It's a political party, if the party's ideology is not reflected in a candidate they are entirely permitted to deselect him, it's literally codified law as an exemption of the Equality Act. If a conservative MP suddenly became socialist, of course they'd be deselected too. The Lib Dems have a pro-LGBT platform, this candidate couldn't assure he would vote in line with this, so the party dropped him. Simple as. You also cannot hide all your political views behind religion. If a violent anti LGBT candidate wanted to join the theoretical LGBT party but said "you can't ban me, it's part of my religion" that would be absurd. Why is this different? Not to mention this candidate has been very vocal about the christian underpinnings of british culture, has talked extensively about "woke cancel culture", all things which, irregardless if you believe or not, are clearly not in line with Liberal Democrat party values. Once again, it's not about if you agree with his views, it's if the party does. And clearly, he does not belong in the Liberal Democrats with some of the views he has. If your politics do not fit a party, join a party they do. As said, if a conservative MP came out and said "i'm now a socialist, progressive, pro-trans rights, globalist, EU supporter" you would exect the party to remove them from their lists. Why on earth is it odd that the Liberal Democrats, a socially liberal, economically centrist, pro LGBT, pro EU, secular party find someone who has repeatedly talked about how a religion is fundamental to the UK, how he cannot support a core part of their party platform (gay and trans rights). Because, he's clearly out of line with the party line. In addition, parties have a legal exemption from the Equality Act 2010 for certain things for this very reason. So do many many things in the UK - social clubs can be segregated by sex and religion, you have ethnic societies at University who only accept members of that ethnicity etc. www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/part/7/crossheading/special-provision-for-political-parties

@calum5975 You're advocating for someone to be discriminated against because of their religious beliefs, which is indeed a breech of the Equality Act. Simple as.

@@HearGodsWord That's NOT how the equality act works. Not permitting him entry to a party based on his faith is entirely permitted, within reason. If you have a political party called "Muslim Brotherhood of the UK", they would be permitted to only accept Muslims. There IS a Christian party in the UK which requires Christian membership. There are also Jewish political organisations where membership is only open to Jewish people. Campanale has alternative parties to join, the liberal democrats are not hindering any of his rights. There are literal schools in the UK only open to people of certain religions - catholic schools, muslim schools, jewish schools, Church of England schools. Furthermore - he is not being deselected for being a christian, no matter how you phrase it. He's being deselected for his non compliance on party lines regarding LGBT stances, and statements he has made about the secular nature of british schools. There are millions of Christians who are able to be both Christian and pro LGBT, and the Liberal Democrats have Chrisitans amongst their ranks. Even then, not permitting him entry to a party based on his faith is entirely permitted, within reason. @@HearGodsWord Political parties have a specific exemption under the equality act. If you have a party called the British Muslim Brotherhood, obviously it would be absurd to allow Christians and Jewish people to join it. Likewise, there are Christian parties in the UK (although minor) which are only open to Christians. www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/part/7/crossheading/special-provision-for-political-parties

@HearGodsWord but this is a political party. If his religious beliefs are going to influence him to vote against party policy and ideology then they can deselect him. They aren't deselecting him because he's Christian, they're deselecting him because he can't commit to the party policy
