I think I would have driven a few nails into the 2x4 before gluing it to the back of the drywall. Then the stud can be detected from the other side with a stud finder.

I am doing some repairs in my house now (due to remodeling) and man I tell you, since I haven't done dw work in so long, you forget more than you know, and its hard to get that perfect match. and since you did it, you will know all the spots that got repaired, versus anyone else that doesn't know the repair is there.

I have been a landlord for 52 years. Bought my first hour at 22 years of age. Did all my own work repairing wood lath plaster walls. With time , I found that when fixing large holes or small ones, I did not have to use any type of perfa tape or fiberglass tape to cover the seam of the repair. I use the additive used with Portland cement to help stick it to old concrete. It is available at Home Depot and Lowes. It goes by many names , it looks like cream. You paint the edges of the old plaster and add it to the dry hot mud you mix in place of water. I have used this in my own home as well as the rentals. I like it because it can be troweled flat. Unlike where you use prefra tape . Prefra tape causes a slight bump that must be feathered out wide in order to disappear. No where in any of the apartments or in my own home has this ever failed. No seam or edge that meets plaster has ever failed . None has ever opened up. Some repairs are 40+ years old with no prefra tape of any kind. It is more expensive to do it this way, but there are times when it is best.

I’m originally from Ireland but living in California now. My friend at home does small jobs and he would price this for around €500 incl material. In San Francisco I’d be charging $2600-3000 for this with material. I’d probably throw in another $92 for the parking ticket I’d likely get being it’s San Francisco 🤯

Too many people do our kind of work (I'm not a handyman, but I am a service tech for a property management company so I do it all, but I have 10+ years construction experience) and paint around the outlet covers and it looks like shit. Stucco mason here. The materials and labor translate welll from inside to outside (lath & stucco vs gypsum). Two 2x3 (approx) patches like that, front row (front of house- eye level) 1.8-2.2k. The biggest variable for us is tying into existing lath and sometimes that goes sideways. Low end is the easy texture like skip trowel, knockdown or curl and the high end is running the acrylic coats/textures on top.

For better lighting, try setting an led light (LED lights shouldn’t get hot enough to burn floor) flat on the floor shining up the wall but have it as close to the wall as possible. This should reveal the textured surface to us better. Hopefully camera can pick it up. Love these videos! Quick tip, If you go and buy those 50$ husky ground led shop lights, you can see a lot more from what your sanding and make your patches even more invisible. Keep up the great work👍

I wish I would have found this video before I started. My dry wall patch was similar size as one of thos. I used the yellow tape with all the little holes in it. And it was a pain in the ass to cover with out using a shit ton of compound so my first coat ended up being super thick

Ive been doing pro drywall texturing on new construction for a while. did a andful of remodel jobs where we had to go in and do patching. I have since quit and gone solo, doing the handyman thing. The shit youre teaching is valuable to me. Did you really hot mud the whole process? Also the fiberglass tape. Im going to use nothing but from here on out. And the sponge! im never gonna sand a patch again. just scrape it decent and sponge it down. Still like my trowel though. You can keep that 12 inch knife

The camera thinks everything is 18% grey , so you overexpose white object and underexpose dark objects. Its counter intuitive

Just did my plaster bathroom after the contractors screwed it up. They did not know how to use shims. Nice idea to make your own custom studs. I didn't see you put any tape on the seams though?

@@TheHandyman1 Your right!, Just re-watched, looks like the froze / stopped early on my phone, right before you put the tape over your face lol. I didn't recognize you when the video link came up without the beard. But after I read the title I was in to watch you work! Yea my contractors were terrible, I had to tear out the walls and patched areas and redo everything myself, and I have never really done drywall, just patches. It came out way better by shimming out the drywall. I think they tried to do the no sand like you did, only they had no clue what they were doing so it just looked terrible. With all the paint on my walls I find it helped me to lightly sand the trowel marks to blend them in before I sponge but that is also because I have way less experience in getting the mud just how I want it the first time. These days I would think this could cost $3000 or even more depending how long it took you, but that is the price of good work right now when all the contractors are just hiring the cheapest labor from across the boarder and charging the same price.

Next time we're going through all that removal all them little chunks put a three-quarter by two and a half inch strip up and down the stud to pack it out three quarters of an inch then rip your studs to fit I'm already putting my sheetrock up fellow handyman / jack of all trades Albert Handyman services

Don't move to the UK, Plasterboard £15, wood £25, we would then skim the whole wall, about a bag and half of plaster £17, 1 days work £150 , probably £250 total with mark up on material (near enough $250 with current exchange rate) wouldn't get away with charging much more than that.

I love your videos handyman I'm a contractor myself....but plz use a push stick. I know your very experienced. but that shit is no joke. any type of saw is no joke and anything can happen. I grew up running chainsaws and climbing trees for my father chipping brush full size whisper chipper at 6 years old and was very experienced by 25 yrs old until one day running it one handed ( top handle stihl 020 ) that tip of that chainsaw caught a small stick and climbed right up my fingers and hand and f***** me up bad. even with saw mitts . went right thru it. fingers were hanging off the bone man. I don't want to see your hurt your a good dude. I mean get it tho ... but that day changed me forever. I regained full use thank God but it was fkn scary.
