This is so cool. I've seen probably 90% of these programs and it blows my mind to see just how much we've endured for us to just now be taking a stand against it?

+David Parkes Your words are as important as all of ours. If what you say about straights being "enemy number one" is true, then that makes its even more effective. Because you, an "enemy" realizes just how brutal the world can be to the LGBT community and how we deserve better. Sure, the only people treating us bad are straights, but you are not one of them. It doesn't take being part of the opressed to know that all people should be equal.

I just can't stop crying. I'm not in LGBT community, but as a human being with soul and morals, this kicks me. No one shouldn't go this through, when reality sucks, books and movies, TV, shows, music should be the place to escape. To keep the hopes and dreams alive, but this is so not the case. I personally feel sorry, if it hurts me, I cannot imagine how it hurts you, :(. All changes start with small steps, I believe we can change the world, and the best would be to start erasing all these clichés and let the young ones get their role models, the fuel for the change ... One day, when I will see back to all my actiions, I want to tell, I did everything to make this Earth a better place for all the people. I'm with all of you, :(.

I can't even begin to describe how chocked up I got when I watched this the first time. It is SO TRUE that LGBT characters deserve better. You've incorporated so many shows/movies that follow this trope of killing off characters and/or denying them a happy ending but they only begin to scratch the surface. Many of the shows featured are American and if you were able to do every country you'd wind up with an hour long video of character after character being shafted. It's just not good enough and we do deserve better. When I was a teenager there were 1 book I could find in the library with a lesbian character. She fell in love with a straight girl and was rejected and told she needed counselling. When it came to tv the only show I could find myself in was Home and Away, and that relationship ended when Charlie cheated and slept with a guy. Charlie then went on to date more guys until she was eventually killed off. The first movie I recall was Loving Annabelle, the characters were denied their happy ending there too. It's NOT good enough and things NEED to change.

Damn this fucking hit me like a ton of bricks!!! I've been desperately trying to explain to my mom and sister why this fucking shit matters and they say "yeah, but it's just a fictional character!" And this is video just showed exactly what I've been trying to tell them! I wanna show them this so bad, but I think they still won't get it... I'm just so happy that there are others out there who get it!! So thank you!!

+Rachell McCarthy I tried to explain to my dad and he said the exact same thing, that it's fiction and just to get over it. And I just get so angry because in my mind it can't be that hard to understand this. But apparently it is. That's why vids like this and people speaking up needs to happen. We have to be heard first and hopefully understood by some.

i've been getting a lot of questions about what the shows/films are, so here's a list in order of appearance: the 100, the fosters, couplish, call the midwife, the way he looks, coronation street, xena warrior princess, los hombres de paco, faking it, skins, lost & delirious, lost girl, gl** (i don't want to say the show cause it's easily copyrighted), boys don't cry, blue is the warmest color, person of interest, buffy the vampire slayer, the l word, freeheld, orphan black, pretty little liars, life is strange, carol, tierra de lobos, true blood, orange is the new black, chicago fire, arrow, degrassi, the oc, carmilla, but i'm a cheerleader, féminin/féminin, gzsz, imagine me and you, adventure time & legend of korra

I don't quite know about the others but "Boys don't cry" was actually inspired by a real life story, and I do think it's not fair to place it here, specially when it was always meant to be that way and the death of the character wasn't used as a method to deepen the story.

+Jane Doe I see your point but the problem is that those are the only movies that get made. They only made the movie simply because he dies and it's tragic. No one would make a story about a queer person who is simply being happy because media needs us to be martyrs.
@hazingblur7615
@hazingblur7615 8 жыл бұрын
This video made me fucking cry as a queer person with a homophobic mother I pretty know how frustrating it is to feel rejected by society and tv. Television nowadays has a really strong voice and it shouod be used to spread a no-hate message to young people. instead, it is used to show how lgbt people get killed in almost every series or movie they appear in. Its time to change this once and for all. LGBT FANS DESERVE BETTER, in fact, society diserves better and television can help not only at a national level, but at an INTERNATIONAL one. American shows are broadcasted all over the world and most of them have huge fandoms in almost every country, and if the industry was smart enough they would take advantage of this and use it to normalise what being queer actually means. I personally think that The 100 was doing a great job with this. They didnt even know what discrimination was! they were just people fighting for survival and the rest meant nothing. That clearly was because they had more important things to be worried about other than if someone was gay or lesbian or whatever. However, and inspite of all the love that was being showed, and the popularity the show had gained throughout the second season, mostly because of the introduction of Lexa, the strong fierce smart gay leader to the show, they decided to kill off this character, disapointing thousands of fans who were sweared that she would be fine and proving, once again, that queer characters are being used on tv just to gain audience and ratings. Fortunately, not everybody took it in a good way and the LGBT FANS DESERVE BETTER movement was created. We have been given the chance to make ourselves be heard and we must use it. Show everybody in the tv industry that lgbt people matter and that queerbaiting must end. This isnt a joke that we're talking about, this is serious, and if we don't change anything the next generation will grow up surrounded by hate towards lgbt people and what today are tv shows tomorrow might be a reality, and this is taking a HUGE step back. Don't let the movement die now. LGBT fans deserve better. We deserve better.

