@@YoPhocFays Even the NA GDI engines are a problem waiting to happen. An engine needs to be at least partially port-injected for cleaning additives in top-tier fuel to hit everything they need to in order to keep carbon sludge from happening in various parts of the engine.

Every vehicle that is sold with a TURBO (New or Used) should come with documentation stating that the vehicle MUST idle before shutting it off. Most consumers don’t understand how Turbocharged engines work 😢

the turbos really only need time to spool down and cool if you've been running it hard and fast. under "normal" driving conditions it may not be so crucial but still a good idea. most people don't have the patience nor time to sit there for two min.😂

I used to have a 1990 Nissan Skyline 2.5 Turbo. In those days we had 'turbo timers' which would let the car idle for a few minutes after you parked it to let the turbo cool down.

Its a fact. 3% more efficient, 80% less reliable. All car manufacturers are forced this way. The net greenness is much worse because you dispose of a car after 100k km now.

This will be the result as people around the world 'reject EV monsters' and hesitantly except that 'extra electrical' Hybrid engine. Simple was always best/ these contraptions will never last the time/ or the wallet factor. Buy old tech. before it is all gone. My old Dodge Caravan 3.2 engine just passed 300,000 km this week and still doesn't burn more than a pint every three months. Runs like a charm/ idles perfectly/heavy on in-town gasoline though. Highway fine. Original water pump. Cheap parts if required. My backup is a Toyota Corolla Cross which seldom gets driven. When one sees high-time engine oil on the shelf and 125,000 km. on the front of the jug, you know when are screwed. High time was always 250,000 & up in the good old days and good v8/v6 engines.

Extremely disappointed with vehicles from cars and pick ups to semis. Every engine we choke off with emissions equipment and complex forced induction ends up losing reliability and only minor fuel economy gains. There was a point back when minimal emissions equipment with a little mechanical and electronic tuning got acceptable power, reliability and fuel economy that worked, but that wasn't good enough for the environmentalist lobby.

Have owned many non-turbo Toyotas and HOndas. Your point is correct. The engineers at Toyota will fix the burbs with the turbos, but my main concern is longevity which is a hallmark of Toyotas. While many hopeful people might vouch for turbos, I just retired from an organization that rebuilt turbos. Turbos like superchargers have a limited lifespan. Some might last up to 150k miles before replacement, given the owner's proper maintenance (change that oil frequently) and operation (slow starts and shutdowns). However, knowing what I know about limited turbo longevity, many auto mfgs are relying on future sales and at the same time meeting increased emission requirements. To be honest, I would not purchase a turbo vehicle if I planned to keep it beyond 150k, period. Despite Toyota's reputation for building reliable vehicles, turbos will remain their challenge.

Turbo chargers in diesels last many hundreds of thousands of miles under much higher PSI loads. I'm not worried about the turbo itself in a gas engine, I'm worried about the engine internals holding up to the stress of the higher power / heavy loads. The 2 turbos in my BMW diesel are pushing around 50PSI (pushed to the absolute max with tuning) and they are healthy at 160k miles.

I have had two Ford Explorers. The first one was naturally aspirated V6 engine. It ran for over 200,000 miles and then I crashed it. It never broke down. I then got another Explorer it is a 2018. The same thing no turbos and front wheel drive and a V6 engine. This time only one problem, the horn stopped working. It was covered under warranty. It is also running like a champ. We just got a Ford Escape last year we have over 10,000 miles on it already. They sell a 3 cylinder turbo. I said no way. I got the 4 cylinder Atkins hybrid. I like it. It gets good gas mileage and has been reliable so far. Thoughts?

Simply do your home work!....& get the VERY most Reliable LEXUS brand. LEXUS does indeed make NON Turbo configurations TODAY! They have used additional Electric motors to obtain power boost Not Turbos on the best models. Result is: More Power, More Options ( use Gas or Electric ) and run "Naturally Aspirated" ICE I own the current model Lexus 450h+ " F " Sport albeit w/ lots of Carbon Fiber, Trunk Lip spoiler and Rear Wing.....Red Calipers and all Carbon Fiber interior.....the platform is IMO, the very best ever created ! In general However, you are correct Lexus is going with some turbos to accommodate emissions. Let's hope they simply add bigger Electrc motors to gain bpower...heck they already have the formula in their GREAT Hybrid model 450h+ "F" Sport.

