This device is EXTREMELY useful on games like "Jurassic Park" -- a typical play through is about 5 hours (assuming that you know where everything is) but the game has no save feature of any kind.

@@Garrette63 Indeed! Adding a battery save or password system, inventory screen to view your currently held items (keycards & stuff), better in-game pointers for the objectives, and ditching that super sluggish 3D first-person view for the indoor areas for the same isometric perspective as the outdoors (a la the NES game) would have improved the game a great deal.

The reason that the signal becomes a little bit fuzzy is simple: It uses a small amount of the console's power to power itself, and as a result it causes the amount of available power for the console to decease by a small margin. This allows the console to still function correctly but with the side effect of the video output chip only being able to function at most of it's capacity rather than all of it.
@ZipplyZane9 жыл бұрын
***** That's testable. Use two SNES adapters, and see if the problem goes away. Or run it on batteries.

***** I have the Game Saver+ myself and a couple of SNES. I haven't noticed any problem with signal degradation which should show up instantly on my scaler I use (XRGB-Mini) but I also use a regulated power supply rather than OEM which provides more amperage. One thing LGR didn't touch on with this device and is really awesome is it has built-in slow motion controls that aren't just "MASH PAUSE A BUNCH, SLOW GAME DOWN." It actually slows down the processing side without affecting the sound so you can do things like practice game-breaking bugs in Super Metroid i.e mock balling on a real system to get timing down.

That does not work the greatest for the yellowing shown here (resulting from the flame retardant used in the ABS plastic) and I would not recommend it. The only thing I've seen that reliably and safely reverses this type of yellowing is the solution known as Retr0bright.

All it does is let you play imported games without modifying your system. Basically, it's an adapter for the shape of the cart. It doesn't change anything about the game itself, so if the game's in Japanese it stays in Japanese.

My favorite accessory for the SNES, the Super UFO Pro, has this capability and also works as a flash cartridge / ROM dump device. Still, it is truly fascinating to know that this was a thing back in 1994 - that was well before emulators popularized save states. The Super UFO Pro's save state function is just as quirky as this one though, it's probably a hardware limitation on the SNES with all of its different co-processors.
@emmettturner94524 жыл бұрын
If you open up the Naki GameSaver+ it has Bung Enterprises chips inside. Bung mad the Professor SF/GameDoctor copier devices for SNES (Super UFO was another one). It's basically a fancy Bung backup unit with save states and slo-mo but without the actual backup functionality, since this thing was sold at Wal-Mart and had to be legal. ;)

this reason for the sound and intro issues are properly CPU interrupts which still exist after exchanging the ram and vram with saved state. it seems that they used an interrupt to replay the intro. and for music made like that back then interrupts have been a usually thing as well.

I realize that this video is old and that, odds are, no one cares about why those codes exist, but they actually serve the purpose of allowing the GSP to modify the game's RAM address offset. A lot of games will shuffle RAM addresses around when they are loaded in (there are numerous reasons for this, but that's a talk for another time). What you're inputting with the code as actually the hex address of a RAM value for each game that controls that shuffle. If the game is allowed to shuffle, the GPS won't know what values to track or, what's worse, where to assign them when you resume your game. So, say you're playing mario, and you've got 5 lives and 60 coins. If the game shuffles addresses when you reload you may have 60 lives and 5 coins (though in all honest you're likely to get a game crash as you have [bg_mountain_sprite] lives and [fireflower_shoot_sound] coins).

@DOSRetroGamer Жыл бұрын
Is this shuffling related to the lockout mechanism for third party games?
@nerdicorgi Жыл бұрын
@@DOSRetroGamer Not usually. Typically it's to ensure that that the code can run regardless of where in the pool of available RAM addresses the system begins to write, because not every system, execution cycle, or RAM vendor is going to start reading or writing from the same address. So it's far safer to write to the first available than force a specific address. These days address shuffling, offsets, and multi-point references are all frequently used as a means of deterring cheating on modern console and PC games both to protect the integrity of the game and to increase the likelihood of the game's internal error handler spotting the anomaly and safely crashing rather than risking damage to the system.

I'd point out the reason the music gets screwy is because the SNES has an entirely different processor for music, which has its own memory too. I once managed to transfer a DKC3 save to a friend's cart by saving a state right as I was choosing the in-game save option, then swapping the cart and loading state. It took several attempts. The game would always lock up almost immediately after restoring state, but we actually managed to get it saved.

It copies workram, not battery-backed SRAM. EEPROMs don't take any power to retain their state, but SNES games don't use EEPROM to save progress. Furthermore, this has nothing to do with what kind of save memory a game uses since it can save/restore any game even if it didn't have built-in saving. Real-time save-states are totally different. It's basically a RAM dump, like when a Windows PC goes into pure Hibernation (as opposed to sleep or hybrid sleep/hibernation).

Try put an AC adapter for each of the SNES and the GS+. The video issues might be related to an electrical problem

Actually the yellowing is caused by a reaction to light of the chemicals used for making the plastic. But I guess smoke and piss could do the same thing lol

The video quality loss might be caused by interference generated by the Game Saver.

i bet that its just overwiting the sram, while checking that the vram is more or less the same as it was before. no way its reseting the hardwarw setting the interrupts and reloading all the memories

There's no reason why it couldn't save the registers and program counter as well. I'm curious about what it does because if it did do that, what else could be making the loads so unreliable?
@laharl2k7 жыл бұрын
wanswers But are all registers from all the chips read/write? maybe some are write only. Also another thing is hardware state, some parts of the hardware arent readable, much less from the cartridge. I'm not sure about that last but if the hardware has some internal settings and stuff and you reload state while they are different, then that's the only thing that i can imagine could cause it to fail in such a manner. It would be much clearer if we could take a look inside that cartridge and see if there's another sram, a microprocessor or what, to have a better idea as to what it's actually doing.

As to the affect on video quality, my guess is that it's injecting some electrical noise onto the power supply line to the SNES. I've had some similar issues with a poor quality AC adapter.

The super game boy doesn't work with it because the super game boy is basically a game boy that replaces the screen and buttons with a cartridge connector. It has the gameboy cpu and ram on the cartridge.
