Leylah’s run was quite incredible, an 18 yr old, recently turned 19, defeated 4 former/current top 5 players. The likes of Osaka, Kerber, Svitolina and Sabalenka. She also took out Kanepi and Konjuh, who are not bad at all. They have been top 30 before. Her run was super impressive, doing it back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Incredible! The long rally before the tie-break really worked to Fernandez as you could see Svitolina heaving at the end of it. But nonetheless, a couple of "go for it" points was the difference in the tie-break and Fernandez reaped the rewards for attacking and gaining points to get to the finish first.

Watching Leylah Fernandez somehow reminds me of Manny Pacquiao. She is not afraid to mix it up, so that her games are very exciting. I can't resist comparing Emma Raducanu to Floyd Mayweather Jr, who is masterful in hitting hard, but is equally masterful in limiting the opponent's ability to hit back. Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu have given the world an exciting rivalry (fierce but embracing rivals) that just makes Women's Tennis so exciting. I bet everybody can't wait to see their next game. Again, I can't resist seeing that Emma Raducanu, like Floyd, is just so savvy on maximizing her potentials in the finance game, while Leylah Fernandez is all about resiliency in the fight. Like Floyd, Emma had lost zero sets in the US Open, but Leylah had to fight for survival each time against bigger and stronger opponents.

Once again I caution against calling this a rivalry already. It is way to early to be calling it a rivalry. Then surprisingly only met once in juniors as well. All you radacanu enthusiasts must not know the game very well. She will be studied, her game will be broken down by coaches and she will run up against opponents who will test her. She’s young a talented no doubt, but comparing either of them to established boxing legends is frankly insulting to the rest of the field.

It is both of their first appearances in the final. Let’s not get to hasty about ever seeing either of them in a final again. Fans have this tendency to completely disregard all of the other talent in the game when these runs happen. You remember Iga? She never dropped a set taking the French open championship last year. Everybody was going goo goo ga ga for her and predicted her winning the next 16 tournaments. Has she? No, not even a minor tournament. Want to know why? Coaches study the tapes of her play and develop strategies to beat her. Same will now happen to Emma. Leylah has been studied more then Emma already and her game is actually more solid as a result regardless of her losing to Emma. Trust me, Emma is going to run into much stiffer competition going forward.
@murakisadao3 жыл бұрын
@@strawpaladin213 Agree. "Maybe in future" I said, not inmediately. Both players were magnificent. I'm sure this is only the beginning to many more victories. That said, a critical observation noted & that is Leylah needs to exhibit a bit more humility in defeat & graciousness in victory. The Fernandez family's behavior was tasteless & unbecoming toward Ms. Raducanu. There's confidence and then there's offensive swag. A few sports announcers referenced this issue too.
