The drum beat for, "Uptown Girl," is a subtle beast. I think it's probably much harder to play than you would imagine.

OMG!!!! Great stories! Me wants more! I could be sitting here listening to Lib for as long as he would go on; it is like participating live in those experiences, not to mention the historic meaning of it all. At 16:31 he mentioned how Phil Ramone wanted him to play "Moving Out" just doing quarter notes on bass and snare "This is what people will remember" - he said- I have argued that point my whole life as a musician. I do not have a great name like Lib or Mr. Ramone, but I have always said the same thing! unbelievable, imagine my surprise when I hear the same here! I used to draw laughs and more from fellow musicians for my stance that a good drummer is never ever about how fast, or how many notes can do in a fill but how it "blends in" with the song he or she plays. Later on he talks about Havana Jam, 1979 in Cuba, at which time I was 15 years old and already a follower and a fan of Joel's work, then with the help of my Dad, who was working with the entourage in charge of moving Billy Joel's instruments and equipment in town, I sneaked in the back of the Karl Marx Theater and met briefly many of them; I was like a little groupie then but it was awesome to meet in person one of my idols. How blessed for me to have followed and learned always from nothing but the best; My deepest respects to you Liberty DeVitto; one of the greatest Rock and Roll drummers in the world!

Love Billy but really miss Liberty. Nobody can replace the dynamics and excitement on a stage like he can. Every drum stroke is done with authority. Every cymbal hit is just shy of cracking the damn thing. Really hard to play with that intensity all night long. But he did it. Billy Joel's live shows were legendary and Liberty played a huge part in that.

I've been a major fan of Billy and the Lords of 52nd for 30 years and you pulled some great stories out of Liberty that I've never heard before so you deserve credit for a great interview too! I was lucky enough to meet Liberty briefly at a promotional event for Hired Gun in LA and really wanted to chat him up for some great stories like these but the only words I managed to get out were "Hi nice to meet you." So thanks again for a great interview!

Liberty Devito is like Carmine appice , Joey Franco (Good Rats NYNY} and many great east coast rock drummers with an edge and power that make them unique. Most of these great drummer/artist/ muscians learned their craft from great drummers from the 1940s-1960s and left thier speacial mark on the work they created and for those of us who love their playing.

Peter Chriss (b. George Peter John Criscuola) took a few lessons from Gene Krupa. He was a big influence on him. Not comparing drummers, but kinda cool that two NYC guys both mention Gene a lot.

Benevolent Backpacker Liberty is very fit and cycles around Brooklyn and goes to the gym. As a drummer you have to stay fit. Liberty is 69 years old this year.

Without Doug (Stegmeyer) and Liberty, there is no Billy Joel "sound" which is why, despite Billy having been my first-ever idol -- back in the mid-70s after first hearing "James" during the 2nd Semester of my sophomore year at boarding school -- I have never had the privilege to see Billy live-in-concert because I could never settle for less, having any number of substitute bassists or drummers filling in. Not sure what the fallout was between them and Billy, but it's such a sad thing.

It's a SIN that Liberty is not playing w/Joel..You can tell Liberty is till looking for credit for some of the ideas he had. Unfortunately, ideas don't translate to money, melodies do and I think this is why Liberty is not with Billy anymore. He wanted some $. As much as I like Liberty's drumming, he seems to have too much to say. Like HE had to point out to genius Billy Joel that his tune sounded like Neil Sedaka's tune - Hey Schmuck! He probably got on Joel's nerves.
