Front engine dragster chassis I built based on an original 60’s dragster that was too deteriorated to race. The body, suspension, and steering are all from the original car.
This car is owned by Terry Denomme and Kevin Roberts of Canadian Hot Rods Magazine and the build is featured in the Aug/Sept 2021 issue

I’ve owned a slingshot since ‘88. I ran it on alcohol with a 440 Chrysler and had to swap all controls as I’m a lefty. It’s been hanging from the attic rafters in my garage for the last 30 years because it’s the scariest thing I’ve ever driven.

I've dreamed of having one of these since I was 15. I'm 49 now and still haven't had one. I guess it's time to move on

Why not build one? You’re only 49, not 89.

I've thought for a long time that with vintage cars becoming rare and too valuable to turn into race cars that it would be cool if people started building vintage style front engine dragsters powered by normally asperated and carbureted musclecar era engines running on gasoline. And then, of course, there could be other classes😉 I just dig the heck out of the old slingshots🙂

That's mad! So your legs go over the axle and diff? And your literally inches away from the tyres! Great job on the fabrication it's awesome.

I once saw an old NHRA video (70’s era?) that describes these dragsters as “Freakish machines built from a lust of speed and power.” That being said, anything to make it lower, stronger, and lighter is the way to go… even it it means putting a differential in between your legs 😂

Nice work on the dragster chassis guys, i think you might have read the rule book wrong. 1 3/4 tubing not required unless the helmet bar is higher than 18 inches from the shoulder bar . could have built it out of 1 1/2 tube then step it down to 1 1/4 at the motor plate , but nice job anyway thanks for great video...

As far as the roll cage goes. 18" less 5 or 6 point is 1.5" OD. Above 18" it's 1.675" OD and must be 6 point. This is for 2.6A spec per SFI. CM wall .065 wall mild steel .118 min.

I've always been curious about those torsion bar front suspensions on those cars. Were they repurposed from something else, or how are the internals built? Is it a solid bar all the way through that front tube; locked in the center somehow? Great work, looks really cool.

I salvaged this one from the original chassis, but I’m not sure what it’s originally out of. It’s different than a Volkswagen set up. It has two square bars (one for each side) that go completely across the front tube. The right side locks in to the left side of the tube, and is adjustable on a splined shaft. And the left side of the suspension locks in to the right side of the tube. By adjusting the splined shafts you can raise or lower the front several inches.
