what would the right compression would be? i seen one post a guy got 95, top and bottom, another guy says 88 is perfect. honestly i'm just looking to have my 1952 idle at its very lowest speed, just creeping along to troll a minnow, not looking for top end speed. what would be acceptable when i do a compression test do you think?

According to my go-to Small Engine Doctor on YT, donyboy73, you want at least 90# or better to be a good runner. Cheers!

No, if yours is missing, it's ok as these motors don't run hard enough to kick water up and hurt anything.

Leo Gallant i have a jw17 johnśon 3hp just like yours mine also looks gr8,maybe you can answer my question if you would please Im use to bigger engines the jw17 idles down unbelievably could you please tell me in your opinion if a 10' jon boat with 2 adults weighing 360lbs plus all required safety equipment should run faster than 4mph all ignition parts new coils,points,plugs ,water pump feels like good compression when you pull rope an starts gr8 thanks
