That 3D Mario head was popular with the KZbin Poop community for a long while, along with the Mario Teaches Typing 2 and Mario Gallery (I think that's the name). Anyways, I remembered seeing this game at Elementary school and I remembered playing it.

I was 11 when this came out. I had relatively good typing at the time, but this really helped it even more. And Typing of the Dead expanded my skills later on. Kids today miss out on the fun of PCs being a new thing and having to learn to type back then. Now they just grow up with technology and probably can out type me by the age of 5.

5 year old comment, I know, but I remember hearing that the Mario head was featured at some gaming event in the 90s. Not sure what event or year, but they had Charles Martinet talking to people at the event in-character through the Mario head using facial tracking. Edit: Looked into it a little bit, it was first featured at the 1992 Summer Consumer Electronics Show. Also, from what I can gather they had multiple booths with multiple people doing Mario impressions. Hey LGR. Over the past month or so I've become a huge fan of yours. Lately, when I'm about ready to wind down and go to bed, I put on a playlist of your videos (which ends up keeping me awake for a few more hours) and the playlist ends up playing all night while I sleep...injecting classic games into my subconscious. lol. This took me back! I learned a lot from Mario Teaches Typing. In fact, I was the best typist in my class at school largely because of it. I really liked how you could be Mario, Luigi, or the Princess, which was also a point of strong appeal that Mario 2 had for me. It's true, you really had to sort of self-motivate with the game, but I think it really did help me to learn typing and improve my typing to a good, strong level. Wonderful to see this game getting looked at again. I never had the CD version, so the differences are really wild to see!

Cool, I had this game as a kid! I think it must have been the CD version because I recognize Mario's "airplane noises." I'm actually a fairly good typist now, even transcribing podcasts for a job, so it must've helped somewhat. But I remembered it being more fun than it looks.

That reminds me of these Japanese Typing Games, like Typing of the Dead. But in boring. Also, those normally don't really present themselves as educational (although the thought of a zombie-killing game sold as "edutainment" is nearly as funny as the concept of TOTD itself). That 3D Mario face... I think I saw it before, but I thought it was from Super Mario 64. Or a hacked version of SM64, at least, since it quite differs from the one in that game. The truth might be more horrible and makes me wonder whether any children got traumatized by this game, before they got simply bored by it.

I had the CD-ROM version as a kid. I still think of Mario singing “I ain’t got no body” sometimes. I also didn’t have a Nintendo console other than a GBO at the time, so that was nearly my first experience with Mario.

The original actor you mention - Ronald Rubin - must be the same guy who voiced Morph in X-Men The Animated Series and Artemis in the original Sailor Moon dub. It HAS to be - I can't think of another voice-over performer that is also named Ron Rubin. Saw him in a panel years ago. GREAT dude.

I bet a run n' jump typing game would be pretty fun. Display a word, phrase, or short sentence (depending on the level chosen) on the screen. Every time a correct letter is entered, the character jumps. When a word, phase, or sentence is finished, the character speeds up a little. If you mess up or bump into an obstacle, the word you have to spell is changed and the character slows down. Score is based on the time it takes to compleat a level.
