Thanks and Merry Christmas! I wish I would have been able to play the first Goonies game. I remember the Nintendo 10 in 1 cabinets but I don't ever recall the Goonies game. At that time I was always focused on the Mario Bros. one up trick.

The Daytona trick, hold up and rotate the stick to steer, is so genius yet so simple I feel stupid for not having figured it out 20 years ago. It's a great way to tone down the twitchiness and will likely work on a lot of racing games.

Another great episode, guys! Nice to see such a wide net when considering licensed titles - celebrity endorsements, racing, etc. Daytona has one of the strangest, best soundtracks in gaming. :) "Daytonaaaaaa," "Rolling Staaaaaaaaart," "G-A-M-E-O-V-E-R" - all of it nutty but so damned cool. Loved the great comparison of Daytona games, Joe. I've tried several home versions, but my fave is still the first, fugly Saturn release. Probably 'cause it was freebie when I bought my Saturn system.

Great episode, guys. One odd but fun licensed game is Major League on the Famicom, it's based on the movie of the same name and even has a likeness of Charlie Sheen. Also, Heavey Metal: Geo Matrix on the Dreamcast, it's based on the Heavey Metal comics series, really cool.

Thumbs up for mentioning Goonies 2 (one of my favorite NES games!), as well as name-dropping Tim and Geoff Follin as composers for SNES Super Off-Road. Technically, that game was licensed as well, just not with Ironman. Instead, it was a Toyota license! Everything in the SNES version is branded with the Toyota logo, and the shop music is an arrangement of the "I love what you do for me, Toyota" jingle. Other NES licensed favorites: Willow, and Spy vs. Spy. Willow, in particular, was amazing.

Of course it is. In fact Sega had to get the Daytona rights from Hasbro in order to release the Dreamcast version because Hasbro owned them at the time.

My local mall arcade had Daytona 2 at some point. Probably when it was pretty new, because I hadn't even HEARD about it when I saw the thing! I was blown away! I'm probably mistaken, but in my mind it looked a lot better than your video of it. I played it only a couple of times, and it was gone not long after (although I didn't go to that arcade all that often). I later ended up working there, and was friends with the manager. I told him one day "I remember when you guys had Daytona 2, I thought that was awesome because I had never seen it or heard of it before." And he was like "What? I don't remember that game." It seemed to vanish as quickly as it had appeared. Definitely not the staying power of the first game. I was always sad that the game didn't seem to get the same love as the original.

@@Gatorade69 The footage looks fine, except that it's much more aliased and not nearly as sharp as I seem to remember it being. It was running on Model 3 hardware after all, so it should resemble something as sharp as the Dreamcast version of Daytona. Joe's video is from 2012 so I'm not sure what state the emulator was at that time, but it looks like the resolution is fairly low as well. I just fired it up under Supermodel and it looks every bit as sharp as I remember it.

Movie-to-game adaptations started to get good in the mid 90's as they became more tailored to the source material as opposed to just re-skinning a platform or shooting game. Die Hard Trilogy was great, with three separate games each based on one of the films. Two other really good adaptations were Alien Trilogy and The Warriors, but unfortunately those games gave me motion sickness and I was unable to finish them.

Perhaps. If anything we strive to have more Sega and other coverage as everyone else on the internet already does Nintendo (especially the NES) to death. But we do have to have Nintendo stuff as well. At the same time we need to be realistic and acknowledge that not all Sega games are pure gold. But you probably haven't seen too many of our videos as I give the NES and SNES lots of grief. Dave gives Sega grief. But when something is clearly bad, we'll both admit it.

Some "dial-up only" games could be made to work with the broadband adapter with a bit of fiddling. I was able to play Phantasy Star Online using the BBA despite the US release only having dial-up support. I cannot say whether that was the case for Daytona USA.

Yeah dude I think it must be the videos you've seen :-) these guys love to talk about both Sega and Nintendo. The whole gag is that one of them always roots for Nintendo, the other always roots for Sega. They're always fighting over which version of a multi-platform game is better (overall they USUALLY agree in the end :D) but the guys are always clear and honest in giving their reasons). They do cover plenty of Sega/Genesis games though, don't worry!
