Yes, it is a 2 cycle opposed piston engine. You can hear the scavenger (blower) when the engine is revved up. Fairbanks-Morse has a series of 38D5-1/4 and 38D8-1/8 engines. Many power plants use the 12 cylinder version of the engine for power generation. Engine is rated 1600Hp @ 720 RPM and the turbo boosted engine is rated 2880 HP@ 720RPM.

My grandfather scrapped loads of WWII stuff and I can remember a brand new complete one of these sitting on a pallet. My father tried to give it to a local musuem, but they already had loads of stuff so sadly about 15 years ago it went for scrap. I always wondered what it would have sounded like.

I love the old engines, and I do know how most work. There are usually two crankshafts, and no head. I have seen one that had a single crankshaft that had two pistons per cylinder, but it was a sterling engine. I would imagine that there's an internal combustion version of that type as well... After all, they figured out how to make an entire engine spin while the crankshaft is stationary over a century ago.

The Germans used an engine similar to this during the 30's in their Junkers Ju86 aircraft. It was a Jumo 205. 6 cylinder ,12 piston ,2 stroke with a centrifugal super charger and direct injection. It performed well but apparently was unreliable under high load conditions.

Developed well before the war for transatlantic mailplane operations, Napier in England built them under license for airship use this experience lead to the mighty deltic for admiralty use and Napier then provided technical assistance to Leyland through Rolls Royce for the design of this engine so it's a junkers descendant.

A good engine but slightly under powered for the Chieftain MBT. A lack of vibration damping caused to many ancillary oil & fuel leaks!! Had many happy hours working on this piece of kit
@theworldaccordingto4555

I helped design and used to make these monsters! Along with designing and producing other MOD kit. A great engine in it's day and for me the later 750bhp engines were really the only adequate engines for the weight of the Main Battle Tank of the era (IMHO). You live and learn, eh! But still that tank was one of the best in it's day. I think the multifuel design was a great idea, because in battle or advancing through a country you may not always have the fuel at hand if the engine is single fuel only. (obviously). I think it was a NATO requirement at the time to be multifuel. A good idea imo. It's funny you mentioning vibration and fuel (or oil) leaks because my old Triumph Bonneville[s] and old BSA were the bloody same. Lots of vibration through the frame to the foot pedals, causing you feet to go numb on a long(ish) ride. Worked on so many old Truimphs trying to solve problems with them. With the Triumph it was a an initial case of the head & engine (overall) not being good enough for the amount of compression that engine piston produced, they were literally trying to blow the inadequate head off! They'd leak from everywhere if you was unlucky. But a great looking bike with lots of kudos if you had one back in the day, late 1960's - 70's. (Those were the days, eh! Hahahaha! When you had to stop for oil as much as fuel). The Norton Commando was a better bike at the time, in the 1970's. Much more a cafe racer of the day and an 850 engine to boot, and handled better (but for me the Triumph had the looks) I had both (a sucker for punishment!). People always said to me, "I know it's you before I can even see ya!" But to be honest, Give me a modern bike any day, (but it is hard not to let nostalgia stick it's nose in ;-) A good friend has just got a Triumph Rocket 3 (now that is a f'kin' machine!). 2.5 litre! 0-60 0n 2.7 seconds! And it looks and sound like the effin bizniz! (unfortunately I ain't fit enough for that game now, but given half a chance... ;-) If you ever want to know what it was like riding those old bikes, then listen to the song that conjures up what it's was like (and about) being on a bike back then (Ton Up!), then listen to, 'Vincent Black Lightening 1952' by Richard Thompson. (It tells the story...acoustic version is my fave, you'll find it on KZbin). I even had the long red haired girl in black leather sat on the back! Much to the despair of her parents! (but that's as far as it went for me, as far as the song goes).

