one of the reasons why fanfiction can't be directly adapted into published books is that fanfiction assumes that you already know the characters and already root for the relationship so it often doesn't need to establish and develop characters and relationships

It doesn't even have go to to that extent. There was this professor who used to call me and my friend, for academic "favours". Things like, helping him manage his notes, preparing samples for his undergrad classes, etc. One day, he slid his fingers across the back of our shoulders, and said some stuff. And that was it, he doesn't teach in our uni anymore.

Honestly as someone in academia, it IS a big deal that he’s a professor, even if she’s not his student. Also, it would be highly unprofessional to sit on each other’s laps or kiss in front of their colleagues at work events. I have two friends/colleagues in my department who are married and they don’t even acknowledge it at work. I have not read this book because it is highly unrealistic. And at STANFORD too. Nah

WHY is it that all the bad unnecessarily weird fanfics are THE ONES THAT GET PUBLISHED FOR MASS CONSUMPTION and to be this disrespectful to ACTUALLY FCKING INCREDIBLE FANFICS by extremely talented and gifted writers that exist...???!?!!! offensive to society, readers, and writers everywhere
@srtatropicalia
@srtatropicalia 2 жыл бұрын
Omg, I connect deeply with this statement. Fanfic is a different media that is dependant on the original media,, but this can be adapted! And there are such amazing fanfic that focus on character arcs and can offer more flashed out characters. But the stories that get published always seem awful :/ Although, I do believe that a lot of fanfics can be truly enjoyed by the readers bc it's free, conveniently there in the internet and pulls into our stabilized connections to characters we love. But, at the same time, a lot of fanfic can also be polished enough to be published! I also think that bad fanfic being published is a result of the general taste of the "masses", that generally likemore cliche romantic tropes (I'm thinking about After and The Love Hypotesis). A lot of fanfic that gets popular relies a lot on sappiness and smut. Mostly smut. And I myself am also guilty of that, as I also have found myself falling in love with some fanfics that i know are not the best on a "technical level", but still catch my eye because of all the cute fluffy mushy couple stuff.

Uh uh. Creating a toxic learning environment is a big no from me, I don’t care how much grant money you get. Also after deciding to dnf I remembered the sex scene excerpts I’d seen and YEP not for me. That boob one is so weird ?!! THIS! This right here. I gave this book a 3 stars on Goodreads ( don't know why) but now that I think about it I should really dock it down to 2. As a person who is in Academics( Not Science department but English Major) at the moment, I found nothing sexy or attractive about the way Carlson treated his wards. One can be honest about things but one can be that without being a complete douchbag. I genuinely felt for all the students who were crying because of Carslen because I know the pressure they must be under. That right there was so off putting that from then on the book started to go downhill for me. I usually don't like romance books only because such things are usually romanticized there.

Don't forget he's been silently watching her for years, after that one meeting with her and her expired lenses. And he went on mentioning moments he's watched her from a distance at the end of the book. And nobody thought it was slightly creepy for a professor to take such an interest in a random student. And after he went down on her and they 'did the deed' without condom, she falls asleep and when she wakes up he goes down there again, with his fingers and it's described how she could hear her own wetness and his sp*rm. And he goes down on her again to 'clean' her.... Yeah and all of the things in this video. 2 stars for me too

PREACH !!!!! I also hated Anh, too. Her forcing them into PDA was mortifying and uncomfortable to read, had to put down the book like 8 times before proceeding to another chapter. I get the "Women in STEM" girlboss trope but it fell flat for me in that area since the characters are so one-dimensional. The romance between Olive and Adam was just ... not it. God the sex scene was hilarious, too. Note: I also like to add the author's cringy way of trying to add a one-liner that went "Hold yourself with the confidence of a white man." or something and girl you're literally a white woman LMAOOO Nothing serious, just funny

I enjoy fanfiction (and uhh may have written some on occasion) but the problem with translating it to published fiction is usually the characters. With fanfiction your audience is already connected to the characters and so it's okay if they're "shallow" because the focus is on the relationships between them. Your primary job as the author is to put them in situations where they can interact. (also, thank you, I felt like I was the only person on the planet who didn't understand the amount of praise this was getting)

I also think that's just poor writing. Regardless of when you are picking up a book characters should have distinct personalities and you should be able get a feel for them. Some fanfiction gets away with shallow depictions of the characters though because of the reason you stated.

