The B58 makes great power but long term reliability is questionable IMO. BMW decided to use a very complex cooling system with a majority of parts made from plastic. Think about many heat cycles and you could imagine how brittle the plastic could be.
