turning the blade around in the closed throat small router makes it an open throat. Very versitile so no need for an open throat version really

So why can you not just reverse the cutter in the closed throats and now you have an open throats in one tool ..This is just a money grab by Lie Nielsen

Tossed between this and the Veritas. I like that the Veritas comes with more than one blade though.

the "open throat" is for chipout. If the router is being used in a situation where you may be running over chips, the open throat is the choice. The chips have someplace to go other than under the router and they can be blown away as you go. If you're already working at a depth, such as tails and pins, either router is fine.

I cut all my tenons by hand and the router plane is how I can ensure that my tenon cheeks are 100% in plane with the board. I can't recommend these planes enough. They're in my top 5 manual hand tools that every woodworker should own.

Should read desired thickness of tenon not the width.

Great review on the line of routers. I have the large open throat router and I need to pick up the small closed throat, one of these days. Your tip on routing two tenons at once is great, it has gotten me thinking about the ability to do four at once so the adjustments are equal on four corners and I'm not making so many adjustments.

You forgot to mention that the cutter can be flipped around 180 degrees to get into corners and things better.

I've been waiting to see someone demonstrated I'd like to compare it to the veritas but it seems like nobody knows that it can do that or nobody cares you can flip it and use it full nose on all lie Nielsen router planes and I just want to see it

How deep a cut can be made, i.e. can the blade be lowered to a depth of say 2.5" in order to clean out the bottom of a large square tenon?

Unfortunately the maximum depth of cut on the large router plane is 1". For trimming a joint that's deeper than that, perhaps either a chisel or a shoulder plane could be used (depending on the size and nature of the joint).