In general, experimentalists sculpt their lives around lab time, and the bio department is notorious for super long and irregular hours. The girl who bases her personality on just being a woman in STEM stuff is um...kind of also a real thing. No shade, that type are just very, uh, _enthusiastic._ 😅 You say that they never show the guy being an ass and we're just meant to take it on gratis. Honestly, I think the author is just using shorthand here that only someone in STEM would get -- which is really shitty writing! But tbh, I think if you're in STEM, the fact that this guy is one of _those_ profs is a massive turn-off, so that's probably why the author doesn't go into detail lol. So basically, there's always like...that "one guy" (because it's always a guy 🙄) in seminars who asks questions that are not in good faith on purpose to make the presenter look bad and make himself look clever. This guy will inevitably be widely known to verbally abuse his students and force them to pull horrible hours. I've known "one guy"s who still expect their students to work through holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas if they are not satisfied with a student's progress. Publishing is essential for your career in STEM academia, and "one guy"s often will do some publication fuckery like not letting students publish because they want to sit on results for a more important future paper for themselves. They may even not let their students graduate on time on purpose to squeeze more publications out of them. Generally, these are selfish, petty little men, and the line about "well he treats everyone else like shit, but he's nice to ME!!" is, imo, gross as hell. I do not get how people can say that this book "renewed their faith in STEM." Like, the type of man who is a major reason why a lot of people leave STEM being romanticized like this doesn't strike me as something that would make me feel better about being in this field lmao. Frankly, I thought _Transcendent Kingdom_ fit that bill way better, but...🤷🏻‍♀️

Agree with all of this 100%. Any “one guy” that you stumble upon in STEM that acts like that should be kept at length if you’re able to. I sincerely hope you don’t have to meet them and if you do, don’t let it break your spirit for STEM.

The thing for me is he's not that type of abusive professor in the end. He makes a point of not making it about the students and always about the work and that he expects much and wants them to be great and therefore he makes all of his students re-do the work if he is not satisfied with their work due to his high standards. I think that's built up to the extreme and he gets called out for it by Olive, but it maybe helps see that the author tried to reject asshole-professors while still leaving Adam "antagonistic and unapprochable". It is also made a point that students who finish their degrees with him are always great scientists who go on to very high-paid jobs and with lots of publications and great expectations which they are able to handle. It is also a point made that he's not forcing his students to work 24h/7days a week but that he'll do the extra time if need be (e.g. for an experiment with a tight deadline). Again, don't want to apologise his behaviour, just wanting to expand what is actually in the novel. Is it great and realistic? Well ... probably not. But the characters are kind of well-built, even though not everyone has to like them. Also, I didn't know it originated as fanfic and I didn't get that vibe at all.

I'm only halfway through the video right now, so maybe you mention this, but it's interesting to me how the topic of like big age gaps and the power dynamics/weirdness of that is being brought up a lot these days, but we still have books coming out about teacher/student relationships. Even if the student is a grown ass adult in grad school, that's still a huge power dynamic and really uncomfortable, especially in the same field. That's actually a Title IX nightmare. Like, I was in a grad program, and that shit never happened *in public.* The chair of the department would have shut that down quickly, you gotta sign a bunch of paperwork in order for it to be legit...it's a whole ass mess. And I haven't seen a single person talking about that in the context of this book! Maybe I'm just missing that convo happening somewhere. Anyhoo, loving the rant.

It's acknowledged in the novel that he asks the dean about the situation and it's firmly established that he cannot under any circumstances be involved in her academic education and that he has to excuse himself if she should be involved in any way type or form from reviews or academic awards etc. It's also acknowledged that they are talked about by the department and that it comes with their own positive and negative repercussions. Sure they are not very realistic, but at least it get's acknowledged at all and it's not that whole "We have to keep it a secret"-storyline, which in my opinion is overdone. It was a nice change of scenery to have that not be the big deal of the story and their dynamic. It becomes kind of an issue later on, with its own repercussions, but it was fresh from a readers point of view.