There are some happy endings: DEBS, Imagine Me & You (even Hec gets a happy ending), and Rome and Juliet (considering it's namesake, you would expect it to end in tragedy, but, thank God, it doesn't. There is also the epic 14-year graphic novel series, Strangers in Paradise, which has a happy ending for Katchoo & Francine. Spashley (Spencer & Ashley) also had a happy ending!

Wow , this touched me. You know, I'm not gay, I'm hetero. Because of that I can't imagine how y'all must feel and to be honest I don't want to. I'm just shocked that now, 2016, people are still treated like that. A lot of people look up to these characters and then some stupid writers kill them off, only because they are "not good for the story" or they want to make them hetero to be with one of the hetero mains. This is so wrong.

I never realized how many shows there actually were where queer characters did not get a happy ending. Watching this video made me remember all those moments and scenes again and I say to myself "oh yeah, he /she dies in that show too" It happens so often that it becomes normal. I'm not queer myself but watching this video and reading the comments made me realize even more that you guys are angry and tired. I will support your guys' fight and pray that someday you will be heard, because you're right. It isn't fair.

I tried to explain this concept to my friend, who is bi like me, and she didn't understand - "but everyone dies on tv!!", she said. Really? I'm going to use the 100 just for reference here - Jasper is speared in the chest, Finn is shot with an arrow and then poisoned, Lincoln is saved from near-fatal withdrawal symptoms. But Lexa gets shot and immediately dies? (bad writing imo, but that's not the point) The point is, yes, people die in TV a lot. Straight people die on TV a lot. But straight people also get more happy endings. So when one of about 3 or 4 queer characters on a TV show dies, it sends a message: that first, we are a minority, and secondly, that we're not important. Our happiness isn't as important as the shock value of killing someone off. That's the thing - LGBT+ people don't see themselves represented on TV as much as straight people. So when you take away a valuable part of that representation, it really hurts. So before you say "yes but straight people die all the time too!", please think about this. Straight people are represented everywhere. We - the LGBT+ community - are not. So I hope the makers of shows & movies where the gays don't die know how eternally happy I am that they exist - Legend of Korra, Carmilla, Carol, amongst others. Thank you.

As someone who's sat through lessons today where straight, cis girls have asked, "why can't I call weird, gay?" This has been heartbreaking and eye opening to watch, we are the plot-propellors, the disposable tissues and it sucks. Hopefully our generation will bring an element of equality and beauty that the media industry lacks today.

(I'm a little confused why "Carol" is included in the montage tho - as both book and film famously defied the tropes and cliches and gives us a happy/hopeful ending. ) But this is very touching - and so frustrating that it's still an issue after all this time and all our "progress". Thank God, at least Midwife walked back from the trope - I was furious watching that bike accident play out, telegraphed from a mile away that it was coming. I couldn't believe it - I was all "et tu, fucking Midwife"... Good luck on this movement. I love the attention it's getting. Things have to change.

ok, I really feel that, a lot of those deaths were hard for me, but: why did you put in carol (it's a contemporary film and no one dies, the ending is sort of open, but it made me walk out of the theater with the hugest fucking smile on my face), person of interest (they could have easily killed off shaw because of sarah shahi's pregnancy, but they let her live and so far this show treats us good, with queer POC representation) and even carmilla (danny might have died but she's not gone, and everyone is queer, but not one of them has actually, permanently, died yet, they all come back ;) ) ?

Hell I'm 32 and lesbian and still look up to lesbian couples in movies, shows, web series, books, etc. I'm not afraid to say that I'm completely obsessed with the web series Carmilla! I ship Hollstein and LaFerry respectively! There just comes a time when creators of these characters need to think about every community! Thankfully there's still hope for Hollstein to get back together in season 3 but all the other ships that sank deserved to sail too!

