At first, I thought I forgot how fast-paced Quake was, but then I realized I was watching the video at 1.5x speed.

4:19 I do see Calinou, one of significant contributors to Minetest and Godot engine. Even nickname color scheme is the same as his online avatar. It feels weird to see the same people in very unrelated places. 8:28 and he is pretty skilled.

Is it something like FreeDoom? Mod for open source engine that change dev's licensed asset to new open source?

The sounds are so bad compared to the "real" ones though. I would have thought that with all the modern tools available and the size of Q1's fanbase they'd be able to one-up the originals.

@@nephatrine trent reznor set a pretty high bar with the originals, but i think some of these will be replaced as the package gets more refined

this is pretty cool. i wonder... should i move my game project from gzdoom to quake? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The real question is why would you pick FreeQuake/FreeDoom over its original Counterparts? and if you are broke, its extremely easy to find its Original Counterparts on the high seas, on sites such as Doom4ever or internet archive. so what would be the Appeal of FreeDoom/FreeQuake? its original counterparts and its engines (and its sourceports) are free to make and sell games using carmacks engines from idtech 1/2/3/4 as long as you dont use its original Textures/Weapons/Art/Sounds/Music. the only exception ive found very interesting was OpenArena, mainly liked its y2k 2000s Japanese/Minimalist/Cyber Aesthetic and only that.
@PhilipChute2 ай бұрын
@@GloomGenetics yes the full game is easy to find now, but some people want to exclusively use free software on principle, and this also allows for quake to be included with free software distributions, linux operating systems etc. also things may change in the future but quake can always be free

@@PhilipChute when it comes to Linux and its Distros it makes Sense, Linux tends to not play nice with alot of programs even running on wine (FL Studio for example), though ive been told most old Games from the 90s and circa 2000s runs well on Linux with the few odd bugs and quirks like buggy Mouse sens. personally id like to jump from Windows to Linux, ive been thinking of either Debian or Mint as my first Distro, havent jumped yet due to the lack of familiarity and a few programs not running so well, lets hope valve/gabe will help linux be elevated to the same field as windows when it comes to gaming at least, cause im very much tired of Windows/Microsoft breaching and invading my digital privacy with its intrusive telemetry and now AI on Windows 11 (im using win7 for gaming and win10 for general porpuse stuff) what distro would you recommend for a new comer? personally id do Arch but ive been advised not to.
@PhilipChute2 ай бұрын
@@GloomGenetics arch is cool but not really for people new for linux. ubuntu is made for new people (but has had some telemetry controversy too), so is mint. they are based on debian. they give a normal desktop experience where you can install steam and a lot of games will play fine

I know that's very specific niche, but LibreQuake is very useful for someone who wants to develop game in Quake engine. It allows to have strong foundation wihtout relying to proprietary resources, because they are fully excluded from package. So when you make the game, you won't have the case when you forgot to remove that one specific game asset. So it basically zeroes all the chances to be sued, unless you violate GPL license (applied to the code).
@chpsilva2 ай бұрын
Free, public domain replacements for the original assets can be freely distributed by mods/total conversions/new games (assuming their license hasn't restrictions for commercial use). You can't do that with Quake original content.
