Rubinstein spoke of Karol Szymanowski quite often, and pictures of them together appear in his book(s). I don’t recall him ever playing this piece, though. I mainly heard Mazurkas and the Symphonie Concertante. This is important music from an important composer in an important age. I’m so glad you have tackled it. You play it with beauty and deep introspection. Thank you for that. My dissociation with reality occurs at the moment the audience applauds. I hear the tepid tap-tap-tap of a tiny audience in a tiny hall - more reminiscent of my years at North Texas, playing recitals to mostly empty seats. I somehow just expect to hear the roar of a Carnegie Hall when you lift your hands and practically collapse at the keyboard after the grueling final variation. (I surmise… it sounds difficult!) My impressions of your range and depth just get stronger with each piece I hear you play. The world needs to hear you, Avery. Once again you havce reached into history and pulled out impressions of a time when we didn’t exist, finding what made them laugh and cry. It ties us all together in this mystery called life. Once more, thank you.
