@crossmr4 жыл бұрын
It's a symptom of the times. 30 years ago no one knew the value of anything. You couldn't look things up on Ebay or the internet at all. Outside of specialty hobbies like cards/coins/stamps/etc there were tons of deals to be had. In the mid 2000s that started to go away, and now everyone just googles everything. it's no longer about what they want, it's about what they think they can get.

We had a Rainbow vacuum when I was a kid. They were sold in a sort of MLM scheme like Kirby, but not quite as scammy. The main selling feature was that you filled the body with water, which would hold all the dirt etc. It didn't come out of the vacuum, it just sloshed around in the tank as you pulled the thing around. Then you had to dump dirty water. They came with scented drops you could add to the water and it would freshen up the rooms.
@squirlmy4 жыл бұрын

Parents had one of those plug-in flashlights. It was marketed as an emergency light. You were meant to turn the switch on and leave it plugged in, in a hallway or something. When there was AC the light would go out, but the nicads would trickle charge. If the power went out, it’d light up. The head hinged up and down a bit so you could aim the “emergency” light when it was sitting on the wall.

That Royal typewriter... it's been many, *many* years ago, so my memory could be faulty, but I think we actually had that exact same model! (It's also plausible that, since Royal built so many different models, that it's just a very similar model.) Of course, we eventually got an electric typewriter, which is still sitting on a desk in dad's old office. It hasn't been turned on in years because it was easier for my parents just to get me to use the computer to type whatever they needed and print it out. Actually, the price on that Tandy 2 was a little high but not totally unreasonable. A "parts machine" goes for $70-$100, and a working one with manual goes for about $140. Cut about $50 off the price, and someone would've snapped it up. (The cassette recorder is nice but not strictly necessary. The CoCo2 could use practically any cassette recorder.) The TI-99/4A, however, was definitely overpriced. New-old stock in the original box is going for $150-$175. Not only was that one obviously *not* new-old stock, it didn't have the box or manuals. $50 might have enticed someone.

That was the situation here in Columbus OH for awhile....the Ohio Thrifts were closed, but the Goodwill was open, and the three Volunteers of America locations I can get to were open (though at reduced hours). For a few months I actually stood a chance against the resellers and found some decent stuff at the VoAs, like a Model 2 Sega CD with a Model 2 Genesis attached (got it half-off, making it a little over $5; console only but I had the hookups, and it worked fine). Now that the lockdown is partially lifted, more and more resellers are showing up so I'm having less luck. And what is going on with those computers being $200? I have a Trash-80 and a couple of Ti-99 4/a's (one silver/black, one beige) I got at the VoA that used to be close to me a few years back for $4.94 each. Since I found them at the place where they had the keyboards, I suspect they thought they were just keyboards as well :) Stay safe, everyone!

Hi, I love your videos and I picked something up in today's vid. I collect 78s and in the second stack of records wrapped in plastic (1:40) it looks like the first record on the top of that stack is from the Vocalion label. Where was this goodwill? I'd like to call them about it. Some of the most valuable records made were on Vocalion, including early blues and country rarities. If not, you still may want to check those out. The one record you see, well I guess everyone knows, but, more meaningfully, its one of four discs of the original 1940 soundtrack "album" of The Wizard of Oz, which, if the other discs are in that heap and perhaps the jacket somewhere else, could be worth a few hundred bucks. Glad to be the shellac nerd everybody needs once in a while. As a chemist the Hot plate made me happy as well, i've used those. Cheerio!

I swear after watching this that Goodwill puts a bunch of different price tags in a hat, and pulls them out. Whatever the number is, that's the price. $200 for a TI-99 that looks beat to hell, and $100 for a church organ that looks like it is in great shape. Even if it didn't work, you could probably get it to work. The pricing makes zero sense.

UK, and I would imagine Ireland/EU as well, have a law that prohibits selling second hand electrical items unless they've been safety tested. Sadly, that means most ended up in the bin.
