We can find charlatans peddling snake oil in a wide variety of spheres, but there are quite a lot of lies that are told specifically about water. It's such a ubiquitous substance, everywhere around us, and inside of us, and since we need it to survive, it's fertile grounds for pseudoscience. What kinds of lies do people tell about water? There are many colorful examples we will cover, but this first part will focus on the main conspiracy surrounding water, and that is the fluoridation of tap water. From government mind control to neurotoxic effects, there is no shortage of misinformation associated with this incredible achievement of modern society, so let's run through the most common talking points and see what they're all about, shall we?

I was with my niece, and we were getting a pitch from some water salesman guy saying their water was perfectly ph balanced with the right minerals for blah blah i don't really remember, and he gave us a couple bottles as free samples. Just remember that fluoride travels through whole body to get to teeth and bone via blood. It affects you in more than just sunshine and good ways. It is a known neurotoxin and no amount of "debunking" will work because science can't contradict itself like that. We also never voted for fluoride in our water, and largely, we didn't even get a heads up. Is that a trustworthy way of doing things in a democracy?

14:00 The dose makes the poison is one of my favourite lines. As someone who uses cannabis medically, and hates people who think it is a panacea that can do no harm, I like to educate people that you can theoretically overdose on weed, you would just need to smoke about 2000 joints in a minute. At that point, they usually say "see, its harmless" and then I hit them with the following fact. It would take twice as many cigarettes to overdose on nicotine, but if you injected the nicotine from just 1 pack of cigarettes directly into your vein, you would be dead. In addition to dose, the method and duration of delivery is also very important.

To be fair, tap water can be pretty bad depending on where you are. In some places in the US, it's undrinkable due to pollution (Flint, MI is a great example, where it's contaminated with enough heavy metals to make it poisonous). In other places it just tastes bad. So avoiding tap water in some places is valid. But yeah, that doesn't excuse pseudoscience and snake oil.

I value your research. My own anecdotal experience is this: I brushed and flossed daily, always using fluoride toothpaste. My teeth were rotting, with several breaking resulting in two root canals. *_My dentist_* told me to try fluoride-free toothpaste and purified water for a few months and see if it helps my teeth. But, if I didn’t see noticeable benefits, then I should go back to sing fluoride again. My teeth stopped rotting and breaking. Not a single cavity, break, or toothache in several years. I understand what the research says. So did my dentist. My own dental health happened to improve after removing fluoride, but I am likely the exception, not the rule.