That's subjective. I see more 300k+ GX, LX, 4Runner, Sequoia, and Land Cruisers than I do Lexus 400h/450h models. I also see a ton of them in the Middle East/Africa where the paved roads end. Plus you don't have to deal with the complex maintenance of the hybrid system. I used to own and drive a 2013 Lexus 450h, which is no longer competitive with the latest 2020+ variant. It was a great commuter but limited utility. I still own a GX and a LX. I (subjective view) believe the very best model Toyota/Lexus offer in North America was the Land Cruiser 200/LX570. Yes it was thirsty but it just does everything well (not just limited to on road highway/daily commute/track but also haul people, cargo, and tow) and in comfort (on and off road). For a 6000# + vehicle, it gets a respective 16-17mpg on the highway even modded with 33"+ tires. I can't say the same for the Lexus 450h+. To me the RX has a lot of in city, daily commute, handling, and massive fuel economy advantages, but missing a lot of the utility/hauling/towing/payload, off-road/adventure pieces. Plus the interior of the LX has way better material than the RX, even down to the speakers, the reference sound system, and the split tailgate. Navigation on all these suck but can be easily retrofitted with aftermarket Carplay/Android Auto units for less than $1k.

I want an LX. I’ll probably end up getting an 2017/2018 just because of the cost. Even an 17/18 LX, depending on the miles, can cost more than a lot of new cars. From the sound of it I’m better off getting the V8.

It's why we were so comfortable buying UX with a non-turbo ICE. lt's not fast, but speed is not what we chase in a CUV. We plan to turn 250k miles, and based on our previous two Lexi and our diligent maintenance, that should be no challenge. .

This why I got the 2024 ES350 because of the tried and true NA V6. I am not a fan of the small turbos manufacturers are putting in their cars. I have a friend with a 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe and she is already having problems with her new ride. Too much tech and complex engines are making cars not as long lasting.

Yeah, you can still get a traditional v6 on the ES and take the wait and see how things get worked out over time with the new engines. I also like that the ES still uses buttons in addition to touchscreen very well implemented. The ES is currently my favorite Lexus and you can get them below MSRP. I wish the RX was my favorite but without the v6 I will pass on the new RX.

I have a 2022 LS and I've had no problems with 43k miles. You can trust Lexus. The majority of those engines are trouble-free. He's referring to a youtuber who made a video outlining how a mechanic saw a few cars with an issue. Ask a mechanic yourself if that engine is problematic. Majority of them will say no.

Dropped the NA Glorious V6 in 2023 I believe...replaced w/ 4 cyl Turbo...(although they still have the Non Turbo 4 cyls......2 issues IMO...they tend to make Noise / growl when pushed and possible& Typical, Euro car non reliability from heat / spool-up.

Sorry but their 3.4L twin-turbo V6 has been a disaster ever since it launched in the LS500. Failures left and right and in many cases with less than 20,000 miles. The BMW B58 is more reflective of what you'd expect of a Toyota turbo. Also, Hyundai may make atrocious 4-cylinder engines, but the 3.3/3.5T V6 in their Genesis models is top notch when it comes to reliability for a turbo engine. Toyota should stick to what they excel at, making fantastic NA V6 & V8 engines.

@@philhenderson3516 well I can't argue as I have only owned na Toyota engines. What I will say though is everyone said the same thing about CVTs and I have never had an issue with Toyota eCVTs. I also heard the same thing about Toyota hybrid systems not lasting long and having huge repair bills and I've had great success with those too so I'll take my chances with Toyota. Also I do Uber so my use case for these is pretty extreme.

