When I was in high school in the 80s I had a friend who was a drummer in a band and he got into a car accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. The same guys who made Rick's set made a rig for my friend with a mouthpiece so when he would bite down it would hit the bass drum. It was really awesome dealing with those guys. My friend passed away about a month ago. RIP MARK

SO glad to be a Gen-Xer! We got the best of the music and culture of the late ‘70s thru the ‘90s-plus of course absorbing our parents’ generation’s music, of course. I was 13 when this album came out, 16 when I saw Pearl Jam live for the first time, touring for their ‘Ten’ album... I could go on forever listing what I-my generation-got to experience firsthand.

Rick Allen is also an artist in addition to being the band's drummer. After Steve Clark (RIP) died from alcohol poisoning and prescription drug overdose, the band wrote White Lightning which is a song about him. It is an awesome song. Like a lot of my personal favorite Def Leppard songs, it was not released commercially.

Def leppard are still around! I saw them last year in Seattle. They were awsome, ther was 40.000 people there, and the crowd was insane. I have never seen so many young people, especially teenagers without mommy or daddy, all rocking def leppard tshirts, and ones that were from there new 2022 album.there seems to be a whole new appreciation for this Era, they have legions of faithful fans. When they got inducted into the rock of fame in 2019, they got the biggest fan vote ever in the history of this honor since they used the fan vote as part of consideration. I wish you would react to them again since you did them last. Lot's of people would love this, and the suggestions are great. My favorite video is bringing on the heartbreak, 1987 denver colorado as part of the "in the round, in your face" I think then that it is about the rest of the band as you humorously said that it's all about rick only. I have never seen a better performance. It's half acoustic, half electric, which is a departure from the original all electric. Just stunning, I think you would love it!

Animal is the only Leppard song released after Rick's accident which had its full backing track recorded before the accident (two-armed Rick playing a regular drum kit). However, that was scrapped and they started the song over from scratch, so what you're hearing here is from a drum machine, like on the rest of Hysteria.

The album this track is taken from called Hysteria was around three years in the making partly down to Rick’s accident. But kudos to Rick and the band. How many bands outta 100 would have said “Rick, we love you, and it’s a shame about the arm”, 99 probably. Hysteria spawned 7 singles and had sold 20 MILLION+ including 12 MILLION IN USA ALONE! Pour Some Sugar On Me, Hysteria, Love Bites, Women and Rocket were singles too 😊🇬🇧🇺🇸🎸

I absolutely love Def Leppard! Been to their concert in Phoenix in 1988 or 89. What an amazing night for me and my friends! But I wouldn't say they were the definition of the 80s. They were late 80s and early 90s. When I think of 80s music I think of Michael Jackson, Madona, Janet Jackson, the Beastie Boys, Prince, AC/DC, etc.

So way back when. I had tickets to the “Hysteria” tour which was postponed due to the accident in which Rick lost his arm. The tickets were valid about a yr later when they resumed the concert at which time the stage was in the round and you could clearly see another drummer below stage catching the licks he couldn’t. Mind you this was a yr after his accident. He’s a badass and they’ll always be one of my faves!

Van, you keep doing what you do! Stick with the 70’s and 80’s and you will have more comments than you react too. I was born in ‘64 so I grew up in those times. There are so many more bands out there from that time frame you haven’t discovered yet. Keep going! I love listening to your posts every night.

I agree. I like that Rick Allen stayed with the group. He had every reason to feel sorry for himself, but he didn't. He just learned to adapt and overcome. Equally cool is that his bandmates didn't just kick him to the curb for another drummer,. Kinda like "you're still our mate/drummer until you no longer want to play with us. The position is still yours." I quit listening to this group with this record, but I always thought that the fact that they kept Rick on was pure class.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ❤️🔥🔥🔥 Thank you for another Def Leppard reaction! I’ve seen them four times in concert- all with one armed Rick, and just one with Steve Clark before he passed. Def Leppard had already put out three studio albums before Rick lost his arm, and they were SO popular even then. Their video for “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak” from their 2nd album was one of the first rock videos MTV played. Then Rick was in the accident in 1984, and I anxiously followed the news about how they tried to reattach his arm but it didn’t work. We thought that was the end of Def Leppard. Then one day, in 1987, I had VH1 playing and heard a new song that sounded strangely familiar. I ran to the tv and saw THIS video playing, Animal, and I had never been so happy to see them back with Rick. ❤️❤️❤️ Good memories! December 19, 1987, I saw them perform live for the first time. The show was “In The Round” with a round stage in the center of the coliseum, slowly rotating, so we could all watch Rick play. To this day, it was the best concert I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen hundreds in my old age. 🤣 To this day, when Rick is introduced at a show (yes, they are STILL touring), he gets the longest and loudest reaction. We ALL love Rick! ❤️❤️❤️🥁 Van, since you love drums so much- (and should get you some views), check out then 10 year old Nandi Bushell challenge Dave Grohl to a drum battle (drummer for Nirvana, lead singer for Foo Fighters). IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY! Then as a follow up, you should check out the video of her actually playing with the Foos a few weeks ago (but she’s now 11). That drum battle was the best thing to happen in 2020! 😀 Edited to add the link to Nandi’s challenge to a drum battle. YOU MUST WATCH THIS, even if you don’t react to it! If it doesn’t make you smile, and warm your heart, YOU AREN’T HUMAN!! 🤣 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4PZeXxuqcyrbqM