This video is wrong or misguided on many points. If you want to hear a legitimate counter argument and math to back it up, then continue reading. There was no mention in this video that the fluoride added to water is not sodium fluoride but hexafluorosilicic acid and sodium silicofluoride which is very toxic and is a byproduct of the phosphorus mining industry. This stuff is very toxic and is not the same as naturally occurring sodium fluoride which is safe in very minute amounts. He also doesn’t mention how sodium fluoride was the main active ingredient in rat poisons for many years. Look it up. Recommend amount of toothpaste = 1 pea sized squirt. 1 pea is approximately 0.25cm cubed. There are 4000 pea sized amounts of toothpaste in a liter. 1500mg/liter fluoride toothpaste divided by 4000 = 0.375mg of fluoride per 1 pea sized amount of toothpaste. The EPA’s max regulatory limit for fluoridated water is 4mg/Liter and the secondary limit is 2mg/L. These limits have known to be exceeded with limited action from regulatory authorities. The EPA allows cities to exceed the 2mg limit for up to 12 consecutive months before taking action. But for science, let’s just go with the HHS recommendation of 0.7mg/L. If someone drinks 2 liters of water a day, that is 1.4 mg of fluoride daily ingestion. Now think about athletes and people who work/live in hot climates that consume a gallon of water (3.78 Liters) a day. That would bring us 2.65 mg of Fluoride a day. This far exceeds the 0.375mg of fluoride in a pea sized squirt of toothpaste. Now what if it is a hot climate and someone’s is drinking a gallon of 2, 3, or 4 mg/L fluoridated water? A fluoride concentration of 2 mg/L in drinking water would result in 7.56mg of daily fluoride consumption. That is 20x more fluoride consumed through water compared to the fluoride in a pea sized scoop of toothpaste! This isn’t even factoring in that the fluoride we receive from municipal energy water supplies is NOT sodium fluoride but the chemicals listed above. I will save writing out the calculations for acute toxicity via drinking water, which can and does happen, but the real problem is long term exposure. These heavy metals bind to the calcium in our bones. What happens to our bones when we get older? The density goes down and large amounts of heavy metals may be released to flow through our blood and land in soft tissue. Alzheimer’s anyone? Our bodies require many nutrients and minerals in very minute amounts that are found naturally occurring in underground water springs. If we are lacking a nutrient, we can simply supplement it into our diet. It is absurd to think the government cares so much about our teeth that they would medicate or supplement the water supplies with it, meanwhile, Americans are greatly lacking in many other nutrients and minerals that the government does not supplement our water with. Instead the government allows all kinds of crap into our food including hydrogenated oils which cause heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in America in the hundreds of thousands. “Cigarettes are good for you too!” they used to say. What makes more sense, the government is very concerned with our teeth, but not how much sugar (tooth decay) companies use in food. Or the government allowed a way for the phosphorous mining industry to rid itself of industrial waste instead of dumping heavy concentrations of it into streams which the EPA outlawed? You tell me what is logical. Many times throughout history, the science community has claimed to have it all figured out until one day a lone Wolf scientist figures out the establishments belief is wrong. This lone Wolf has been mocked at many times. Today is no different. We must question established views on science. It doesn’t mean there is a great conspiracy always but that simply large populations of people scientist have often been wrong. However, those in power should not be blindly trusted. Did you know America is one of the only countries who fluoridate their water? Question, question, and question again.

@Aditya Chavarkar it’s the fact it greatly contributes to heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in America, and yet the government doesn’t show that they care. But on the other hand they care so much about our teeth health to supplement our water supply. There are many substances that simply have no place in food and the public is largely unaware of the health effects of hydrogenated oils. Nobody’s forcing McDonald’s down my throat but most people didn’t ask their cities to add fluoride to their water either.

I appreciate how you don't insult people who believe these things, admit that questioning it is perfectly OK, and admit when there is logic to certain lines of questioning. However, anyone who speaks about the dangers of Fluoride in water you assume they are acting in bad faith... why is that? Why assume malevolence? Isn't it entirely possible that the overwhelming majority of them actually believe what they say they do? Typically, when you ask a question like this, you get two reactions from people. Anyone who doesn't believe simply ridicules the person asking and doesn't have their questions answered. Anyone who does shares the information they have... even if it might be inaccurate, incomplete, or missing the big picture. So from the perspective of someone asking a question, which do you think they would be more likely to believe? This seems obvious, and probably why you take this approach; it is MUCH more effective. Videos like this are the exception and most people will not find them. However, couldn't the same be said about anyone who talks about it publicly and tries to warn others of what they perceive as a danger? The key difference between someone asking the question, and someone who talks about it publicly, is the latter got information from those who already believed... there is not much at all separating them. As for a researcher, unless they can be shown to be purposefully disingenuous, is likely going off of the available information they had and is taking a huge risk to their career to do so. Anyone in this latter category has even more to lose if they later admit they were wrong... so wouldn't this same approach be even more useful? I feel in general, with any of these sorts of topics, we do a disservice when we insult and belittle people... there is nothing wrong with asking any question and trying to learn about any topic, no matter where that takes you. If people would simply be kinder, and help people to find good information, a lot of this could be avoided. We also put far too much emphasis on shaming people when they are wrong... if you are not finding yourself wrong about something you are NOT learning and growing. It's like a competition where no one wins. Look at the state of "debate" we have now... even the most "civil" is a performance with no substance. I believe the best thing we can do to combat this is to stop acting like someone is "owned" when they are proven wrong... EVERYONE is wrong about something! It should be celebrated when someone is found to be proven wrong, and has the courage to admit it. It is the only way to grow, and we stagnate under the weight of our egos. A humble fool will eventually stumble across the truth, while an arrogant intellectual will never take the first step of that journey.

