[Edited - thanks youtube for just... not saving the title and description...] Another USB repair today as they seem to come in waves! I left a lot of waffle in this video so I hope it's interesting!

(2:57) I was terrified (livido = intensely pale) when I saw you manipulate the copper-colored flex cable (I prayed that you would not damage it) and I mean it since it is a Harman Kardon device and I am a fan of the quality of their products ... Excellent repair, thank you very much for sharing. Greetings.

You missed one step there after soldering - preventative maintenance in form for of liberal amounts of hot glue to hold that USB port in place. ;-)

Are you trying to save money on flux? Flux is your friend, remember that. Also you should be tinning the tip of your iron EVERYTIME it goes in your holder. Pro tip............
@Adamant_IT4 жыл бұрын
The amount of flux I use is plenty! I needed it at the start... which is why I then added some. If you're expecting a Milli-Paul of flux then you need to head over to Louis Rossman ;) As for tinning, you'll notice from the tap-tap that I am cleaning my tip after each use. It's a knife-edge tip, only the very edge is shiny.
@davidbates21614 жыл бұрын
@@Adamant_IT I saw you were struggleing to flow that joint so it was just a tip. Using more flux is messy I know but works wonders. Louis is a bit ridiculous.... Just that i have been doing this for 30 years and thought it would help. Also tinning your tip would keep it clean and ready.......
@mariolemerise77324 жыл бұрын
@@Adamant_IT I agree with David on this one. More flux will help produce a good solder flow specifically when you put the solder directly on the iron tip, the flux integrated to your solder will then go in smoke so you need flux on the work area to compensate.

Satnav's were never designed to run off the internal battery. They are normally connected to the cigarette socket of the car. The battery (which is normally kept charged by the cigarette socket) is just to allow trip planning before starting the car. I have a tom tom and a navman here and they are both 5V dc 1A usb mini. The devices aren't supplied with a wall adapter, just a accessory socket adapter as they are designed to be used in... a car. No way would tom tom put 9v dc on a usb socket. that would just be asking to be sued by angry customers who try to plug a cellphone or other device apart from the tom tom into the adapter!
@Adamant_IT3 жыл бұрын
They certainly used to do this. I might be wrong for modern models, and they may have changed the practise a while back. These days we have more sophisticated PD standards - but certainly 10 years ago there were SatNav car adaptors that ran 9v into the USB port.

Hello Adam, what is your opinion on the Dremel Versatip, is this good for beginner soldering or a regular plug in 30watt solder iron? I have some experience from 1996/1997 and thats it, when i was in my teens :) now im like you i need to work on my thin pcboard for a harddrive usb 3 port which is "dry" Really annoying how these manufacturer get away with poor quality , bloody hell Im in no hurry but i have got some thin solder and flux paste , sadly the store has no wick .... so i need to get wick i am guessing...i attempted to heat the joints up on the usb3 connector, but sadly i created a bridge between 2 joints of the 5 on the pc board. Its also pretty small so its difficult to see. In the meantime i had regassed my versatip which i have never used as yet, got the solder wire and some "eagle" flux paste....

Never tried a butane soldering iron myself, my main concern is not being temp controlled. With electronics, it's always nice to know what temp you're running at, so you can avoid cooking the board, or know when you're not hot enough. That being said, I'm sure some practise and getting to know it would solve that. You get used to an iron and start to know by feel when you're too hot/cold, etc...

I have used epoxy and hot glue on micro usb b connectors when the mounting pins have broken off. Do you have a strong feeling or recommendation about if those add strength to charging usb?
@Adamant_IT3 жыл бұрын
Hot glue isn't a strong fixative. It's good for an interference fit (ala, it can't move if every millimetre of space around it is flooded with hot glue) but I wouldn't expect it to hold up against strain. Epoxy probably does the job, but may be messy, and you only get one shot at it. I try to solder if I can, because it's a strong repair, and can be re-repaired if it doesn't take.

@@Adamant_IT Superglue with bi-carb to build material works wonders. I've used it at work to secure a laptop dc port after the surrounding plastic had failed. Extremely strong also, bodged a van door handle with it when it broke in the Oz outback (lasted until I got to a wreckers). Only downside is if a repair needs to be done in that area in future.

Great at last some one else that complains about the modern USB connectors. I find certainly that micro USB and even USB C to be not up to the rough handling of constant use..
@Adamant_IT4 жыл бұрын
It does seem to fall down to connector quality as well... There are some USB micro devices that seem to be fine after years of use, but others are notorious for failing within a year. Depends vastly on the use case too. Can't remember if I said it in the video, but a sat nav like this is going to get rough treatment getting plugged and unplugged every time it's pull out the glove box. Designers should've known this and reinforced the USB connector to the hilt.

@@wahabfiles6260 The joint is only as strong as the pad itself, adding more solder to a damaged pad accomplishes absolutely nothing.
