Yes! I'm from a full family of adhders. Dad hyperactive, mum - inattentive and myself and my siblings + most of our children, diagnosed combined. And I love that you say it's a superpower because I say the same to my kids. They're all so different, I have 2 grown boys and 2 young girls. One of my boys and one of my girls are academically "gifted" although we're not supposed to use that word anymore. Where as my other son and daughter and incredibly creatively "gifted" and whatever they turn their hand to, be it poetry, playing an instrument, sculpting, drawing, sewing etc, turns out amazing! They might struggle more on the academic side of things, but their skills in other areas are something to be proud of. ADHD has its struggles, but there are advantages in areas that balance it out somewhat. Thank you for such a lovely response ❤️

It totally is. And I think that's another reason why some people aren't diagnosed till later in life, for me, I was raised with my mom being such a classic case of adhd, as am I, but growing up with her and being with her every day, I thought that the way she acted and approached tasks was typical, and therefore so was I. Recently we both realized we both fit every single criteria for inattentive adhd and we had no idea before.

Really good video you two! I'm still waiting for an adhd assessment. I'm only 60 though so plenty of time 😂 It caused a lot of problems. I'd start off jobs, learn everything about the company, memorise all the stock, everyone's phone extension numbers, invent new systems for doing things and then I'd get used to the place, literally fall asleep at the desk and be unable to motivate myself to file a piece of paper! People couldn't understand what had happened to the person from the week before! I do think diagnosis is important.

ADHD medication can make a huge difference. My son has always been very bright, but did struggle with ADHD. I wasn’t excited about putting him on medication while growing. Once he was a senior in High School, my husband and I decided that we would let him try the medication and WOW! He really really just took off-everything became better. Now, he has straight A’s in school with a dual degree, works full time, and is so much calmer and less frustrated with himself.

Liam, I got diagnosed at 37 and was so scared of medication. If you tried to take it from me now, I’d fight to my last breath. The meds don’t ‘fix’ it, but it does help a LOT. I suffer the same thing with getting half way through something and then just losing interest. It’s very frustrating and embarrassing 🫣 but the meds do help with that. I’m more like the person I want to be, or the person I felt like in my head with meds. I remember to wash dishes, I remember to put my keys in the right place, I remember appointments and when I am supposed to leave. Biggest bonus? Since starting Ritalin, I go to bed at night and fall asleep immediately. Try the meds. Worst happens, you don’t like it and can stop. ❤

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child, and now provide assessment for children and young people. I feel it's very important for those diagnosed with ADHD to thoroughly understand the neurological and neurodevelopmental aspects of it, particularly differences in the functions of neurotransmitters (especially dopamine). I always take the time to discuss it with those I'm assessing and their families. It also really helps to understand why stimulant medications like methylphenidate work so well for ADHD, and why it's generally considered a first line treatment by paediatricians and psychiatrists. I'm glad your assessor took the time to explain some of it, and I would definitely recommend continuing to learn about it (from reputable sources, there's a lot of misinformation), as this can very much assist with self-understanding, acceptance and developing effective management strategies that will work for you individually. A formal diagnosis is a great first step forward, all the best on your journey 💖

This is exactly me and my husband before he started his ADHD medication. He is so much more focused on a single task that he can now finish! Generally speaking they give amphetamines for ADHD and for a GP to tell you you won't get side effects if you don't take they are chatting waffle! They are a controlled drug for a reason as they are addictive and can have some severe side effects! Also right now in my area they are nigh on impossible to get at the pharmacy due to the higher rate of diagnosis of ADHD. My hubby can go maybe one or two days with a break from his meds before he is just completely flat after that he's useless at life. Not trying to put you off but just inform that if it is an amphetamine they will be prescribing you to be more careful to take them regularly and order early but also keep in close contact with pharmacy so as not to run out for too long. Hope this makes sense!

Liam what I do to get the dopamine hit when i need to do house hold chores is make a very detailed in order list. Then i get a little hit of dopamine with everything I cross off. And some tasks you do naturally together so you grt to cross off 2-3 things at once for alittle bit bigger dopamine hit. Example: Seperate laundry Start laundry in washer Start washer timer on phone Put away clean dishes Wash dishes Rinse dishes Put dishes in rack to dry Take out trash 15 minute break with timer(im physically disabled so require this but think everone should do it so they can get a drink of water and check their list) New trash bag in Check if dishes are dry Get 2 dryer sheets Put 1st dryer sheet in dryer Put clothes from washer in dryer Put 2nd sryer sheet in dryer Start dryer Set dryer timer on phone Hang clothes that dont go in the dryer. Vacuum bedroom Vacuum living room Vacuum kitchen But you get the point. Honestly if i hadnt came up with this system i would never get anything done.