"Audi and their oil burning technology" lol As an Audi owner can add that you pick the wrong model and wrong year, mostly basic 2.0 engines had this problem. They have fixed oil burning issues in 2018, so 2019 years models are good to go without carrying oil jug in your trunk. My 3.2 VR6 did not burnt any oil, only rubber. In defence of Lexus can say, just get yourself a hybrid powertrain, bulletproof and tested by millions of taxi drivers around the globe. Also, I got one last year, talking from experience lol

Yes indeed the 2.0 is an oil eater for sure and the 6 and 8 cylinder engines are better. The 5 cyl units in the RS3 or TTRS are also much better

Most automakers are shooting themselves & their customers in the foot with these timebomb GDI turbo engines & engines with start/stop & cylinder-deactivation. Plus, when we moved from port injection to direct injection in-general we created less reliable, more problematic engines in terms of carbon sludge buildup that can't be properly avoided with the cleaning additives in top tier fuels. A few automakers went the combo direct + port injection engine route instead of 100% pure GDI with some of their offerings, but all of them should be doing it.

You are so right. Toyota does look a little deeper and tries to build reliability into their drivetrains but time will tell on these newer 2.4 and 3.4 L engines

ICE engine commuter car days are numbered. In order to compete in horsepower with EVs you either need a gigantic V8 or a overstressed 4 or 6 cylinder gas engine ready to detonate at any time. You just can;t compete with ICE technology (30-35% Effieciency) with EV tech (92% efficiency) EVs are clearly the future and are getting less expensive year after year. ICE engine cars are just getting more and more expensive year after year.

Nowadays, you pretty much have to go with all electric if you want a reliable new car. The batteries on those newer EVs are good for at least 20 years.

I told you before I’m quitting buying Newer 22s and 23s and 24s Toyota and Lexus because they’re endless money pits and breaking down with turbos and V6s Twin Turbos, electrical failures with mild hybrid motors on tundras and sequoia and poor quality interior and expensive to maintain and expensive to buy. And didn’t y’all listen to me 🙂🤝

Cute and I love the interior finishing. Nice functional utilitarian SUV. There have been a few reported engine failures with low miles so I would dig deeper into commonalities. Otherwise a nice unit.

You nailed it. Somewhat insidious to go to all turbo powerplants which will manifest more 'profit for Lexus' because turbo engines fail more predictably out of warranty when Lexus doesn't have to pay for their less reliable designs and part replacement will be on the consumer's dime. Lexus management is banking on throwaway America not be daunted by higher failure rate out warranty as they want consumers to buy another Lexus when their old Lexus goes out of warranty and not hold on to their vehicles a long time as V6 Lexus's would go 300K miles. Short term this won't haunt Toyota. In fact, Toyota is only stealing a page from both BMW and MB which are known for much less reliable designs. Will see if this business model works out for Toyota/Lexus. There is much more. Profit is why hybrids exist. In summary, the consumer is pitifully dumb about automobiles. Used to be, people cared about how long vehicles would last. Statistically, the more complex a vehicle is, the more they will fail and higher cost to repair.

You totally nailed it. People in general are dim. I know people still buying Hyundais and Kia’s even with all the brutal press on blown engines. Toyota and Lexus seems to be in fact taking a page from BMWs book and likely heading down that path. It’s now not as obvious which brands stand out for reliability and rather which ones are less of a problem.

@@ECPP I wonder about the dimness of people. To me, its a neon sign as an automotive engineer. Maybe its general affluence, but not the whole equation because so many are in debt. I am old and remember people understanding basic things. Keep speaking truth to educate the masses who for some reason lack common sense. Love your channel. God speed. PS. speaking of insidious, the 'excuse' of needing to go small displacement turbo and hybrid to meet CAFE and emissions is also a large misconception. Car makers are complicit in what emissions and CAFE they sign up to. Reason is, government legislatures are completely clueless about 'what level of emissions and CAFE' is achieveable with a given powerplant technology. In summary, automakers are complicit and sign up to more stringent regulations because 'they can derive more profit' on more complex vehicles to meet these standards that happen to fail sooner which also suits their business model of profit. This is never discussed in public discourse but the reality I know to be true as an industry insider.

Turbos last about 60,000 miles. Then start choking or blow up. Especially if you drive a lot of mountains and tow. Towing keeps turbo on a lot. Huge stress on the engine. Crap and more crap, dual turbo double crap.
