A year and a half ago I watched this video at the same time I decided to take my first glider flight. I've continued to glide ever since and I have to say, this beautiful film continues to capture the essence of gliding for me. It's exhilarating, fun, wonderful and totally accessible. I mean, where else would you want to be?I hope it inspires more people to take up flying. Nice one Libor!

Wonderful; it brought back memories of fifty years ago, floating along the ridge at Sutton Bank in Yorkshire in an open cockpit T21. Thirty feet over the heads of the hikers and the smell of spring grass and bluebells.

I did imagine these wonderful gliders transformed in terrible noise trembling ultralights. It was like losing my mind, going mad suddenly. Fortunately it was just a nightmare, it is over now, I'm looking to the other videos of gliders in the right side bar and recovering.

Nice pictures of my youth ! I flew my "D " Silver medal glider performance flight within two days on a Nord 1300 which was the french name for the Grünau Baby ,( taken after the war ) . It was in 1964 in Mantes-Cherence glider airfield . I flew SA 104 " Emouchet " too . The noise of the grass bouncing along the wooden fuselage when landing after 5 hours flight was a marvelous moment . A time of full pleasure .

Vielen dank für diese film. Ich hatte meine D prüfung geflogen on a Nord 1300 : das ist franzöziche name für der Grünau Baby . Ich hatte es in zwei tagen geflogen , und das ist meine besser errinerung über diese wunderlisch zeiten . Es war in 1964 yahre in Cherence Flugplatz und Deutscher Zegelflieger Freunden von Grevenbroich-NeuneHausen fliegende mit Uns . Es war zeit des Glücks !

Puzzled by the name Hol's der Teufel I researched it. Wiki gave a fascinating, and amusing, account of where it came from...... but I had to go to Google Translate to find out what it meant. Turns out its a hybrid of Swedish & German courtesy of some top blokes..... And no one would dare to call a Glider anything like that these days.

i know that the old space shuttle plane was a glider. gliders were used in ww2 to send troops behind military lines . the wright brothers experimented with kites and gliders to study aircraft in flight and answer questions and get answers . so , how do these airplanes differ from sailplanes that are designed to gain lift from thermals or soaring on ridgewinds. thanks in advance .

Basically it is just their lift to drag ratio - which turns into the glide ratio. A glide ratio of a modern is typically between 40 and 60 (even better). For space shuttle at approach speed it was 4.5. Waco CG-4 a WWII military glider had a glide ratio of about 13.

They don't differ that much. The more modern ones are more efficient thanks to better understanding of aerodynamics. These old ones can be soared in the right circumstances
