there are USB > 9 pin and PS/2 > 9 pin adapters available for the ST & Amiga but I think they have different codes/wiring to the PC.

The reason it doesn't work in the sunlight is because the infrared leds inside are being overloaded by the sun. Yes, ball mice have leds on the inside.

You were right on the money about the direct sunlight - the wheel/light sensor go haywire when light penetrates the thin plastic. I owned plenty of dirt-cheap mice back in the day, and most of them started acting "funny" in brightly lit conditions.

Having taken my old Logitech Pilot Mouse apart at some point I can tell you that the wheels that the ball turns have some sticks which block a beam of light. And the amount you move the mouse determines how fast the pointer will move across the screen. If you get direct sunlight into the mouse it will not register the light ever being blocked and it will not register movement. However on my Logitech mouse I got no such warning so I just found out by having my computer too close to a window in the summer :-)

It says it uses optical encoder to track the ball, so maybe direct sunlight would make the sensor in encoder simply blind, and thus not being able to track the ball. That's the closest I can guess. If you do want to get an answer why it won't work in direct sunlight, maybe this is the answer.

thats what im thinking. they typically use infrared leds for the trigger wheel, and sunlight is basically pure infrared so the pickup sensor would become blinded by the suns infrared light.
