Roy was in his 40's and Lenny late 20's. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if they were both late 20's. Roy was past his peak whereas Lenny was at his peak. 2 very tough men with a lot of heart.

Not to mention Lenny was the FAR larger man. Roy had an uphill battle from the get-go but he didnt care. I am a huge fan of mclean but i think when you get down to brass tacks roy was the tougher of the two. He was a genuine loose cannon as well when it came time to get busy.

When I was just a kid 15 y old my neighbour, kinda took me under his wing. He was from the East End of London. He would talk about these guys and how he drove a "Lorry" and as he said doing "doggie business". He always drove jaguars and had lot of spare cash. In those days it was rare. As for the Lenny thing, he was beaten twice, that brutal KO knocked him senseless, was one of the most brutal Knockouts I’ve ever seen, he was out on his feet, took about 5-6 heavy punches while he was collapsing… Regardless, Roy was a seriously hard bastard, nobody else would’ve lasted as long he did. He had that I’ll never quit attitude, guys like this you hate to fight, no matter how many times you hit them they get back up and av another go!… Like pit bulls, loveable and caring, no fear wouldn’t back down from anything. I have met Shaw and McLean. I became friendly with Lenny when he worked the doors. He was a real gentleman and always took time to talk to me and tell me stories of his past. He was a real character. I met Shaw a few times at unlicensed fights, I found him quite wooden to be honest, always seemed like he was out of it, either on meds, drugs or just punch drunk. Out of the two I much preferred Lenny. He always gave me good advice, my favourite quote from him was "never mistake kindness for weakness"

I read both their books and in lennys book it includes 3 fights (2 wins for lenny 1 for roy) but in roys book its only 2 fights (1 win each). Then also he writes about drinking ginseng before the re match and it made him groggy.

But I can't see how a few tablets could be the reasons to both his Lenny losses. I've heard loads of times from various people Cliff Fields knocked Lenny out.. Cliff was from Dunstable just up the road from me in Luton. I think he became an alcoholic drinking on park benches taking a beating now and again by louts taking advantage of his poor health. I don't know if he's still alive.. Poor man

Ginseng can in certain circumstances cause dizziness and drowsiness and high dosages of vitamin E of 400I IU or more per day can cause several side effects including blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, tiredness and weakness. I am not arguing either way about the particular fights here and just the fact that both have side effects.

2023 and it's a shame real hard MEN like this aren't either around, or celebrated anymore. These guys are gangsters, but also had a code. Today's road men wouldn't even be a thing back then.

Just heard the bouncer story frin one of the bouncers. I like roy, but have to admit the bouncer sounded a lot more truthful. Got to admit id love to have aeen the fights with these old school men and the bouncers. Roy was a wild, wild man. Most certainly insane.
