And this kids, is why "full product ownership" is important. As this is a "physical product with a digital component", Liberty Safe owns the rights to everything digital and you don't own anything digital, you get a "license" to use it, so they're well within their rights to "give out" the said "digital information" which unlocks your safe. I remember when my friend older broder came to help with my PC and he wanted to go into BIOS that was protected by password and he just used master code... that was pre internet times and we were living in a tiny place far from big cities and "real hackers".

@Astraeus.. Жыл бұрын
Realistically speaking there would have to be. Otherwise something as simple as a lost/forgotten combination basically renders it completely worthless to it's function. With a dial/lock system an experienced locksmith/safesmith would be able to get in with a bit of time and the right equipment (without damaging the mechanisms, that is) but with a digital keypad it's far more practical to just have a master code that let's you bypass the whole thing... Having said that, I would have at LEAST expected it not to just be an actual code that literally anybody could use if they had it. It would make a lot more sense if there was some kind of device that the manufacturer has where they could send one of their guys out, he'd access the safe via said device and get it open that way, sort of like a digital universal key. The way they've done it here, now that those cops have the code they can literally just open ANY of Liberty Safe they feel like (or maybe just any of that specific model, but still, it's a problem...)
@A.B.5KRVw Жыл бұрын
@@Astraeus.. Agreed. There are also additional possible solutions. Like a master code that opens the safe but only after a substantial timeframe like 7 days or something. So this would prevent the code from being used in theft, but also making the safe recoverable in worst case scenarios. An additional possibility would be a biometric scan of the owner with a master code. The biometric scanner that is stored in the manfaturer company would encript the mastercode stored by the company and could only be decoded with biometric scan of the owner. So the owner would basically need to unlock the "administrative" opening of his/her own safe.

modern devices without measures like that are actually pretty rare you need factory and service level access for most things controlled by electronics... though there ARE security devices specifically without those included, they have their own classification from what i was told... and what often happens is that the customer bricks it, and then calls the company a bunch of scammers for refusing to fix it for them

Watched a video earlier on how to replace a safe keypad. The referenced replacement parts advertise the amount of codes built in, and there are no less than 2 codes (some products have 3 or 4). So even if you replaced the keypad after the fact, *someone* *somewhere* has a backup code for the keypad you are using. The only thing I wonder about at this point is if there is a way to flash the memory to remove ALL codes, then somehow flash new codes into all the memory slots meant for codes. At that point the factory won't know your backup code anymore.

@Kr0noZ Жыл бұрын
@@nnamggiFellauQrD No, there may be a code set that ALWAYS works but it isn't a requirement of the lock system, just something manufacturers may do for convenience. If you have a purely mechanical safe, you potentially can have a locksmith rebuild the mechanism so there are no "master combinations", but that could be expensive and of course... requires you to trust the locksmith in question. In general terms, electronic locks are bad for consumers (you never know what goes on inside the electronics) and mechanical systems need to be from a trusted source. Downside? If you ever lose the key, you have to bust the safe yourself to get in as there are no backups, which is likely why this "master key/code" even started existing.

@@nnamggiFellauQrD no, but as a customer you might not even know about it. Mind you, I'm not an expert on locks, but if a lock allows a master key it means that said lock has two sets of pin positions to open it. So it's WAY more vulnerable by default. that's assuming the lock itself is really good. And when it comes to electronic locks... It's not just "another key" to open it. It can be brute-forced, it can be easily copied if it's a card/car key and if it's a shit enough lock it can be opened with a strong magnet.

Unfortunately they exist in every form of tech. Your computer, phone, smartwatch, smart security, security cameras, everything. Windows has numerous backdoors. Hell, some computer manufacturers, after finding out the feds were intercepting some computers in transit to write in backdoors or bug them, opted to simply work with the feds and write them in for them. The only thing that doesn't have any intentional backdoors (though some zero days still exist) is many Linux distros. Not all, I'm sure Ubuntu and some of the larger company ran options likely do. Gentoo doesn't, Arch, and many others don't considering the amount of independent eyeballs looking at the code for such things and many others. Certain manufacturer roms of Android have tried, some succeeded (not through Google but through the carrier roms and some phone manufacturers) but the voice is public for the vanilla roms and rooting allows you to remove it. Unless it's in a locked bootloader which you'll only find on a carrier phone, not an unlocked version you buy outside your carrier - which I highly suggest for numerous reasons if you can afford the cost all at once. Of course there's AT&T and Room 641A.. or the NSA watching the entire internet, even encrypted connections. So anything you send or receive is known to them. Thanks Bush. Thanks Patriot Act and boomers who cheered it on.

@@nullnull3553 nope, Signal, LUKS, KDE Vaults, and countless other methods of basic zero-trust systems exist that rely on trusting no other party. The people who *_aren't_* new to technology are the exact people pointing out how ludicrous this is since technology allows cryptography, meanwhile a physical lock can just be picked. Currently even asymetric cryptography is unbreakable for any reasonable key length, quantum computers might break that but Q-safe algorithms are already being tested and standardized, and symmetric cryptography (while still damaged but quantum computing) is largely secure. Digital systems are basically the only ones where you *_can_* be certain they're undefeatable since they rely on mathematical protection. Of course if it's a safe they can always try to physically break in since we can't digitize and encrypt matter itself, but that has lots of other considerations that need to be taken into account. (the reason the FBI asked for the code in the first place was because they COULDN'T get in after all. There is just lots of extra legal, monetary, PR, etc. overhead with attempting to physically break into a safe) I don't think it's exactly new information that the Lockpicking Lawyer exists, but you know who doesn't? The Cryptography-Cracking-Crackhead. A properly implemented digital protection system can quite literally have it's entire whitepaper emailed to everyone on earth, and still be secure with certainty. (again, outside of any physical attacks) On the other hand there is a reason why you're never supposed to say a lock is "unpickable". Physical systems have some benefits, but a lack of methods-for-bypass is not even remotely one of them. If I destroy a lock I get into your house; if I destroy your hard drive then sure I broke your encryption, but I also broke the data I wanted to get too.