People who fall for the propaganda are not acting in bad faith. The people who create the propaganda are. That's who I attack in my debunks. As for the tone, I stay as cordial as possible, but I don't humor those who are objectively wrong. Other communicators can have a different approach and I support that. But I call them like I see them. Some people don't listen unless you shout at them, or even give them a good slap in the face. That's life.
@naejimba
@naejimba 2 жыл бұрын
@@ProfessorDaveExplains "The people who create the propaganda are." To be fair, that is an assumption. Again, isn't it entirely possible these people believe what they say they do? I was raised religious but am now an Atheist. I'm reminded of religious fundamentalists who try to convert others... I believe they are completely wrong, and have no solid case to make. However, I can also acknowledge that they believe what they say they do, and that (from their perspective) they are trying to help others. For all of their faults it is out of concern for others that they act. Now, if you've ever tried to interact with people like this, note the reaction you get if someone claims that they are acting in bad faith and actively trying to deceive others. You get NOWHERE and they immediately become defensive (they might even claim the person they are talking to is possessed or deceived by the devil; the conspiracy theorist equivalent of being brainwashed or working for some government agency). It is the end of any productive discussion. I've found a much better approach is to first let them know you think they are being genuine, and thank them for their concern for others. As strange as it sounds, first making that human connection with them makes all of the difference. Typically that would be the end of the first conversation, and I just let them know that I'm passionate about the truth and helping others, but that I disagree and am not looking to argue with them... and if they'd like, at some point we can talk about it because I believe these views do cause some very real harm. Then I shake their hand or hug their neck. You would be surprised at how many people are willing to sit down at a later time after processing this. At the very least, they will be willing to hear you out, and are exposed to a new point of view and arguments they otherwise would not be. It's about planting a seed and making it so THEY want to dive deeper on their own, at their own pace. I don't think someone has EVER changed another person's mind... but people change their own minds every day. It is a long and sometimes painful process; no one wants to be wrong and it is difficult and embarrassing to admit. And if someone might say this is ridiculous, look at how almost ALL the Westboro Baptist Church's members have changed their minds (the people with "God hates fags" and "thank god for dead soldiers" signs). Also look into the work of Daryl Davis (a black man who made friends with the KKK and has had 200 people so far change their minds and leave the organization). I really think I'm onto something about how the approach taken to these topics does far more harm than good. And look, I'm not trying to poop on your parade here... it's just food for thought. I enjoy your videos and you are one of the good sources out there that I wish more people would see. You are so far the only person who has bothered to listen and even to respond. You're a rarity; the best of the best. I know I can offer a critique and you won't take it personally. Thanks for everything you do.

In some locations the tap water is seriously unpalatable. I was once one of about 20 people in a focus group, and it turned out the subject was tap water. The upshot was to determine the perceived impact of known trichloroethylene plumes in the ground around the Phoenix metro area. We were asked (among other things) where we got out drinking water. Most bought it 5 gallons at a time from the coin-op dispensers around town; others had water treatment systems at home. I was the only one in the group who drank the iron-rich tap water. My daughter lives in southwest Albuquerque. The tap water has so much manganese in it that a glass of water left overnight has a pink film on the bottom.

