Liege is going through a lot of construction work including the construction of tram lines which makes the city a little messy and a lot shops closed as well due to the lack of accessibility. It's a wonderful city known for its night life but I'd recommend coming by summer 2025.

About the grey ' look' in liège, it is Belgian Bluestone, and most buildings are 200-300 years old and made in that quality product. Don't understand before going up the stairs de Bueren, turn left, as that is the nicest part, a staircase 1 metre wide. that leads to the Liège gardens, and you come across a beer brewery.

One little tip. Once up at the top of the "escaliers de Bueren", pay a visite to what we call "the coteaux" which are in facts litle pathway on the slopes around theses stairs. Also, I advise you to go a bit further that the bottom on the stairs, a bit away from the center in the same streets called "hors chateau" (which means oustide the walls), there, you'll discover little charming dead-end streets. Lovely. Get lost on the famous roof-top of the old post office alongside the Meuse. While you are at it, just wander on the side of the river. You can also pick-up a little boat that goes up and down on the river in the summer month (don't do that if you are in a hurry ;-) ). Oh, try as much as you can the little bars all around the city center, there are to many to name them (by the way, Lou's bar is great with concerts on the Sunday, mind the "ti punch" (rhum-lime-sugar), they are quite....punchy.

Luik/Liège isn't bad at all, just a bit grey. That what hasn't been build in a grey color, turned grey with all the "heavy" industry of the past. I agree it's a bit more of a real city than Amsterdam is. It hasn't been polished as much for tourism.

Incroyable : faire "découvrir" Liège mais ignorer tous les espaces verts comme les coteaux (la campagne sur des dizaines d'hectares) en plein centre ville sans oublier que Liège est une des villes au monde ayant le plus d'espaces verts par habitant.

My wife and i just got back from Liege two days ago, I was dragged kicking and screaming to a concert at a place called Le Forum, we stayed at an apartment to in the building to the left of the old palace in your early clip, We loved it, was there alot of beggars, yes, did we ever feel threatened, no, and when we didn't know things people were always happy to help, I know we only spent a few days there and local have to live with it, but i would go back in a heart beat, We didn't do the steps, as we only found out about them the day we were leaving, There is so much history there. Great video.

Next time you come to Liège (and inside the cathedral), don't hesitate ton contact us (ask for Alexandre). We'd be happy to make you visit the entirety of the Treasure House and the carpentry woodwork. You've filmed an entire video without speaking to anyone, which is not a good way to discover our city: we have a wonderful patrimony, but the people of Liège are the real jewel. A guided tour will make you fall in love with the city and its inhabitants. Because, if you discover Liège correctly, you'll cry when you arrive, but you'll cry even more when you leave! ;-)

"they" never went to Liège . "They hate Wallonia" We know who "they" are and won't forget . This little town of 195 000 inhabitants in the middle of a 700 000 urban aera .It's a grey city because they use grey stones to build their houses but they use red bricks too so it's a red and grey city . Muricuns have funny ideas .But i must admit that in the end they give a thumb up to Liège who's not a city for tourists but the people there live well .

You selected a very bad moment to visit Liège, go again in one year, it will be much better. Comment to your visit: The station colours were added later, it is normally transparent / white, and not sure the colours will remain forever, it might be temporary. Place St Lambert building is mainly the Tribunal of the province, that place is normally nice but quite ugly because of the works ongoing. Gauffre waffles are better hot, don't let them become cold. You were very courageous to take the stairs up to the top, i think I never did it. You found the Sunday market, congratulations, you missed the river though, there are ferrys on river going from around the train station down the market where you were, a very nice way of discovering the city and situate some of the museums. The church you show is in the center and somehow surrounded by small street and in particular "The carré" which is famous for bars (a students hot spot) and restaurants at night. Meatballs in Liège indeed very well known in the whole country. There is a place in Liège you need to find (I think it's called Lequet ?) where you wil find very artisanal Liège meatball with Fries.

the place st lambert where the prince bishop lives ? st lambert was a bishop that lived 1000 years ago .. We are not in the middle age haha LOL .. nowadays this building is the justice court of Liège . But Anyway that's a pity you visited very few from Liège because the heart of the city is actually in the upper Liège .. if you go up after the buren stairs then go down from there to the left you can see beautiful picturesque small streets in the Publémont which aren't grey at all and often there is some that have little courtyard and garden, some house dates from the 16 century ... too bad you did not visit this part and also there is not only this cathedral that you saw but another one which was not too far and there is a beautiful garden next to the cathedral .. also you missed the other side of the river ,, outremeuse and the park of the Boverie which has a really beautiful that is also a museum of art . There is also one of the most beautiful bridge of Belgium which was built in the same time as one in Paris ( which kind of look similar ) for the universal exposition in 1905 but it s not downtown it's just before the train station .. this city takes time to visit because there are also many little street with rampart that goes up and it s not so conveniant to walk , many street have stairs also but then it s the charm of the city .. i m from Liege and i find that the center itself place st lambert is not the most picturesque part of the city . it would have been better to take a guide with you because this city does not have really big attractions for tourist .. as you search also on the internet or guide , they don't really show liege as its advantage and they say there are few things to see only like the buren stairs and some museum but there are many more and it s not just a party city as it's also reputed to be just a party place in Belgium among student especially .. also dirty in some areas yes ,because also of many construction work and demolition of historical places that often have disfigured the city over years but pretty if you find the time to explore ... also a pretty cool place to see is the basilica called the sacré coeur and it's more up in the city .. we can see it from the train station .. and it's another part of the city which is also up and you have a nice view from the station .. Next time i hope you come back and visit some others parts of Liège but maybe it will be better from january 2025 after the tramway constructions are over .. ahh and the place you've been for the meatball was good but not the best for people here , there are some places with that are more specialized with boulet liégeois .. Like "café lequet " near the market you've been is among the best and one of the oldest place to eat it

Ooohhhh now I want a big meatball. I think I know that parking garage. Steep and narrow and old! You think the colorful trainstation is to compensate for all the gray buildings? Must have been expensive though, paid with taxpayers money. It's a shame you didn't get to enjoy some Belgian beers. After a few of those you don't mind all the gray and the dirt. In Belgium they know how to eat and drink. And most of them are also extremely nice people. Keep it up!

