When I was a kid our family tried our best to keep BL afloat. We had 2 x Minis, 2 x Allegros (one was a VP allegro 1500), 1 x Princess 2200HLS, 1 x Dolomite 1500HL and 3 x Rover SD1's. Highlights were: The mini's were the most fun, the VP allegro had a 5 speed box and leather, the Princess had a magic carpet ride, the comfiest seats ever, a lovely smooth engine and was massive inside, the Dolomite was rorty and sporty looking, and the SD1's were futuristic but filled up with water every time it rained. Actually they all did except the Dolly. They all rusted like crazy, leaked oil and other fluids everywhere but were all generally reliable and we drove all over Europe in the Princess and SD1's. None of them really let us down. And I loved them all. Today's cars are boring in comparison :)

Totally agree.We had minis, Austin 1100/ 1300 GT, Maxi and aspired to the Princess. The hydrolastic cars were great, the minis were uncomfortable but you know that they had other talents.

My dad had 3 of these , he loved em because they were so different to most cars of the era , simple to maintain and mostly reliable with a smooth ride , the only thing was the rust , the sills and wheel arches rotted away , i remember a maroon 1800 , a biscuit 1800 and a brown vanden plas 2.2 that my dad cherished , happy days

Some of the comments here from armchair experts are comical. Shitty brakes? It had 4 pots so far from shitty. The styling still looks good and was ahead of its time. 3 things against it was initial build quality, lack of a hatchback and the confused branding that settled for a very old fashioned name 'Princess' on a futuristic car. It should have stuck with the development working name Diablo.
@lewis725 жыл бұрын
Yes, the re-branding exercise half way through this vehicle's production was a joke. As if consumers didn't have enough BL brands to contend with; Austin, Morris, Rover, Triumph, Jaguar, they launched Princess. Vanden Plas was both a brand and a model spec. (Vanden Plas 1500 or Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas), so I'm surprsied that we never got a Vanden Plas Vanden Plas. Furthermore, why use both Wolesley and Vanden Plas as high-end model specs ? I think Riley got used as well at some point. Dreadful video !

Agree re brakes-back in the day ,try finding a princess in tge scrap yard that still had its brakes!They'd all been stripped off as a cheap brake upgrade for Ford Escorts,and I should know 'cos it took ages in the mid 80's to do just that.
@tripsadelica4 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. BL's problems were manifold...principally poor build quality from a crappy and fractious workforce with a long arm for taking pay rises but a history of doing sweet f-all when it came to actual work. The other nonsensical thing which any efficiency expert would have picked from the outset was their maniacal adherence to having so many brands with badge engineering...thereby treating the British motoring public like idiots and increasing their advertising and tooling costs. What they should have done was stuck with the most recognisable brand (probably Austin or Morris) and retired the others. They should have gone with the SOHC engines from the start and actually performed more quality auditing to find those rust spots and fix that leaky boot! In all honesty I reckon the car looks great for that time period and I wish they'd exported it here to Australia. Leyland in Australia, sadly, was already in its death throes. Not so much because of industrial strife but poor build quality because cars were released too quickly without adequate field testing (the Leyland P76 comes to mind...wonderful car with a great set of engines let down by crappy ancillary parts quality). In all honesty had Leyland employed industrial relations experts to see what the Germans were doing with employee relations...had they tightened up their assembly lines to increase quality, reduced the brand and model lines and dumped those awful pushrod engines which were relics of 1947 then the company might still be going today. So bloody sad, really. Even when Holden and Ford died in Australia it was not because of quality issues but because the companies did not read the market properly and did not go over to the SUV fad fast enough...also their American masters were very tight with development funds.

I had a 1975 brown 2200HLS, which replaced our Mk 1 maxi, the only thing was it wasn't a hatchback, but our four children could fit in with plenty of room, and they only had a four speed box which was a shame , but we all loved this car .No Rust at all ever . Had it four years 👍👍

When you look at what the competition was doing for similar sized cars BL were no different. Power steering wasn't fitted to four cylinder cars because Ford didn't fit it to four cylinder Granada's, yet the all Princess models should have been fitted with it, not just six cylinder models. It did need a five speed gearbox but BL just couldn't afford to develop a new one and they thought the Maxi gearbox was not good enough.

While the 1970s were an awful time for British industry for reasons known only too well, some of the cars that were created during that time surely deserved a better fate than they got. This is one of them. It's a remarkable styling and design exercise. It should't work, but it does. In spite of its hatchback-like basic lines, it comes off looking quite upscale. It's elegant, distinctive, rather handsome and has nice proportions and a good stance. The Wolseley interior trim is delicious with its acres of cozy, cuddly, rich-to-the-touch vulgalour. When it was conceived it was expected that the Rep car market would size up again in the mid ups as it had done in 71, while each successive Cortina got bigger, its was an increase in quantity rather than quality. The objective with the Princess was a reliable car, of average performance with good comfort to appeal to fleet managers who wanted a more modern alternative to the Cortina. However the fuel crisis stopped the fleet market sizing up and so the Princess was left too big and expensive for the Rep car market, but as you noted lacking the trimmings to cut with the Granada. After that lack of cash as BL went from crisis to crisis and what money they had went on the SD1 development and new factory alomg with TR7 and SD1 warranty claims so there was no money to fix it.

Problem with the Princess was that the market never happened for it. When it was conceived in the early 70s, they had just been put on the back foot when Ford sized the fleet car up with the Cortina mk3 leaving their offer the Marina pitched between the Escort and Cortina. So the Princess was conceived as a 1800 reskin to be sold as an Austin for the fleet market in the mid ups when they expected Ford to move the market up half size again. It would sell alongside a new mid sized rwd Morris that would replace the Marina. Being aimed at the fleet market, performance was secondary, focus was on comfort and quantity over quality, that is why despite its modern styling it lacks details like integrated bumpers, wrap around lights, moulded door cards that were starting to appear on cars at the time. It also explains why they retained a 4 speed gear box and accepted such marginal performance. However the the 74 fuel crisis and economic crisis happened and so the fleet market did not size up, the market centre of gravity did not move to 1800 until over a decade later, ironically when Austin were having to cover the market with the 1600 Montego. This meant the Princess was caught in the market between the Cortina and Granada, too big and expensive to be a rep car and too slow and soft (note they did not offer a rev counter) to appeal as a management car.

@RoadCone411 I figured I'd be the only one who recognized that music. I'll admit that it made me laugh a lot in this context.

My dad bought a new 1978 2.2 HL. It was not great tbh. He traded it in 2 yrs later for a Rover Sdi.

I never felt in complete control of the Princess, the guy throwing one around the bends in the clip had some balls. I preferred the Morris 1800 (Special Tuning version did well in rally's)

It's a shame the fuel crisis pretty much did for the P76 (and that more people didn't buy them, of course) quite a handsome looking car,especially the coupe

It turned into quite a nice car when it became the Ambassador which was a hatchback. Who on earth agreed to those back lights ? They looked ridiculous . A friend of mine had one of these and after 3 years it had a hole in the floor !!

@eggy19624 жыл бұрын
1800 cc B series. 2200 cc 6 cylinder, then later models had 1700 cc and 2000cc O series ( shit oil drinkers).