Oh man, 🤣😂 I pissed my pants, tea out of my nose, coughing, tears, snot, ......., oy, this was the best outro EVER! 😂 What a great conversation this, so recognizable and comforting also. I was diagnosed as hyperactive as a toddler, in those days there weren't all these labels yet. It is hard to just be the way you are and nobody understands you and you don't understand why you are "different". My brain just works differently but now I'm in my 50's and I just let it be. No medication, just coping mechanisms learned through the years. I have physical troubles now and it makes me extremely tired a lot of the time, so the physical hyper is much less, but the brain still goes crazy. It is still hard but yeah, that's just the way it is. As I say it comforts me to see someone like you explain and talking about it. You are the best Liam. ❣Thanks. As a misdiagnosed ADHDer, now actually diagnosed autistic lady in my late 20s, I also have massive issues with sleep because my brain is overactive. My body can be completely physically exhausted and my brain will still not let me sleep. It takes the PERFECT circumstances to help me sleep and that "perfect" can vary from night to night. Eg, a podcast might work one night, but another night it would be either too overstimulating or understimulating for me to relax and sleep. It's a damn pain in the ass. But yeah. ADHD and ASD (autism) have quite a few symptoms in common and it's not uncommon for people with either diagnoses to have symptoms from the other. Also, I figure that I also get along a LOT better and easier with others who are on the spectrum or those with ADHD :)

You sound like you are describing me and my brain and habits. I was only just diagnosed by a therapist early this year, and I'm 40 yo. It's been a huge life-changing realization for me. After researching ADHD types and presentations, and watching a lot of other people's videos describing their life and experience with it, I am finally seeing a large part of why I am so messed up (mentally, and physically). I am working toward changing my bad habits, trying to find non-medicated ways of coping and fixing the dopamine issue (that are healthy or at least not harmful). I am very sensitive to stimulants, oddly enough. So I self-medicate with drinking tea. It works rather well for me. It's not a fix, but nothing in this life is. Thank you for sharing your stories, Alexis and Liam! You are amazing people.

Also, I quit smoking nearly two years ago. That's why I ended up seeking the help of a therapist. Apparently my ADHD went berzerk and I was spiraling... I try not to focus on the past but this bugs the heck out of me. Being misdiagnosed all those years.

I fully understand that there are good and bad things about the different systems and I'm not trashing one or the other. One thing I would say depending on Liam’s medication, is that he MUST eat before taking it. Ideally some sort of protein or a hearty breakfast. I also get really annoyed if I hurt myself as well.

I love Liam's personality and attitude, it would be sad to dull it. His passion for what he does, who he meets, and how he engages with enthusiasm is, probably, in no small part due to his ADHD. If you like who you are, consider carefully what steps you take to change in the future. Sometimes the biggest thing in the process of getting a diagnosis is knowing what is going on. Then you can look at a variety of potential solutions. ADHD can include medication, or you can also work on Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT) if medication is not a feasible route. Take the time and knowledge you know have to make the most informed decision.

Hey, Alexis, when you stop smoking, and probably the same thing with vaping, there are some really interesting things that can help. A weird one is that nicotine is released into the pores in your upper lip, as you perspire, so that when you lick your lips you get that craving for a cigarette/vape. So, if you can forgo the makeup for a few days, and keep a few wipes or a flannel handy, just swipe your upper lip frequently. Another is that your B vitamins are probably fluctuating. The water soluble vitamins are most affected. A B50 a few times a day helps. But the one that helps with Jekyll & Hyde, rage switching, or just massive personality shift is B2 massive deficiency. My partner went through it and was told a protocol of 900mg for 3-5 days (300mg x 3 times per day or 200 every few hours. (I know it sounds like a lot, but it’s really not! I take 10k of some things for my Shingles.) it’s only for 3-5 days, then 500/day then 300/day, then 100/day. If you feel like you still are having huge mood swings, go back up a few. It is really based on the individual, and I’m not sure what it would be if you’ve been gaping vs smoking. My partner had been smoking for 40 years- teens thought it was fun to get the 8 yr old to smoke. It was amazing the difference when he did these things. Hope it helps. Best wishes.