I haven't read this book, but I can totally relate concerning the overemphasis on the morality of food choices. I've read more than one book where the heroine's main character trait seemed to be that she ate "bad" food and never went near a vegetable. It is annoying to read about a character living off of Doritos and Cheerwine and not even accepting a decent meal when someone else is paying for it. As for this particular book, I dodged that bullet because I only read books from KU and my library. I would have been thoroughly upset if I paid money for a book and disliked it so much.

ok I just started the video and I literally screamed YESSS!!! After reading The Love Hypothesis, I was so confused on why people were hyping up the book as much as they did because I just didn't see everything that they were seeing. I can see why people would love it but my biggest disappointment with the book is the child-like dialogue/premise. How am I supposed to believe that the characters are mid 20s and early 30s when the main snarky banter between Olive and Adam is that she likes pumpkin spice latte and he hates sugary drinks.........like what?? The whole book felt like I was reading a YA book when I swear it was marketed as adult romance. Also, they only had like 3 "dates" and all of a sudden they were saying "I love you"......again, they are supposed to be mid 20s and early 30s. I feel like an issue I'm starting to see with these type of books is that they focus a lot on tropes for example 'fake dating' and it feels like they are ticking off a checklist rather than fleshing out the characters and making them characters to actually care about. Another thing was the s£x scene like I couldn't stop cringing from the dialogue. Reading The Love Hypothesis reminded me that the book was a fanfic/ Ali Hazelwood was a fanfic writer which is kinda unfortunate because there are so many diverse and really amazing fanfics that exist but they are never the ones being published.

Hum wow now I really don’t want to read this book… being a woman in STEM, I find completely unbelievable and unrealistic that a professor has his funding blocked by the university board, because he would likely have federal grants, so the university would not want to block it as they would also block the money they would get from it… also, that means he can leave while they block it and go to another university… Sexual assault scene: she should just file a title IX, like Adam mentioned right in the beginning… Also completely agree, she is a PhD in biology, so no protection ?!

I love fan fiction so I really liked this book, I could suspend my disbelief for the fake dating, student/ professor, “mean guy is nice to people he likes” and all that. But I totally agree that I was bothered by Anh. The author always talks about how Olive and Anh are best friends but it isn’t shown at all, there’s one scene at the start of them hanging out and it’s a short one. I was also kind of bothered that Anh basically told the whole school about Olive and Adam? I understand why but with how quickly everything spread you’d think the first thing she did was tell someone. Something about it just put me off and made me doubt how close they really were. The sitting on the lap thing really came out of nowhere for me. I really think the scene could have gone better if they sat next to each other and she thought about sharing the arm rest or holding his hand or something. Something that is a little more mellow but still builds tension then the author could lead to the kiss then the sunscreen scene. I have other problems with the sunscreen scene but it’s kind of camp idk. Things really went from 0 to 100 to 0 then back to 100. I also think the authors could have done more with their interests? Early in the book olive says that she likes to run and later it’s revealed that adam also likes running, there totally could have been some kind of exercise date thing instead of the same coffee/ lab cycle they’re always in. Ik they wanted to keep it on campus but i feel like it would have helped their chemistry. I wasn’t a huge fan of olive but I thought her scenes with adam were the best ones for her character. I liked them getting to know eachother and I didn’t mind the sex scene along with the stuff that happened after it but I definitely think the “he doesn’t like me like that” angle was pushed a little too far. Like I could think she was naïve enough to think that he didn’t like her before but after the sex scene and most of the later fake dating stuff there’s no excuse for her to be that dumb. Despite this, I still really liked the book. I haven’t read anything in forever so it was an easy read for me to start with. It was fun to read and every time I started I couldn’t stop. The book reads like a fanfiction in style and in premise so to anyone who doesn’t like that then they definitely won’t like this book.