I've been following your content for quite a long time now, after finding you through some of your great chemistry-focused videos, and this one was quite important to me because my dad fell into the anti-fluoride pipeline (thankfully he hasn't stopped brushing his teeth though). He showed me those same talking points about byproducts of the aluminum industry, and the "it's to make us docile!". I went to try and find where he got this information, and honestly got a bit brain-fried after so much reading. Apparently the docile thing comes from a study from 1995 by Phyllis Mullenix, that seemed to show hypoactivity in mice after fluoride exposure, and since I'm not familiar enough with the nitty-gritty of scientific papers, it's a bit hard for me to tell whether it's a valid and well-conducted one, despite doing my best to read the whole thing. The aluminum thing is a bit more weird to me, and while I don't expect you to respond, it makes me confused and I'd love to understand everything better, to relay the information to my father and potentially other people! :D Love your content, thank you for taking the time to make so many videos on so many different and important topics!

Such a conspiracy (the microwave cancer one) is just downright stupid. Here's the thing: yes it's true that some types of light are ionizing, but everything below soft UV isn't ionizing at all. Remember the spectral types of light ordered by (decreasing) energy? (the gamma ray - X-ray - UV - visible - IR - radio one) Notice that visible light is located below UV. Microwave is located between IR and radio. By logic, if visible light can't cause cancer, neither do microwave.

Fluoride is attracted to calcium. As we age, the pineal gland picks up calcium, and therefore, like bone, it picks up fluoride. Totally unrelated as is the pineal gland argument.

It can affect the melatonin production in a negative way and in the Hydroxyapatit cristals adult people have a very high concentration of fluoride... About 21000 parts per million... I'm no scientist but basically fluoride affects your hormone system and production... It's not necessary for your body... It effects the cognitive function of children in a negative and desastrous way (Choi et AL. 2012) (Choi and Grandjean 2013)... Melatonin production is important to prevent several types of cancer and pineal gland calcification affect it in a bad way... When I was in college my physiology professor gave us an article from Scientific American that suggested that fluoridation could have some negative effects after long term exposure. I think that it was called "Second Thoughts About Fluoride." For this reason, I have felt a bit unsure about fluoride. Not losing sleep over it, I still use fluoride toothpaste and even fluoride mouth rinse once in awhile, but I couldn't help but wonder if there could be some slight long term effects. Like, what if fluoride water makes people feel less energetic or have low thyroid hormone, but its a small enough effect to not be very noticeable in a study. Years later, I suppose that that article in Scientific American might have been too sensational though. These are just my musings, I'm actually very pro-science. Fluorosis can only occur during the development of the dentition. If you’re teeth have come in it’s irrelevant. As for the dose, off the top of my head I can’t remember but I know that it’s variable. Some children need more some need less. The 0.7ppm in water for instance was chosen because it hit the sweet spot of maximally reducing caries (decay) whilst minimally causing fluorosis. * found the graph I liked, it’s has the x axis of fluoride concentration and 2 y axis, 1 of DMFT(decay,missing,filled teeth) the other of the index of dental fluorosis. It seems that for some individuals fluorosis occurs at any conc, but this steadily increases with increased conc. hence why they keep water fluoridation to below 1mg/L. Great video, but you missed the biggest argument against fluoride which is its effects on the pineal gland (calcification). Hope you cover it in Pt 2. Thanks.

From what I can tell, this is only if there it far too much fluoride, about 5 ppm. Normal levels (1 ppm) are OK

It's a non-starter. Calcification = calcium. Fluoride =/= calcium. It's completely idiotic.

It’s so adorable how you think that what you just said has anything to do with the basic definitions of words I was just elucidating. Keep wishing on that star, kiddo. One day you’ll be a real boy!

Max, whining about “cherry picking” is something stupid people do when they can’t refute airtight arguments. Address what’s in the video concretely or keep your mouth shut, little boy.

I used to believe that fluoridating water was bad for you, over time, I questioned the sources. I am very happy you made the video. Though, now I wonder, since I am drinking filtered water(Zero water.) partially because of pollution and taste, am I getting enough fluoride?