I do honestly believe that it's not only the LGBT characters that die. If you look at any show then the most loved couple are always split up. Always. And it just so happens that the shows most of us watch have the LGBT characters in it that we all become attached to. Amazing video, so many wonderful couples there. They showed me what love is. this summed up exactly how I felt as a kid watching (secretly) every queer couple I wished to be like someday die or suffer or break up in some meaningless way. it got me down because it was like the film industry depicted only failure and heartbreak in the lgbt community in its tv show/movie endings. i craved that fairytale happy ending we see with straight couples all the time. at least ONCE. i wanted to love a film piece without having to be content with merely one gal/guy out of the couple surviving or being happy. i just hope that we'll get more in the future with better luck, care and attention from the makers.

Anyone with a Twitter account should share this video and get it trending...Unless for purely personal therapeutic reasons, Art in all its forms always has a social responsibility, and those producing, writing, directing and acting for the screen should know that by now. Your audience, ALL of your audience, matter.

Yo on some real shit I haven't seen most of the shows in this video and I'm gay myself but what pisses me off the most about killing off LGBT characters when your show looks like it's being progressive but it falls into a damn trope is just wrong. I stopped watching Degrassi when they killed Adam off their FIRST TRANSGENDER CHARACTER and they kill him off in the worst shitty ass type of storyline way ever. This dude had a damn IPHONE for fuck sakes I'm pretty damn sure it has Siri on it use it. Also wasn't the dude in the woods where the fuck is the other car going? The 100 looked like it was gunna do something different but then they killed off Lexa. Stopped watching the show after that too. I tried to support other actors but I just can't After the many shows I've watched that killed of LGBT I just....can't I'm crying at all of this. I hope that one day I get to be showrunner and give the fans what they want. If they can't hear us might as well fix it your damn self.

+Ashley Kimaru I've read this a few times: "The 100 looked like it was gonne be different." - Why? When I watch the 100 I see a show that makes their characters suffer all the time. And it doesn't matter if they are gay or straight, black or white. Characters suffer and characters die. So why did you believe that anyone was safe? Especially considering we knew before season 3 started that Alycia was in Fear the Walking Dead and they talked in advance about the difficulties of juggling both shows and how hard it was to get her back. We knew all of that, we even knew the 100 only had her for 7 episodes. So why are you people surprised that she got killed? Most of us knew this would happen. PS: I think it's sad that you don't care about anyone else on that show, beside Lexa.

Black Walker It's the way the show portrayed the ship Clexa. They were making it seem like they were doing something different. In The 100 sexuality doesn't matter. It's just part of you. If the showrunners knew that they weren't going to keep Alyica why would they give her such a big role, and I'm not talking about being the Commander. They made her the first out character on the show. It's like they don't do research on touchy subjects. When you have a gay character of any sorts whether they're gay, bisexual, trans, lesbian etc. that they should've looked into things that happened in other shows. Again I haven't seen most of the shows in this video but just knowing that as a community that in media we don't get a happy ending is very disheartening. If Lexa wasn't going to be around they way push the sail of Clexa with everything she had done for Clarke leading up to her death. 1. Save her from the Ice Queen 2. Ask Clarke to let Sky People be part of Thirteen's Clans. 3. Go to her room after killing the Ice Queen for no reason. 4. Send an army to protect Arkadia 5. Swearing fealty to Clarke. 6. Choosing NOT to start a war after Pike and the others killed the army. 7. Changed her people's motto for YEARS knowing that her people wouldn't like. 8. Let her finally have a little bit of happiness she could have wanted by having sex with Clarke to only die seconds later. That's why I thought it was being different. They were pushing it like they were telling us that yes we know Clexa is a popular ship and we're going to give you what you want. Clexa will be cannoned don't worry.....Oh wait sorry not sorry we just killed the little representation you had. You're a fucking showrunner for fuck sakes he must've known the trope it has been so widely accepted in media to kill off LGBT and queer bait us. That's why I thought it was gunna be different. If no one is save in The 100 why hasn't the other characters died yet? There has been many times Clarke should've died, Bellamy, Octavia....hell Raven should've died when Mount Weather was exploded she can barely walk! And she somehow manages to get out with that fucked up leg of her to try to go back for the place to explode. Jasper can get stabbed in the CHEST survive for days. But Lexa get's show in the stomach with a bullet and dies. So far the only show I've ever seen that gave us a happy ending was South of Nowhere. That's the only show I personally can remember where the lesbians get married and have a kid together. What that scene showed me was this: When you finally confess your love for someone it's not going to last. You will only be happy for that short amount of time. As a community we just want to see ourselves in a show. It's not fair that heterosexual couples can live happily ever after while the LGBT has to create a digital movement to show that we deserve better. I read a list not to long ago. 123 lesbian and bisexual female characters killed over the years. It's 2016! I'm tired of it too. Queer baiting will only hurt people. There are still people out there that find things in media to keep them going and when that's killed off they feel as if they don't have anything to live for. Jason should've done his research before killing off Lexa.