Honestly, as a sort of ex reylo ( who also read the first 3 pages of this when it was a reylo fic btw, I clicked out fast because it had the standard writing red flags I will talk about later) who has seen this fandom became a writing self righteous circus, your review just proved what I have always known all along-- the whole self insert mania was what propelled Rey and romance writing popularity in that fandom for so long. I disagree with comments people have here that its the problem with fanfic to original book transition( maybe in terms of writer forgot she was supposed to make us care for Olive and write a legible premise) because I have seen many books do the same and never betray that the fanfic roots ( Sylvain Reynolds, even E L James is not that bad) . The problem has been this fandom in particular had collective bad ideas on what a good book, way to write a female protagonist and love interest in "enemy" or even rival setting was. Now it has been exposed out of their little bubble, for everyone to see . You cannot expect to not give your character any legible challenge, carry over premises and feelings from original movie in ludicrous scenario to make someone like or dislike a character , and then expect to be hailed Rabindranath Tagore for it ( the whole "Oh Adam is so unlikable! oh you kissed unlikable professor?" Oh that is the problem here? not that you kissed a random man without his permission? isn't that straight up assault? just because he is :villain: Kylo in OG work am I supposed to always be against him no matter what context? this is nuts!) They just write bad fanfiction even by fanfic standards and had no interest in listening to anyone say how bad their writing was. The write all this premise ideas and use NONE OF IT ( like "girl in STEM"?? weird shit to sell a book with but OliveRey being in STEM had barely any relevance in the plot , at least I do not remember the fic tagging "women in STEM!" as a selling point. I am reading Chinese mlm webnovels now everything they specifically point out in blurb has so much relevance in the plot, its insane this kind of substandard book is getting book deals while my Chinese writer counterpart have to dodge persecution for this...)

Thank you! You have saved me!!! I really don’t read romance for all the reasons you mentioned. This book has been in my TBR because Mara loved it so much and I was going to try to read a romance again but now this won’t be the one. BTW I am a scientist (physics PhD) and it seems to me that this book could have been so much more. So many of the colleagues I have worked with are on the spectrum or are simply better with coding and numbers than with people, this book could have gone that way. Or, gone after the insanely high stresses of grant competition and how that manages to quash relationships ITRW. Or how the amount of familial, cultural or national pressure can threaten to squash everything else out of the lives of scientists. My point is that there could have been a lot of drivers for a fake dating relationship trope that could have better reflected the real world of those in the scientific community. For this author to have missed that opportunity is unfortunate.

Thank you for this! Honestly, I think it's an insult to Stanford, because why would such a prestigious institution need proof that any professor would want to stay with them, much less to deem that his having a girlfriend in the department would be said proof that he's not a flight risk? That was the biggest turn off for me.

Sounds like characters become cardboard cut outs when you file off the fanfic and remove the characterization of the original characters they were based on. 😒

Hahaha, I literally stopped and said “what the..” when I read the ‘breast in mouth’ scene, then showed my bf and we kept laughing about it. I am a woman from STEM and I actually enjoyed the book (minus the sex scene), even if it was super predictable and shallow. But I love fake dating tropes and fourth wall breaks. And I still thoroughly enjoyed this review. I actually agree with everything you said lol. Also had no idea this was a Reylo fanfic and I hate the Reylo pairing. So that’s interesting.

I had a feeling this wasn't going to be my type of book & didn't even bother looking into it further. This video is so entertaining!! The video title alone got me laughing. Not really knowing anything beyond it being fake dating really made watching this all the more enjoyable. May I add, you look stunning in this

So happy you made this video! I thought something was wrong with me for hating this book, because every one else seemed to absolutely love it. 😂 Everything in this video that was said, needed to be said. Agreed with every word.

JESS!!! :) You hit the absolute nail on the head. I'm literally sitting here right after finishing this book, wondering to myself, "How can anyone make it through this empty, vapid novel?" The side characters were so underdeveloped, and absolute caricatures of the stereotypes they fit! Ahn being pushy and angry, and her entire personality being focused on social justice, just felt like it fell into the "angry woman of color" stereotype! And Malcolm being a queer character who "has a revolving door of conquests" (literally a line taken from the book), is just another stereotype for a character who is not fully fleshed out!! They literally only exist to serve the needs of Olive, who is, herself, so absolutely annoying. THANK YOU for making this video and drawing a point to these cringey characters (She eats Doritos???? GASP), cringey dialogue (comparing a vagina to a pat of butter is where I draw the line dude) and just absolutely bland male romantic interest. You're my hero EDIT: I LITERALLY SCREAMED WITH JOY WHEN YOU MENTIONED THE PART WHERE SHE COMPARED SEX TO BIRTH. THANK. YOU. JESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL??????????????????