I am from Liège and live here - the colouring of the station is temporary (should be taken off within the next few months), and cost 600.000€ (just for the colouring) - however only 10% of the cost to colour the station was paid by the taxpayers money, as 90% of the whole cost was funded by donators :) The man behind this is the french artist Daniel Buren.

The Calatrava designed Guillemins train station in Liège, while architecturally stunning with its open, airy structure, seems impractical for Belgium's cold, windy, and humid climate, and the exorbitant cost of the project could have been better allocated to more pressing infrastructure needs.
@Shyning77
@Shyning77 3 ай бұрын
Hey, nice to see my city ! :) I'm living next to the centre. The city is a bit dirty, yes, but please note that it's way messier than it usually was because of the tram lines, which have been under construction for years, and a lot of stores and shops closed because of that. The construction budget skyrocketed, but it should be finished in 2025, fortunately. You should come back in a couple of years, maybe around the October Fair, which is very typical of the city. You should also note that the colors on Calatrava's Guillemins train station were not initially planned and are decals added later by an artist. It was meant to be temporary, but I guess it costed so much to apply (and will cost some more to remove) that it stayed ;) At the top of the Bueren stairs, you probably missed a beautiful view on the city if you didn't walk around the citadel. Liège is famous for its night life style indeed. I'm just a few streets away from the "Au Point de Vue" tavern/restaurant, which I go from time to time. I'd also recommend "Chez Philippe" at the top of Haute-Sauvenière street, for great "french" fries, meatballs and "filet américain" (which, despite its name, has been invented in Brussels). If you like chocolate (which Belgium is also famous for), I'd highly recommend the "Franz" shop in the middle of Saint-Gilles street.

Tbh, Im Liegan and Ive to say that maybe summer 2026 might be a better date to be sure that all the majors public works will be finished ^^. But yes, it's a rly rich history city in Belgium. Humans are living there since around 10000 BC (at least some human camps were founded there ^^). It was an old Roman villa wich was a huge farm domain at the ancient Rome Empire period then when Saint Lambert died in martyr in the 8th century it became a pelgrim spot and then evoluated into an episcopal city led byt the Archbishop of Maastricht even if its capital was mainly Liège due to its religiousimportance. Then it becomes an Episcopal Principalty wich was attached to the Holy Germanic Roman Empire. At that era the Archbishop was also Prince and was called Prince Archbishop wich was a special Title and was ordonated by the Pope and in the same time feal of the Germanic Emperor. He was granted both spirutal and secular powers ^^. During that period Liège was also called the "one hundred bell tower city" due to the number of churches, abbays and monasteries into the city. We had also one of the biggest cathedral in Europe (if not the biggest but im not sure, it was bigger but a bit similar to Notre Dame of Paris and both the roofs of that cathedral were covered with gold sheets) but the Liegans destroyed it themselves when they revolt against the last Archbishop, it was after the French Revolution but before Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Europe. Its kinda messy i know, but well that's my city history and now the city got a huge student population due to the University so during scholar espally there is a rly intersting night life ^^.

well for one day, certainly it comes as "exotic", even "nice". But living here, between the fact that everything is grey, the dirtiness, pauperty, toxicomany, abnormal prices, grey people (unless they had one many beer, that seems to be the national sport there), well that is the reality. But thank god for these toursits, they just stay one to three days there.

Grey people? Seriously? Our city is known for having among the nicest people in Belgium. In fact walloons in general are more compared to Spaniards in terms of friendliness than to our Flemish neighbours. The average person in Liège will slow down while walking so they can greet you and hear your response back.

I wouldn't know what's so great about Liege apart from the station. Dinant and Namur are more interesting.

From a heritage point of view, Liège is extremely rich, thanks to its almost thousand-year history as a Principality (which, by the way, Dinant was part of). But I respect your opinion.

@@wanneske1969 Yes, these blast furnaces are part of our history, when Liege was one of the places where industry was one of the most flourishing in Europe and fortunately some will be preserved; a museum project is currently being carried out. However, I would like to contradict the fact that you say that Dinant and Namur are more interesting than Liege; of course, these cities are worth visiting. But in no case can we omit the history and heritage importance of Liege. Of which, I remind you, Dinant was a good city in the principauté of Liege. All three cities are interesting to see.

@@wanneske1969 Of course, the abandoned factories in the valley will be largely destroyed to make way for other types of economic activities. That is why I would like to point out that it is good to preserve some elements of our industrial past which, believe it or not, can be exploited for tourist purposes.

I'm in shock the difference in clean streets vs the Netherlands. But also the big buildings, they could use a facade cleaning. Like the church. About 7-8 years ago it was bit better, (i mean in Bruges i came a lot) but i would not be surprised if there are rats in Liège. Sad, i love ❤ Belgium, it's not taking care of there infrastructure and precious buildings. 😢