+Black Walker the 100 didnt just look like it would be different, the writers actively engaged with fans over sm and told them it would be different, telling them to have hope and trust them. and they promoted their show on the basis of that lgbt representation and that their show was breaking new ground i.e. not falling into harmful tropes. p.s. i think it's sad how i can't tell if you are just ignorant and completely lacking in empathy, introspection or awareness of anything outside of yourself, or just a troll.

Silenceisdistance I don't agree so I must be ignorent or a sociopath or just a troll. Nice deduction Sherlock. Ashley Kimaru Oh well, you are probably right. This is a conspiracy: JRoth just introduced LGBT characters and treated them like everybody else because he hates them and wants them all dead. He's probably planning on killing Clarke next by falling from the stairs and than Miller and Bryan by tripping over something - you know, silly deaths. Yep, you both must be on to something. Oh the crazy conspiracy against LGBT people. Damn them, damn them all. *I throw my fists into the air and fall on my knees, screaming in despare.* Thank you for opening my eyes. PS: that is how both of you and your little theories sound to me. LMAO. Have fun with this.

IM IN TEARS MEGAN OMG THIS WAS SO BEAUTIFUL! And of course I wholeheartedly agree with the message! Our stories need to be more than just death! As you probably know (I'm so sorry my tweets probably bombard your timeline haha) Lexa's death really affected me! It triggered my depression, I was having panic attacks and constantly felt sick! It hurts me that I pinned all my hopes on the representation in one show and when it came crashing down, so did I! One thing I'm happy about though, is this new found solidarity in the community we've found! I mean it was always there but we're finally all doing something to change things and I'm so fucking proud! The money raised for the Trevor Project is still rising and still astounds me! Seeing the trends on twitter EVERY DAY as we all fight for our voices to be heard and it's working! Journalists around the world are reporting all about it and taking our side for once :') And this video! Gaaaah! You summed it up so well and so powerfully that I wanna suffer through the pain just to watch it again

Hey, um, in the meantime, until everyone else catches up and stops killing us for their amusement, Let me recommend some good book publishers - Riptide Publishing (lets you filter for just happy endings and avoid potentially triggering content, will be opening a YA imprint here soon), Prizm books (The Mangoverse is a favorite and very female-centered, with lesbian lead who gets a happy ending every book with her girlfriend), and Harmony Ink Press (they're also quite good!). And the tumblr bisexual-books is a good place to find reviews first. And, the podcasts Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn't Dead by Night Vale Presents. And the movie D.E.B.S. And, um, That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Some of these tragic fates are simply inexcusable and unnecessaryl: Silvia of Pepa & Silvia, Lexa, Xena, Root, Marissa of All My Children, and Ana & Theresa from a Spanish soap. In the last 2 cases, the characters had originally been given happy endings, only to be murdered or die in a fire off camera after the show is picked up by another network or transitioned to a webseries! Talk about unnecessary deaths!

I too searched movies and tv shows with queer people to feel good and.... most of the time, i was super excited just to be so sad after it ended... because its not just the ship, usually its my favorite character too... the one i identify with... the one i look up to.... so yeah... this editing is amazing.

Here's a list of some lgbt movies with happy endings: -The way he looks. -Five dances (sort of happy, loved it anyway) -Boys (Jongens) -You should meet my son (😂) -North Sea Texas (not sure about this one) -Sommersturm -Eating Out (the gay American Pie) -A escondidas (idk if it's happy or not but it is a good one) -Shelter -Another Gay Movie Add yours!!

I don't think putting freeheld in adds anything to your argument, that's a film about real life events! But I totally agree with what you're saying, gay characters took up the majority of TV and film deaths last year, it's pretty sad. I understand that for TV and film they need dramatic story lines and couples don't stay together for a whole TV season but come on! I'm holding out hope for Alex and Maggie!