I am not an MD, so please take this as it is, a suggestion. If you have ADHD , be careful, they generally prescribe stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin. I just finished reading a book written by an author that is a Md and a PhD in psychology. He cited medical studies that showed that those drugs can cause damage to a center in the brain that can cause issues with motivation. He said he encourages parents who bring in kids w ADHD diagnosis to look into using something like Wellbutrin instead. Again I am not an MD, nor a researcher, I pass that on that only as something you may want to talk to tye doctor about. Interesting part about Adderall et al, someone was able to run a control study w ADHD and non ADHD ppl in a double blind study, and the non adhd ppl showed improved performance too .given these are stimulants, not surprising

I’m 38 and still waiting to reschedule my assessment (forgot/procrastinated the paperwork). I am a woman, and from what I gather, I’ve got the more inattentive form of adhd vs. the hyperactive. That being said, this conversation sounds so similar to the way my husband and I talk about the symptoms that I have that can be annoying to someone with a more typical brain. The comment about the drawers being open is one that is constantly mentioned in our house. However, that is not as annoying to my husband as when I (or my daughter who also most likely has adhd) leaves our actual door open. Thankfully we’ve never had anyone break in (or rather come in since the door is wide open).

If there is a problem with my computer and I have done everything with all the knolledge I have, I have to consult the computer and tech forums I scour through like a blood hound to find a fix or solution, and if not youtube it, its actually how I fixed my phone I had dropped in the sink while doing the dishes and I put it in rice for 3 days, then tried to turn it on......nothing, so I tried everything and a silly wee trick from youtube solved it, after 40 hours looking for fixes and parts and phoning and asking repair shops, a silly 38 second short fixed it for me, was drained and cried as I hadnt slept for days properly without my apps to sleep, and slept for half a day while my phone charged again, was sooooo nervous it would blow up or something while charging, but when I woke up it was fine thankfully!

Liam you are so cute when you are wizzy, like a big kid, I bet it is tiring for you both though. Hopefully you can start finding your perfect equilibrium now. I have to put my headphones in and listen to a story, I have heard before, so that I can quieten my mind to sleep. My man can put his head down on his pillow and he’s off, it’s so infuriating that I can’t. The only time that it was easier to sleep was when I was getting 4 hours, non consecutive, sleep a night for 3 years when my boy was little. 😂

Also I'm not sure if this is relevant as I haven't watched yet but there are so many helpful ADHD strategies on here. I got diagnosed at 42 and went straight on meds as literally nothing worked for my depression bit I've had extended periods off meds too and the strategies and neurosciencey stuff was so helpful

My daughter switched to vaping ( she tried patches & gum in the past ), she is doing well, she has been round other smokers and not even tempted. She is currently reducing the nicotine in her vape. When I gave up smoking, I missed having something to do with my hands, I still sometimes miss cigarettes but remind myself of how it makes your mouth feel horrible and stained fingers and that stops me going back. Good luck with kicking the dreaded cigarettes, it will get easier, and think of all the money you will save, I paid for new kitchen cabinets with the money I saved.

Yea i was vaping for 6 years and was time to stop because i was constantly clearing my throat and coughing all the time, vaping i defo better than the nastyness thats in cigs but its better to quit completly when you can. I feel much better health wise since i quit x

For me, the notifications system doesn't work. It only generally works on my phone WHEN I have the YT app installed. I don't tend to watch videos on my phone. I watch YT and browse the web mostly on my computer. Notifications don't work. The bell in the upper right corner rarely shows a notification even when I have notifications enabled for new videos from my subscribed channels. I gave up on that feature since it's not working. YT needs to do better.

Thanks, Liam, for explaining how ADHD works. The Dopamine side. I have it but no diagnosis so no meds. Been wondering whether to or not. Really really bad at the moment though. 😕

I gave up smoking ten years ago and then went though a breakup (We'd been together 25 years and owned a business together). Smoked a few packets after the breakup, and then got control. I went to vaping. Still vaping but down to 3mg. Next is 0 mg and then Zero vaping,

Hi Alexis! Can you talk about the mess on twitter right now about a native american trans woman who used a Japanese name as her new name? A lot are supportive cause "you should be able to choose the name you want", and that name gatekeeping shouldn't be a thing while others are upset about it cause it's appropriation and the woman tweeted, in a somewhat bragging way, about getting turned on about Japanese people properly pronouncing her name in moans. The drama startes with her tweeting about her therapist deadnaming her when she asked the therapist to call her Saeko. The therapist asked her "Psycho?" and she responded "No, Saeko." and the therapist proceeded to use her deadname instead.

I was diagnosed a couple of years at 50+. My niece and my brother have both subsequently had ND diagnoses. Pretty sure my partner is also ADHD. There are a lot of us about, a lot of people who have been failed by the system.

In February I was finally diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 30. This was amazing validation for me however 8 months later I'm still waiting for an appointment with the titration service for medication. I was told it would be a maximum of 7 months. Somehow this is worse.
