Nice job handy! Next time just pre drill for drywall screws. Can even predrill plaster and then run screws into backer too to speed up process 👍

I usually drill a pilot hole in the plaster along with construction adhesive, and screw the backer pieces in place, then screw in the drywall patch using a screw driver, not an impact screw gun !

Yeah same, if there's a pocket door id just use 1/2" ply or OSB, and 3/4" screws

Don't be fooled everyone! If you're doing a first class job there are many more things to consider, especially how patient you are and the finesse required doing this work. This is a great skill to have, and to master it, consider practicing at home with different scenarios, methods and materials. Knowing how to handle the knives is key and can only be learned by practice. Anyway, I love doing these repairs! Have fun!

Possible Option for ya... I do drywall repairs all the time around the size your doing here - I do it (pumpkin lid style) I cut the wall edges at a 45 degree angle (with my multi tool now days lol), then cut the patch piece at a 45 inwards angle and pop it in with a little caulk adhesive then (using 5 minute mud) tape/mud etc. works out amazingly every time, over 30 years doing wall patch that way and never a issue down the road. PS Your Repair Does look Great!!

Great job. I probably would have masonry drilled a hole through the first layer, and chamfered the hole, so a countersinking screw could be used which would allow sufficient mechanical hold on the backer boards. Maybe both that technique and the glue together would be a good solution. Removing the bubbles is something I have never see before, so that is really appreciated.

In a situation like that i would probably just use 1x6 and screw to a more stable part of the old wall. A little 20 min you could have that job done b4 your glue dried.
@ST-0311
@ST-0311 Ай бұрын
Yup. 1 x 6 and a little longer. That way you can drive screws 1 1/2 to 2 inches away from that brittle edge. Wouldn't hurt to drill pilot holes with counter sinks either. Good call on the Fibafuse though. I love that stuff, and I'm clueless as to how he got an air bubble under it.

Great job! I would of done afew things dif but i have learned over the yrs in construction,.guys will do jobs dif but the end result is the most important,if it looks great and the customer is happy then thats what counts. I have done something similar on occasion,. but I had longer pieces of wood, screwed through existing drywall to hold the wood in place, and then used that wood to add the drywall patch. Worked oK

I would've just Cali patched it in that scenario (limited clearance behind). Plus you could be done with the patch day 1. Come back the next day to sand and paint. It's a LITTLE big of a patch to Cali patch it, but as long as you properly mud the edges of the patch and use hot mud (it's stronger), it'll hold better than that glue will!

For stuff like that, I use that "RAPID SET ONE PASS" stuff, you can put it on as thick as an inch and it's easier to work with than hot mud. (It only comes in a 20 minute cure time but you can add retardant to slow it down if you need to)

Could you masonry drilled oversize countersunk holes through the plaster to mount the back boards with screws and not break the plaster? Save a little cure time and not risk the substrate peeling off under the glue?

Yup, small patches are a pain timewise. Fine if there are other jobs to do and you're there for a few days. We don't even have 'fast' compound where I live, that would be a boon 🙂 But as a 'stand alone' business I think you'd end up doing a LOT of running about in between jobs...

Couldn't you drill a "larger" hole in the plaster to get down to the drywall layer so that you could sink a screw into the wood strips to hold them better than just glue?

Gluing the backer board in seems like it would take to long for my liking. Considering its location, being behind a door and up high enough where its unlikely to be damaged. I would have California patched it. Admittedly it wouldn't be quite as strong, but could have it all ready for paint in 1 day. With a fan on it could probably even paint it in one day.

HM could u of did a "California" patch instead of wood nailers?
@TheOriginalMrB
@TheOriginalMrB Ай бұрын
That would leave a line to the right side since the door is so close to the patch. He doesn’t have enough room to blend and make it invisible. Remember his comment that he wanted to leave it shallow of the other wall so he can fill and blend.. Plus he’s a perfectionist for his customers. In another spot where he has room to work with it better, it would probably be an option though.

@@wallyky Hey, I’m no expert, just a commercial electrician by trade who likes to dabble in other areas. I mean, I suppose we could argue the structural integrity, as I typically just put in back braces. The few times I’ve had to chew through blades for plaster where a nightmare! I’m sure whomever came in behind me hated me.

Handyman I’ve always wondered if the tape is supposed to overlap the other tape when you turn a 90 degree corner or do you just butt one into the other?
@MrDenjok

I would butt them up . If you overlap them you'll have a really hard time fading it into the original wall cuz you have to use a lot of mud to build up.
