This zep tune has a good backstory: in 1968, Jimmy Page in the famous Yardbirds was looking for a new vocalist to replace the one who just quit. The whole band fell apart when Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck decided to go solo leaving rhythm guitarist Jimmy Page alone to fulfill the rest of the Yardbirds record label contract. He was really interested in approaching Procal Harem’s singer but got a random tip to look into an unknown 19 year old playing in the basement/pub circuit to make rent money in the countryside far from London’s music scene. Sitting in the back of dingy pub Page sat there anonymously to watch 18year old Robert Plant sing. He was immediately blown away by the force, dynamics, and timbre of Plants voice not to mention his stage presence. Page invited Plant over to his place to talk about music. That night, one of the songs they listened to together and did a little improv session was “Babe I’m gonna leave you” by folk singer Anne Bredon. That night, Page asked Plant to get in a studio with him to see if they really had good musical chemistry. Plant said “of course…as long as you don’t mind me inviting by good friend and drummer of our pub band to try out as well” Plant’s blue collar rural buddy was none other than John Bohnham.

This song was originally a folk song written and performed by Anne Bredon in the late 1950s. Joan Baez would cover the song and it's that version Jimmy Page heard and decided he wanted to re-work for Led Zeppelin. When Jimmy and Robert first met, it was one of the first songs Jimmy played for Robert and told him his idea on how he was going to change it.

This is from Led Zeppelin's first Album from the summer of 1969. That was an incredible year of music from all genres, but especially Rock music. I believe that this album, their first, is their greatest music. Raw, gritty, and very Bluesy, this is an iconic album in Rock history. One of those albums, where every song on it, is a winner. that is a very rare occurrence. Thanks friend

"Babe I'm gonna leave you" was a cover song from Led Zeppelin's first album recorded in 1968. It was originally written by a woman - Anne Bredon and made popular by female folk singer Joan Baez in the 60's. Both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were huge fans of Joan Baez, and they chose to re-arrange the song to make it their own. Page & Plant were into acoustic folk artists like Joni Mitchell, CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)... they recorded their 3rd album 'Led Zeppelin III' in 1970 as a mostly acoustic record.

JPJ is playing bass on this track. Jimmy did a couple overdubs with acoustic (spanish) guitar later. He would almost always layer overdubs on every track. JPJ always plays either bass, keys, or mandolin, for Zep.

I’ve been trying to nail down that acoustic run you hear at 5:55 of the video for years and can never get it anywhere near that clean. Especially steel string acoustic that one run is so clean and in the pocket What makes it fire is he uses a note outside the scale - the run is just an A minor scale run down but Page hits the Bb which is a semitone above A or the minor second and it sounds absolutely and positively dope

Thanks for you rreaction. This song is a masterpiece and still rocks 50 plus years on. I can remember when I first heard it and was blown away by their talent. A total sonic roller coaster as you pointed out. Definitely an exampleof where the whole is greater than the sum of each of their contributions. We know a lot about these bands I think just because we experienced them from the beginning and each of us picked up things we read or heard about and saw at concerts. Nice to see their songs can still bring joy and meaning which is a testiment to their musical genius and the universality of their music across the generations.

John Paul Jones is playing a laid back bass part, as well as a very subtle organ part. The organ is barely noticeable, but if it weren't there you'd notice the lack of "ambience".

Fun Fact - Now this may be more folk lore than historical fact, but I've read many times over the years, that when the band fist cam to the states, and wanted to shed their original name, The New Yardbirds, (Page was in original Yardbirds) they were backstage kicking around names with some other bands, after one suggestion, Keith Moon, drummer for The Who, said, "Yeah, that's gonna go over like a led zeppelin" Plant and Page immediately looked at each other and said Led Zeppelin!!" I'm sure I'll be corrected on details, but it's a great story.

This is a great rock version of a song I learned off the 1962 Joan Baez in Concert album, 7 years before Led Zeppelin did it. It was a great contemporary folk song that they made into an awesome rock song.

I’ve been a fan of LZ for over 45 years. They had an energy that was unmatched. Raw, brutal, delicate, and polished all at the same time. Check out Battle of Evermore for something of theirs that’s completely different.

Led Zeppelin is my all time favorite band of the 70’s. It was around 1974 and I was 12 when I first heard them and they blew my mind! I was like what! I’ll be 60 in March and if they got together again with Jason Bonham John’s so playing drums I would pay crazy money to go see them.
