It doesn't. It's one of the myths made to prevent people from masturbating because it's "unholy". If it was true then normal sex would cause blindness as well because your body has no way of knowing whether you're masturbating or actually having sex, there's no difference between these.

More info on these. There were several models, some included VGA support and I think it was 800x600 if I remember correctly. Those were on the high end. I worked for a VR company in the late 90's and early 2000's. We had several prototypes/demos of these from Sony and a few other makers such as Olympus. I know we were one of the very first US companies to get a "final" of these and it was not until very late 1999, so I can confirm that the US release was in 1999. We also had many of the "final" versions eventually, both of the Olympus and the Glasstron. They were WAY ahead of their time. All the versions I used included a flip-up shutter so that the glasses were translucent, and the company I was working for used them for Augmented Reality before it had that catchy name. The goal was to help repair large equipment on-site such as large earth moving equipment, generators, robot arms in factories, etc. I remember the VGA input right in the battery box. As these were still thousands of dollars cheaper than VR headsets at the time, we augmented them with some 6DOF accelerometers and made them interactive. The prototypes and more expensive models had little side "cups" or blinders to further immerse you. I do remember as some commenters have said a strap on most models, which we attached the 6DOF device to. Even the earliest pairs I remember having the cool blue color. Eye strain was and continues to be a problem with these. The last thing I remember is selling these on eBay for the company after all the dev work was completed. I had several people in the US Navy purchase them as they were compact and portable for the time, allowing a game system to be played without a TV. Just a cool Oddware item that has roots in the VR world. Thank you for sharing Clint! A great blast from the past!

"Let's play some Crash Mode" *crashes car right at the start of the race* Man, now _that's_ a perfectly named gameplay mode.
You can add head tracking by using any 3rd party head tracker (eg. TrackIR). The headset actually does stereoscopic (3D) viewing too! There are two individual LCDs just like the more expensive models. Sony just disabled the feature on the cheaper models. You can still see the effect in the settings menu when you configure the alignment - each LCD will have a separate image. Enabling it requires a hardware hack to the controller box. Some of the better Glasstron models also have either an LCD or flippable shutter to enable see-through mode for augmented reality. Biggest downside compared to modern VR is the minimal field-of-view. Sony was WAAAAAY ahead of their time with these. Sony's HMD development continued in several variations throughout the 2000's and even included a PlayStation2 version - the PUD-J5A!

They seemed to have improved it even more with the PlayStation VR2 headset. Though, it lost the ability for augmented reality, they have adjustable IPD with the displays literally glued to the back of the lens housing. So, it's not just a large screen in the middle of the headset that IPD adjustment screws up.

I remember around 94/95 my dentist had a pair like this that they hooked up to a vcr so you could watch stuff while they're working on your teeth. Was a great idea I thought, strangely haven't seen it anywhere since then.

I remember Pondering about these when I was younger. I always thought they were marketed as your own personal movie theater. I didn't even think to use games lol. I always thought it was touted more as a personal theater versus something VR because people weren't really talking about VR that much back then. And with Sony being a consumer electronics company - It seems the main use was to either watch movies or TV.

VR: Not JUST a pointless waste of lots of money; it ALSO retroactively makes cool old gadgets worse.

Vr has actual uses and can play a variety of great games impossible on other devices

You really got lucky finding this! I checked Ebay and at the time of posting this comment there are but two listings. One is a set of 2 and the other is a single unit. So currently there are 3 glasstrons on Ebay. Tons of battery packs though.

I really wanted one of these, back in the day! It's almost a shame for you to reveal what they're really like, Clint! Can't I just believe that they were awesome! Seriously though, great vid :-)

I wonder when the channel will get back to reviewing many of the good old DOS games you've amassed over the years. These days it seems to be all about oddware, techtales, building stuff, thrifting, and the sims. Basically all but reviewing the old DOS games. The reviews that are coming are newer games. The last older game which was reviewed was over 2 months ago, and a month before that to find another. Has the scope of this channel really permanently changed so much?

As Zabeus posted already, this channel has never been just about old DOS games. This has been a variety channel from day one. Go all the way back to when I started in 2006 and you'll see that I've covered a variety of random things from week to week, it all depends on what I'm into at the time. Heck, I didn't even start covering DOS games until this channel had been around for _three years._ That being said, there's already another DOS game video posted on Patreon, watchable right this moment. That video will go public in the coming weeks, and there are plenty more coming in the future as I see fit. If the state of things still really bothers you, you are free to go watch other things and come back when I have something more to your liking :)

I think Oddware is one of the more enjoyable LGR features. But I do agree, DOS games, classic PC games and weird unknown odd games definately add the most to the this channel.

Lazy Game Reviews So your answer is basically if you don't like it, fuck off? That's interesting. I've been here for a long time now, and yes the channel might have been a variety channel, but it's how you got big, no? I would think so anyway. Plus your old games are in every single episode of yours (or almost?). It's what you built your channel on. Or am I wrong, and everyone else but me just came for the sims? As for pinball, ok fair enough I missed that one while making my point, but looking back, it'll go back over 2 months where in the meantime there's everything but old game reviews. I just feel like the channel has taken a turn for the weird, where you put up videos of some duke nukem faceswap and other odd things. Maybe the majority likes that, and I'm just going against the grain, I don't know. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but I always thought the main focus of the channel was game reviews (as you have stated in a couple of very old Q&A's I remember watching). Ah well, I still enjoy some of the content, so I guess I'll stick around for now, and just continue not watching the stuff I don't really like. I just figured I'd take a shot and ask. No harm in that, right.

The design of that HMD is the 90's-est 90's thing that ever 90's'ed from the 90's. Great example of a 90's-ish impression of a "futuristic" aesthetic (well, back then, anyway - today they practically ooze with the era they came from :D) .

I remember using something similar to this from Olympus. It was called the Eye-Trek FMD-200. When they sent me a loaner unit I used it to test out movies on my PS2.

It's nice to see a piece of Oddware that is surprisingly decent and still functions fully to this day.
