Man, this is TRUTH. Every time I'm not getting the results I want, I step back and look at my recent habits, and I notice where I'm going wrong. The problem is usually NOT what I think it is. It's just that I've fallen into a pattern that is not serving me. A few tweaks/hacks/adjustments and I'm onto a better workflow/game-plan. And then I start getting shit done again. Took me a long time to realize this, but I'm mindful of it now. And it works.

I have been sitting in this room now for 3 years. trust me having time is not the solution. It helps with the Learning but that never ends as you all know. No artist is constantly creative it peaks now and then. Just be at the desk when you do. ;) lol

I think one of the hardest things to do is first, admit that you may be lying to yourself. Once that happens and you're able to face cold hard facts about your situation, you open yourself up to progression. In many cases we are all our own worst enemy without knowing. It takes some real character even acknowledge that. Appreciate the information as always J! I'm personally putting it to use in my own life.

You said it Jeff, it takes a whole lot of character and will power to acknowledge poor habits and change them. The fact that you responded shows me that you are a person that values accountability, so make sure you check back in with me from time to time and let me know how things are coming along. If you need help or advice dont hesitate to reach out.

solid info. I'm definitely struggling with consistency in getting songs to a workable place. I come up with a bunch of 4 bar loops and leave them there. Then I have a huge folder of these ideas that feel too overwhelming to finish so I end up with a bunch of unfinished ideas.

Thamn bro!!! That's me right there... I'm switching to Performance DJ... less time consuming, its like creating and mixing in the spot

Figure out whether you're making music with a purpose or just practicing. A lot of producers get discouraged with this "loop making" habit but its because of their mentality towards their efforts. If the habit you have is solely about practice, then make a more conscious decision to practice a specific component of production, mixing or sound design. The resulting loop or sounds should be put into a "practice/ideas" folder to document your progress in that area that you're trying to develop as a producer. If you're producing with the purpose of releasing music, then you need to develop your vision more clearly. I discuss how to develop your vision for a project in my Sound Mind Sessions video course so make sure you sign up for that free course and put in to practice the methods I discussed in that lesson.

My problem wasn't with loops... it was wit projects... I would have ideas and not finish them...
@larryiscreating7 жыл бұрын
I've been in a similar place with vsts too. One thing I did a few weeks ago over the course of a weekend was do complete reset on my computer and only reinstall the sample packs, programs and vsts I was really using at that point. It did help me because I wasn't overwhelmed looking at all these options. Another idea might be to uninstall the ones you have used and only leave the ones you haven't used before so that you are forced to try something new.

bruh all the things u just said is all my bad habits especially the part about not finishing the beats I really got that bad! thanks for the motivation!!!!
@Altruwest7 жыл бұрын
Its hard to finish when you don't know what you're finishing for in the first place. Without purpose you'll keep the insanity cycle of beatmaking going perpetually. Set a goal and a purpose for your productions, even if its as simple as releasing the beat on SoundCloud. Setting goals and completing these goals will give you more motivation as you receive feedback and comments on your released product. What I don't recommend is that you hoard your music on your hard drive waiting for some artist or opportunity to present itself to you. Try to get as many small wins as you can with your music so that you stay motivated.

this video is the reason why I made my video with making beats on my phone and why I do and why it's more consistent with doing transactions and putting ideas down if you're doing thing during the day. I always have time even at work to get on my phone and put anything down. I'm really going to change the face of how people percept how people produce music years and years ahead. Look at my newest video, I will be posting suggestions and adivce next video while making beats off my iphone, stay tuned.

Awesome vid, alot of what you said is what seems to be a natural flow for me and now I am at the point of managing the resourcefulness and will power. Finally catching up on all of those tracks that I never finished. Now that I am finishing them of course they are banging even more, shit I worked on years ago is now coming to life because I finally gave in and did what you said focus on what I have and create with a purpose in mind as if I am already signed and working for a label, but the label is me. Awesome Video, Peace.

I totally agree with Altruwest in this video. However… the biggest lie I keep hearing from music producers is... "I dont need to learn to play instruments", "I dont need to learn music theory", "I dont need to play with others, in bands/orchestras".
@Altruwest4 жыл бұрын
I think that all goes back to their relationship with time. Many people want the things that come with being successful as a musician right now and therefore cannot spend their time on things that require patience, practice and dedication.