@@theworldaccordingto4555 My limited experience w/Norton was one of learning. But just looking at the Lucas upgrade compared to most but maybe a few of the BSAs, told me a story of superior build... The issues of poor quality control were easily corrected, if vested. The sweet part of the Brit bikes was parts availability...if you weren't too impatient to search and await. 'Fair spares' is the key phrase, as many of the pieces just needed that internet availability we take for granted... Oh, a USNOA/INOA membership was very valuable as well.....👍

@Tremolux59 Two stroke diesels are not "super Charged". These are "scavenging blowers" . They will not run without them. EMD uses one Rootsblower on each bank of cylinders. Any "boost" at all is very little. In the 1960's EMD started turbocharging their engines. The turbo provided scavenging air + boost. They were at low speeds gear driven until the boost caught up with the fuel input. Then the Turbo "Free Wheeled".

I've been around internal (and external) combustion engines my whole life (even have a college degree in it), and have never even heard of this type of engine until i came across your vid. That's how come people keep asking about it. That and people generally don't want to sift through the hundreds (on average) of comments to find an answer, when they can just ask.

Apparently, this engine has around 750hp not 850hp.... Apparently! Does sound really nice though! The opposing pistons are in a vertical arrangement, which seems odd to me as led down on its side would make much more sense saving on space in the tank? Usually, you would have a roots supercharger on a two stroke diesel. However, I couldn't see or hear it? Now a days though, everything has been sorted and we the Brits have the best tank in the world. The Challenger 2!....NICE!

@hoplite46 Yes, 2 pistons per cylinder. It's called an opposed piston engine. Google them and you will see how they work. 2 crankshafts. It's a 2 stroke with ports in the cylinder walls for intake and exhaust. One piston covers the intake ports, the other piston covers the exhaust ports. It's probably supercharged as well.

This is the twin crankshaft engine. This design was copied of of a WWII German aircraft engine called a Junkers 205. There is a crankshaft at the top and a crankshaft at the bottom, linked with gears. The engine is a two-stroke, and intake and exhaust work via ports in the cylinder. The idea is for full expansion of the gases before they leave the cylinder for maximum efficiency. This was done before turbochargers were practical.

Thermal efficiently of opposed piston engines tends to be quite good due to the shape of the combustion chamber. They also have fewer moving parts, so there is less to go wrong. This particular engine did have its quirks though. Fairbanks Morse opposed piston engines really showcase the advantages of opposed pistons. They are super reliable, very fuel efficient, and quick to accept full load. This is why they are frequently used as standby generators in nuclear power plants...and by the NAVY.

@@ipanzerschrecku4732 The L60 had problems with oil flow in the upper crankshaft bank due to the fact the oil pump was located much closer to the lower bank for space reasons and resulted in less than optimal oil circulation, causing detrimental wear and tear on anything in the upper crankshaft. That was just a limitation of the time, if not engineer incompetence. It would have been a great engine for 40 ton vehicles.

@Skullmonkey456 Reply from 1966 Leyland graduates: We had a reunion in June and I bought a small book on the Chieftain tank by Simon Dunstan dated 2003. One of my colleagues was put on L.60 assembly at Leyland Spurrier Works in 1967. The rating in the original brochure was 700 bhp but it went out at 585 bhp due to piston overheating. Gradually through development the rating was increased and finished at 850 bhp. The L.60 was based on the German Junkers JUMO205 diesel aero-engine flown in 1932.

Junkers jumo aircraft used opposed cylinder diesels in WWII, Napier made triangle opposed piston engines with three crankshafts, used in trains - engine was called a Napier Deltic. Theres heaps of examples, old technology but bloody neat. Old Commer vans had them too (3 cyl)

It's the same configuration as the Fairbanks-Morse diesels and is based, I believe, on a design for an aircraft diesel by Junkers from before WW2 and used in the Ju86 bomber. Like the above mentioned design, they use a supercharger for moving air into and then out of the cylinder and piston ports to control the timing.

Two sets of six pistons and con-rods opposed to create, in effect, two six-cylinder two-stroke diesel engines geared together without cylinder heads. The combustion space between the cavities of closing pistons leads to high-temperature combustion for multi-fuel applications. N.B. also the Coventry Climax H series and Rolls-Royce K series engines.
